No More Live for MVC2

Capcom said today that it would release Marvel vs. Capcom 2 this March for the Xbox, but emphasized that the game will not be Xbox Live compatible. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 pits Capcom's popular characters and Marvel's super powered heroes against each other in a variety of fight modes including new innovative matches like three-on-three tag team. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is rated "T" for teen Visit Capcom for further information on the latest installment of this popular console fight game series.

Someone better bring in a defibrillator, stat!

The #Capcom kids are going ape shit over this. Finally, the biggest mistake that the US fighting community ever made has been stopped.

So about that CVS2 =D

Was it announced as Live-compatible?

This pretty much sucks - MvC2 was one of the few games that may have sold me on Live. Why even bother releasing the game without it?

Not without Live it won't. With Live you had damn near every American MvC2 fan willing to buy the game again (and some who bought an XBox solely for MvC2 Live, according to those who claim as such on SRK), and now... well, who's left? You have an older fighting game available to a whole new audience that doesn't really care with (probably) nothing added. Whee.

Live's the only reason anyone who hasn't bought CvS2 by now (or has) would buy it. So now MvC2 without makes little sense.

The game would probably be a laggy travesty anyway on live.
It would have been sweet to have the option to play it online anyway. I guess I'll stick to the DC version

I bet Capcom is doing this to compare with sales of CvS2, especially considering MvC2 is much more popular than CvS2. This should make it boldly clear that XBL will sell their games, and hopefully it'll make them bring more to it (and considering they've done it to MvC2, instead of SF3:TS for example, I'm perfectly fine with that! ;)).

I'd agree with you if my recent CvS2 matches hadn't been perfectly lag-free. Granted, I play in off-peak hours, but it's literally been like someone right next me.

But I didn't like CvS2 very much but ended up buying it a second time solely for Live support, and I'll bet there are others who did the same. It would've happened for MvC2 as well (maybe not me, though, because I've had my fill of MvC2 and don't really want to ever play it again), but no chance of that now.

What a bunch of shit. This is why I grow more and more resentful towards game companies.

I was looking forward to the Xbox Live support, and was going to purchase the Xbox version. Oh well, I'll just play the import DC version instead. ;p

Well I keep my Dreamcast version with my nice ASCII pads, if it's not live, it's not mine ;)

WOW! HOW FUCKING STUPID IS CAPCOM!? Like anyone really wants a two year old game for $50 with no added features. I think I'll play my DC game I've had forever now. This game would have sold EASILY double what they are going to sell now without Live support.

You know what the really ironic thing is? The PS2 version was online in Japan and the DC version might have been as well. Meaning the console with the most focus on online games is the only one which doesn't get online option.

This is a sales mistake of Sega proportions. I hope they don't bother pressing too many copies because these are just going to sit on the shelves.

No! Gamers want to pay $50 for a two year-old game that can be had for $20 on ebay! Just like gamers paid $45 for piss ass ports of RE 2&3 on GC which were selling for DC on Capcom's own website for $10 sealed!

I was rather miffed when I had heard that Capcom removed the online play from the US release of the PlayStation 2 version. That was one of the online games I was looking forward to the most (only exceeded by the Tony Hawk games). The online play was implemented, and then they went and took it out altogether--how messed up is that? I would have bought the PS2 version on the very day of release in the US if it had retained the online play. Instead, I took a "wait and see" attitude, and figured I'd pick it up down the road when I was done playing through all of the hot games I bought during October and November.

A few weeks ago, I encountered a used copy of the Dreamcast version in excellent condition. I bought it. :)

I still want to try the PS2 version, just to see how it compares. The standard DC joypads really aren't well suited for fighting games; I'd be much happier playing it with the PS2 Dual Shock 2 controller. But, I'd prefer most of all to play with a high-quality arcade-style joystick. :D

Oh well, at least i get to save $50.

it's sad looking at them the way they continue to pull stunts as low as this. I swear they have both the wrong people in charge and the wrong people doing the server programming.

Even through we won't get to play this, we still get to play their other games. ;)

What get's me is how Capcom was all over Sega.net with the DC, and yet they're affraid of Live?

They're probably using CvS2 for statistics, and with all the feedback they're getting from "pullers" and such they probably just decided against it being live. That makes the most sense to me. After all, if you think the plug pulling is bad in CvS2, you'd hate to see what it would be like in MvC2.

Bah, fuck Capcom. Knowing them, it'll likely be so bug ridden and poorly localised that it'll cripple the gameplay experience.

In like 100 matches i've had 1 puller, thats not to bad. that would be a hella lame excuse.

Uhh, they could just alter how it keeps tracks of wins / losses instead, penalizing pullers/droppers, but no, that would have them doing actual work. Can't have that.

This game was the only reason I was even considering the purchase of a Xbox Live kit. Oh well, at least I'll be saving some money.

I'm still pissed Capcom removed the online play in the USA Powerstone 2, that would have been awesome :(

Not everyone uses MSP!!!! But seriously, people act as if it's easy to win with MSP--we'll it isn't, unless you invest some serious time into that team and learn how to use it effectively. Rushdown anything will get stomped by a good anti air unless you know what you're doing.

Also, the reason people pick MSP is because it is so fun...I mean Mags and Storm have so many tactics and combos, if you can imagine it, you can do it with these characters...

People continually say this game is all about button mashing--button mashers do not win against good players! It never happens. On higher levels of playing you don't just mash buttons to do air combos, you finish all air combos with a super, there's issues of poisitioning, countering, push blocking, trapping, etc...the game is very technical if you want to treat it that way...

Just because you pick cable doesn't mean you automatically connect 3-4 air hyper viper beams in a row...it takes a lot of practice to learn to play competitively...and if you want to run low tier you can, you just have to work your ass off to be able to handle the tops...

And I love low tier and play it as much as possible--Jill and T. Bonne and Son Son, etc...they are all very different and fun and you can use different tactics if you choose...it's all about how you want to play the game...

Sure the game is unbalanced, everyone knows that, but who cares, it's fun...if you want balanced go play Street Fighter or CvS2...this game is all about insane combo frenzies...

The PS2 version is far inferior to the DC one...don't touch it...the sound effects are muffled, the graphics aren't as good, and I've read on Shoryuken.com that they took some moves out, like infinites, etc...I need to test this sometime, maybe this weekend to see if that is true...but still if you have the DC version, there's no need for any other...it is what we use in tournaments and it's arcade perfect...

I've had MVC2 on Xbox for months (bought it for £10 only at least). It's a decent port but the sound effects aren't load enough. Fairly useless for anything other than collection purposes really.

I was so mad today about Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 today not going on Xbox live that I actually went out and wrote them an e-mail. I truly didn't expect to get a response, but they responded to me in only a few hours. Read the reply below:

It was our intention for a long time to have Marvel VS Capcom 2 X-Box LIVE compatible. The game was being developed to work with LIVE. Unfortunately, due to some recent legal issues beyond Capcom's control, the LIVE capabilities of the game had to be taken out. That's is all that we can say about it.

We apologize and understand if this disappoints the many gamers that have been waiting for an online version of Marvel VS Capcom 2, but faced with the dilemma of releasing the game without LIVE support or not releasing it at all, Capcom decided to release it without LIVE support.

We will be sure to let you and all our avid fans out there know of any new developments as they arise. You should also continue to monitor our web site for the latest information regarding Promotions, New Game Releases, and Industry News.

Sure it's a piss-off-the-consumer mistake, but it's definately not a business mistake. Shipping in March means they will make the fiscal year, and that's a big deal to a company. Almost as big as shipping in time for Christmas.

It's a 'not sell nearly as many copies as they were going to' mistake. Even the copies they sell, I bet they'll get a lot of returns from people who hadn't heard that live was pulled from the game. Seriously, they shouldn't bother pressing more than 10,000 copies.

Yep, scratch this game from my list. Then again, I was only going to buy it to support the XBL 2-D cause.

I think maybe writing Microsoft and/or lobbying them for Live support ( an add-on disc or download can always be released adding the neccesary code at a later date ) is the best bet. Maybe their money can overcome these "legal" issues. This game isn't possibly going to be announced with online play on another console now, is it?

I think it's bull for two reasons:

1) This game was already released online in Japan for both DC and recently PS2.

2) The game was too near release for them to not have at least beta tested the live side of things, but has anyone heard any such beta testing happening? Now you know why.

This is PR bull. If it was true, they would have at least named the company in question, but by making it vague they avoid slander. I'm betting Capcom was just plain lazy.

I notice a couple bringing up the online DC point, but wasn't that direct connect, and therefore not really like Live? They're two different kinds of connections.

I have no idea about the online PS2 system.

All the Capcom online DC games in Japan were through Capcom's own special online service, which in a way makes it more like xbox live than other DC online games. No voice chat though, but its a modem connection anyway.

Don't know how the PS2 version works.

I'd like to see if someone will make a program that allows for your pc to work as a server to use a dreamcast for playing others online the same way halo was given multi-player over gamespy. I'll bet that'll never happen but considering emulation these days, you never know. :p
