Post your 3 favorite underrated movies of all time.

We have a fairly eclectic mix of movie fans here, so I figured this would be interesting.

For me, its a tough one, but it probably:

Carlito's Way - A really great crime drama.

Million Dollar Hotel - The best romance movie ever made (I don't like romances, but even I enjoyed this one). Its about a retard (who narrates) who's in love with a crazy whore. meanwhile, A cop is trying to solve the murder of the retards best friend. It stars Jimmy Smits, Mel Gibson and Milla Jovovich.


Dark City - If they made the matrix into a psychological scifi movie, it would be something like this.

Mallrats- The reason I got hooked on Kevin Smith.

Newsies- Just a great movie; loved it as a kid, love it now.

Empire of the Sun- How come no one mentions this as one of Spielberg's greats? Is this a Christian Bale trend? :sweat:

Silverado - Best. Western. Ever.

Jacob's Ladder - My all-time favorite film. Adrian Lyne did an amazing job, as did Tim Robbins. Still scary, even today, and it has the best depiction of Hell ever put on screen.

The Fifth Element - Yeah, it's goofy, but that's the point: it always makes me feel good. One reason I love Luc Besson (besides being a top-notch director) - he doesn't take himself too seriously.

Well, here is few of mine. Not in any order though:

1. Even Horizon - Still one of few films that freaked me out. It didnt fared very well in theaters, and was slamed by critics, but fans recognize this underrated horror film. Great atmospher, very good performances by Sam Neil and Laurence Fishburn, excellent make up and visual fx. And what really disturbed me, things people would do to each other.

2. Dead Heat - I've been meaning to start a thread about this classic Zombie Cop action/horror film. I though it did a pretty cool job combining cop action film, with horror elements, and I liked Treat Williams as the hero. Some nice action scenes, and make up as well. Special Ed dvd will be coming out soon, so I will definately pick it up.

3. Prince of Darkness - Another very underrated horror film. Personally one of my favorite horror movies, and one of the best films of John Carpenter. Unlike overrated Halloween, POD has great atmophere and music. Sure the idea is little silly, but it doesnt really detract from the film enjoyment. I need to get the dvd of it, but its been OOP for a long time, and Ebay prices are way too high :(

Man I totally forgot about Army of Darkness. A classic.

For me?

Event Horizon- I have to agree with Despair, this movie is amazing. Kind of reminiscent of Hellraiser in some ways, but unique in it's own way. And you've gotta love it when Laurance Fishburne says, "FUCK this ship!". :)

Blade- It was a hit, yes, but it's still somewhat underrated. Awesome fight scenes, a cool gothic atmosphere, and a great soundtrack and characters all add up to a movie that WILL kick your ass.

The Thing- one of the few movies to ever freak me out. John Carpenter's remake starring Kurt Russell of the 50's sci-fi classic is not only more faithful to the original book that it was based on, but one of the most messed-up movies ever made. The way they play up the sense of paranoia is masterful, and it's refreshing to see a director throw away the rule that you have to hide the monster until the end of the movie. The Thing shows up early, and you get a good look at it each time. And the designs keep getting more and more wacked out each time you see it...

Honorable Mentions: The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Dolemite 2: The Human Tornado, Desperado, The Crow, Blade 2, The Fifth Element, Hamlet (with Mel Gibson), Escape from New York, The Last of the Mohicans, American Psycho, Death Race 2000, The Professional, Ghost World, The Reanimator, Theater of Blood, and as far as TV goes, Oz.

Despair- Prince of Darkenss is a great movie. Very creepy. As for the DVD, however, it's not really all that great. The video quality is kinda bad, and there's no extras at all, not even a trailer.

I love Wim Wenders and all, but Million Dollar Hotel was shite. Compare that to Until The End of the World, and UTTEOTW smokes it.

Howard's End - This movie seems like a standard chick flick, but in reality, its a bold, beautiful film with amazing performances (Anthony Hopkinds, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, et. al.), some of the most gorgeous cinematography and set design I have ever seen, and a powerful, moving, grand, and epic storyline. This is one of the best films ever made, bar none.

Ran - I dont think people give Akira Kurosawa's last major film the type of recognition it deserves. Sure, they know it's good, but this is more than good - this may be the best film ever released, in any language, since the beginning of film. And if its not the best, it's in the top three. Its simply wondrous in every way. Kurosawa is the greatest director to ever live, and its amazing he made this movie when he was in his 70s, while he was going blind.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - this movie suffered the unfortunate fate that befalls a lot of "fads" in America - a lot of hype followed by burnout. I dont know what was with the burnout, this was, and still is, a beautiful movie. Amazing cinematography. Some of the best fight scenes ever seen on film. A damn fine story. I love it.

Diffx, CTHD was nominated for like, 8 academy awards. I don't think that counts as underrated, not to me anyways. I agree that Ran is a great movie. The new dvd that was only available with the box set at Amazon will be getting a single release in April, so I'll be getting it then. Did you know that every scene in the movie was done in one take?

The Wings of Honneamise- This movie doesn't get its just due even in the anime community.
Dead Man- Johnny Depp stars in a Jim Jarmusch movie with a Neal Young soundtrack. What's not to like?
Unbreakable- My favorite Shaymalan movie, and my favorite comic book movie.

I know CTHD was nominated for those awards; in fact, so was Howard's End. However people don't give it, or Howard's End, the credit I think it deserves. Considering that the Academy Awards have about as much credibility as the diffusionx awards, I dont think it matters how much the film was nominated. :)

As for Ran, no, I didnt know that actually.

I agree with Dolemite. The Thing is one of my favorites and shows just how good of an actor Kurt Russel really is. His character set the tone for the movie, much like a Mutiny on The Bounty, set in modern times.


TRON: This movie was revolutionary for it's time and the special effects are still amazing. This is one of the few videogame movies, that I can call great.


Heavy Metal (Not Heavy Metal 2000!) : A truely pioneering movie for the anime industry, at least in the U.S. This movie did'nt take itself seriously, but the way they used sex, drugs and Rock N' Roll to portray the story made it a classic animated film, in my books.

This is one of the few videogame movies, that I can call great.

What about Cloak and Daggar!!!!!

Like the Atari 5200 featured in the film, it is more often forgotten, than remembered.

Theres been some great movies mentioned in this thread. I feel like running to the local video store and going rental crazy!

The Thing is a great movie. It really shows how cinema should be done.

mvs: I've never seen Until The End Of The World, so I can't compare it with MDH. However, you can't call MDH shite. Even if the director/writer/whatever did better films, this movie does stand out above the majority of movies.

Kevin smith movies are great, but everybody loves them. Still , Mallrats is probably my favorite comedy ever.


Somehow, I still haven't seen Event Horizon, which brings to mind another movie thats supposedly good that I haven't seen. Cube. What did you's think of it?

I bought the DVD, and it's poo. Tell you what though, I shall sit down and watch it again, and hold off on locking that poo comment until such time.

I am a WW fan, but, even watching The End of Voilence a couple days back, I'm thinking he's very Hit or Miss.

I thought Cube was a great film, Very tense, and the idea of people being traped in the cube like maze with traps everywhere, and how the tension rises among the group was interesting. My wife who usually not a big fan of horror films, was glued to the screen. The sequel should be coming out any month now.

Hmm...interesting. I've been hearing a lot about Cube lately. I might have to give it a rent this weekend...

Big Trouble in Little China: One of my favorite movies of all time. Great action sequences, lots of classic dialogue, and Kim Cattral.

The Fifth Element: Non-stop thrill ride, beautiful sets and special effects, and Tricky!

Five Easy Pieces: Most people remember this movie only for Jack Nicholson's diner scene. But it's so much more than that. It's a very profound movie, one that I get more out of every time I watch it. Quite possibly my favorite movie ever.

I've always wanted to watch this (and I forgot to buy it when Fry's had the DVD for 7.99). Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman are probably two of my favorite actors.

Though I did'nt put it in my top 3, I would highly suggest Donny Darko. This movie has a very interesting twist. The main character sees what his future will become and has an option to change it. It's a really interesting film, with a sort of Pulp Fiction like storyline.

Donnie darko is fucking awesome (probably my current fav.), but its held highly by many people, and I seldom hear someone didn't enjoy it.

Good call on Big Trouble In Little China. I love that movie.

I went to the videoshop today, and fucking hell, not one of the movies I wanted to rent were in. Its probably the first time I've ever left a video store with nothing.

I just watched Donnie Darko.

MallRats-Fuck the haters(which are just whiny critics; loads of people love this movie); it was just as funny as Clerks, with a storyline and a faster pace. Not to mention the Stan Lee scene; talking about girls and super hero sex organs with the creator of X-Men?

Big Trouble In Little China-great, great movie. Kick-ass storyline, cool Chinese feel to it, and great humor. Jack & Wang had great chemistry together.

Attack of the Clones-Kick ass SW movie; unlike the drek that was Phantom Menace. I liked the love story, and the SFX were amazing. Yoda never looked so good :cool:

The New Guy-Hey, what can I say? I thought it was damn funny, and a cool storyline. Eddie Griffin was tremendously amusing.

Ive seen Brazil, I thought it was a pretentious, plodding piece. Even the "futuristic world" that so many people spoke so highly about was not that great IMO. Id love to ask a fan of it why they thought it was great. I couldn't stand it past the 110 or 120 minute mark... I ended up watching the whole thing, but I thought it was awful.

As for Fear and Loathing... I thought it was great... when I was doing drugs on a regular basis. Its a horrible, loathsome, disgusting film. The way they treat the girl with the LSD, the bathtub scene, the way that Benicio Del Toro walks around with that huge gut and just yells and how they trash every hotel room they're in... its a truly disgusting movie. It has its moments, though - the various drives in the desert are quite interesting, the scene in the DA's conference is good, but... man, most of that movie is hideous.

The book... the book... is quite good. I recommend you read it.

But please, Id love to know why you think both movies are great. I happen to think Terry Gilliam is an overrated buffoon (based on these 2, as well as 12 Monkeys), but I digress.

I've got the book on my shelf right now, actually. Next to Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail. I'm a huge Hunter S. Thompson fan (Rum Diaries would have been an awesome movie...), mostly because I have a great love for disjointed viewpoints.

Which is a part of why I like Terry Gilliam's work. He does have a tendency to go for sweeping concepts (and miss), but I really like the points of view that his characteres seem to view the world from. He's not one of my top-five directors, but the characterizations that his films take on strike a chord with me.

Like Pulp Fiction, you see the end result, before you know the stroy line leading up to it. Unlike Pulp Fiction though, you don't go backwards in the story. Momento used this backward story technique, just like that of Pulp Fiction.

Memento and Pulp Fiction are not alike.

Memento is 8 minute or so segments, in forward order, told in reverse.

Pulp Fiction has a scene near the end at the beginning, multiple tales, the end in the middle (Bruce Willis riding the bike away would be the end), and then some more.

DD opens with him on his bike in the hills, that's not the ending I saw. The ending I saw a girl on the bike waving at his mother. Did I miss that at the beginning?

The movie was stupid and pointless. It's up there with Jacob's Ladder and Ghost World for most pointless movie.

Run Lola Run makes DD it's bitch.

I don't see the connection between memento, Pulp fiction and DD either, but they do each have a surreal quality, and they all kick ass.

Run Lola Run is great, but its really different to DD. It has a similar theme of time sort of, but they take totally different perspectives on it.

oh, and I think DD is better.

btw mvs, did you watch MDH? (too many abbrieviations!) It is rather slow paced, but still, it shits on the majority of hollywood romance flicks made. The only romance movie that I've seen that comes close to it is Amelie.

Then you missed the point of the movie. Frank told him what was going to happen, and it was up to Donnie, to change the future. He did so by letting the Jet Engine kill him. He could have saved the girlfreind, but he heeded Franks warnings.

As someone who wrote his undergrad thesis on Terry Gilliam, I'll answer that.

Gilliam makes movies differently than just about anyone I've ever seen. He directs with the eye of a cartoonist, changing perspectives on a whim and using montage to distort reality and create humor. His movies have a great spirit of fantasy and wonder to them.

I'll agree that the three films you mentioned are pretentious and boring in parts. 12 Monkeys is based off an obscure French short film, and Brazil has a lot of high-minded social commentary. But Brazil in particular has a lot of really funny scenes, like the man in the chemical suit standing in front of a perfect picket-fence house just as a crane lifts it away revealing a hideous industrial landscape, or the scene where Sam has to share a desk with his neighbor at Information Retrieval.

If you want to see what Gilliam is really capable of, you should see what I think is his best work: Time Bandits. It's a really simple, really clever movie with some brilliant ideas and awesome star cameos. And then if you like TB, try either The Fisher King or the Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Although the former does star Robin Williams, don't hold that against it; it has a lot of the same magic moments that TB has. And Munchausen is a bit on the long side but it's extremely inventive visually.

sleeveboy, thanks for the heads up on him. Yea, he's unique, but is he good. I guess that's where we disagree. But, hey, he did direct Monty Python and the Holy Grail... but thats the sort of movie that can almost direct iself.

Of course, didnt ask why someone thinks Terry Gilliam is great (I only mentioned it because those 2 movies he mentioned are both TG), I asked why someone thought those two films were any good.

Fear and Loathing is disgusting visually, Brazil is overlong, boring, and self-important (yes, it has its moments, but those are few, and the rest is just not up to par), and 12 Monkeys is an impenetrable mess.

Fear and Loating = Snapshot of Hunter Thompson's brain filtered through Ralph Steadman-esque visuals; appealing to me personally, 'cause I just tend to like that sort of thing, every now and then. Ralph's art is traditionally hard to stomach for a lot of people... too much viscera. Which the movie has in spades. Personally, I enjoyed it as an experience... even if it did get very ugly and unplesant at times. I like it on the same level as Clockwork Orange.

Drug free, too. :D

Brazil, on the other hand, is kind of like a fantasy world seen through the eyes of a BBC sci-fi program (and yes, I'm aware Terry is American). Very much a dark fairy tale (of sorts). I really enjoy the attention to detail and the depth the imagery holds throughout the movie. And I do think it gets knocked too much for being over-long. :p

Tetsuo underrated? Come on... It's probably the most critically acclaimed Japanese independent film in existence.

the only one I can think of is FFTSW... but I don't know... I can tell it's really a bad movie but I love it anyway...

Falling Down is a great film. One of the few Shumacher films that isnt a complete shit.

Final Fantasy Spirits Within is also a good pick. Poor movie gets bashed soo much :(

I agree. Sidenote: These are also two excellent Criterion Collection DVDs.

My three? Not really sure if they're underrated, but my other candidates have already been mentioned. Here goes...

L.A. Confidential - maybe the best screenplay I've personally ever read and Russel Crowe's best performance EVAR1! Yes, I'm aware of Romper Stomper, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind and...gasp...Virtuosity! Great lines in this one, too. One of my all-time faves.

Blood Simple - I could really name a couple of Coen Bros. films here (someone already mentioned Miller's Crossing), but it's very stylish for a low-budget noir thriller with twisted Coen Bros. humor and a masterful performance by M. Emmet Walsh.

Mulholland Drive - Yes, I know it can be confusing as all hell and the explanations I've read seem to be those that you have to convince yourself into believing, but the more I watch this film, the more I admire the cinematographic beauty and surreal experience delivered by Lynch. After brushing up on some Jungian psychology, this movie "seems" to make more sense than I originally perceived.

Mulholland Drive truly portrays couch masturbating lesbians everywhere!

Can't think of my top three right now but here are ome of my faves:

Well if speaking of Drive, I would also put on the list Crying Freeman. Excellent Manga adaptation, with Mark Dacasscos, who is excellent as always, Tcheky Kario and Julie Condra(Mark's wife :)). Great action scenes and style, and good story. Directed by Christophe Gans, who later directed Brotherhood of the Wolf, and currently is about to star Adventurer(again with Dacasscos).

Crying Freeman I liked. I've seen practically all of Mark's films but before Drive I saw American Samurai Which I had some pretty decent fight scenes even though it starred that guy from the later American Ninja movies (lame).

Mark D was the Best thing about American Samurai. The movie was crap, except for a couple of good fights, Mark D and some pretty bloody deaths. But last fight between Mark and David Bradley was soo bad, its funny. They never even show them fight, camera only shows each one of them blocking the sword, and you never see the other person :lol:

Mark also has few other underrated films. His Sabotage where he co-stars with Tony Todd, and pre-Matrix Carry Ann Moss is decent action film, and so is his crime drama outing Boogie Boy.

Best Russel Crowe movie is the one where he plays a homo in Austrailia living with his dad.

1. American Psycho - Maybe I'm sick, but I find a lot of this movie really funny. Reading the book now, and its great. Just the self important, materialistic-ness of it all. "Oh my god...it even has a water mark."

2. High Fidelity - Great film. John Cusack in his best role. Jack Black is also tops in this movie. "Is it better to burn out than to fade awayyyyy?"

3. Swingers - Best relationship/break up movie of all time. This movie spoke to me in ways I never thought possible, when I was in a eerily similiar situation. "Your like a big bear, man..."

Hmmm. Interesting. I know a lot of people love Big Lebowski, myself included, but it's could still be considered cult though the Coen brothers are big shots now. One Crazy Summer is great simply for having Jon Cuszack though I prefer Better Off Dead. Howard the Duck I didnt really like aside from Lea Thompson in her underwear.

Well, Alpha team that worked on Drive, still do Power Rangers, and recently had 2 more films released - Shadow Fury(Low budget Sci-fi Action, which is decent, and has some nice fighting), and Extreme Heist(very bad crime movie, with some fighting, but very bad).

Shadow Fury eh? nice fighting is good, any word on getting a VCD/ DVD?

I dont know if it was ever released in US, but I have UK Region 2 dvd of Shadow Fury and its ok. Dont expect anything like Drive though, since this one is pretty low budget.

Not underrated at all, but:

Great flick. Sad as shit, too.

Repo Man: thouroughly punk rock sci-fi comedy and quinessential cult movie. Still makes me laugh. Great soundtrack, too. Underrated by the public in general, though it has its following.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure: Not as braindead as it's made out to be. It's got some pretty clever gags, and it's a damned respectable movie, and still really funny. It's aged well.

I was gonna say Pee Wee's Big Adventure for my third, but I think that movie's actually still fairly popular.

Hellraiser (The scariest movie I've ever seen)

Wes Craven's Dracula 2000 (the main actress is so fucking beautiful)

Event Horizon, Jacob's Ladder are all great choices as well.

While I agree its a fantastic film, if you watch excellent adventure and bogus journey back to back, you really notice how much better bogus journey is.

Dunno if it counts, but Cabin Fever is the best horror movie I've seen in fucking ages.

also, Insomnia is a great movie, though not as out there as Memento.

I think Cabin Fever is overrated. It was ok, but nothing that great.

Both Bill and Ted Adventures were great, but I do prefer Bogus Journey to the first film.

Cabin Fever was pretty wild. I really liked Insomnia too (the one with robin williams).

Cabin Fever sucks. Cabin Boy, on the other hand, is incredibly underrated. Actually, it's not as much underrated as it is universally hated. I love it though.

Awesome film, Sam Peckinpah is a great director. Know for his violence, see The Wild Bunch lots of gut shots with shot guns.

The Mosquito Coast: I am a big fan of movies where the main character goes crazy, and Harrison Ford does that pretty much during his journy to tropical south america where he buys a town, and attempts to create a goverment by introducing Ice to tirbesman, ruining his own family at the same time!

Unbreakable: People seem to really dislike this movie. I really enjoyed this more realistic origin of a vigilante/super hero. It all just works for me, manages to make it fit right in with comic book standards, but all the while does not really enter into crazy fantasy.

Captain Ron: Ok, this is one of the movies that I love for no aparant reason. I think everyone has these. Nothing about the movie is special, or really all that hilarious. But I can watch it over and over. I love the setting and the characters, especially Kurt Russel as Captain Ron Rico. I can't explain the enjoyment I get out of it, but I do.

I just saw Walking Tall and besides the fact it is kinda short, it is actually a good movie. I dunno what all the critics are talking about. I mean I know they bash it because it isn't the same as the original nor the fact its about 85 minutes but c'mon, rate a movie for what it is.
I haven't seen the original and this was a pretty fun movie. Nothing spectacular but a good action movie. Better than most Arnold or Chuck Norris flicks (which usually suck).

I liked it even though it seems critics are bashing it. (For reasons that seem to be kinda stupid.)

Oh yes, I almost forgot 'Wirery Spindel'.

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of my favorite movies but it's not underrated. I'm stuck.

I think I'll stick with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for now. I can't think of any others. Maybe The Hulk, because nobody liked that very much. Snatch was also another amazing movie that isn't underrated, so I can't list it.

Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: All Monsters Attack - Huge in Godzilla circles, but to the mainstream, it's like, "they still make Godzilla movies?". Kickass Godzilla in all his supremely powerful glory.

Starman - I normally hate Jeff Bridges, but I love Karen Allen. Funny, yet touching, this film takes a backseat to similar films E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, yet I find it more endearing and enjoyable than those two. Fun Fact: According to IMDb, the studio making Starman had to choose between that and another alien-visits-Earth story, and chose Starman over it, giving the other movie to a rival studio. That movie was E.T. Talk about kicking yourself...

Day of The Dead - The final film in the "Dead" series seems to get less recognition than "Night of" and "Dawn of", but I found it to be superior to "Dawn" and just a notch below "Night" (I mean c'mon, no one beats that ending). "Day" works with the same themes and ideas as the previous films but the effects are better, the cheese is much reduced and the human drama is as scary as the zombies, which makes for good movie-making.

The Thing (1982) is one of my favorite movies of all time. I wanted to list it, but it's been talked about enough.

Would The Fly (1986) be considered underrated? I really, really love that movie, and compared to Aliens and Predator which came out the same year, The Fly becomes very, very small. Yet, it's better than those two films by far.

Breakin' 2 - Electric Boogaloo

The Postman and Waterworld. I thought they were both cool as shit.
