Building a computer...and Suggestions?

Alright, this ain't console, but still..
I'm building my own computer, and i need some suggestions for parts..
So far, all i have picked out for sure is my processor (AMD Atholon XP 2100) and 256 RAM..
i want to try and keep this under $1000 cdn.( So thats like 22.50$ american eh?.)

so could you guys recommend some high power, low priced video cards, Motherboards, sound cards??:D

I had someone configure this a few weeks ago. It doesn't have a video card, monitor, keyboard, or mouse though. A 64MB GeForce III can be had pretty cheap, though.

The best value priced video card is probably some kind of ATI Radeon 8500 (or 9100 as they are now known). Price wise they start at about $70 or so (US).

Anyhoo. With that processor (the same as mine) I whole hardily recommend getting an Asus N7N8X motherboard. Fast as fuck, can hold up to 3 gigs of memory, supports up to a 2800+ XP cpu and has Nvidias Nforce 2 controller. Also has on board ethernet and sound so you don't have to get a nic card or sound card (both work great). I got mine for like 112 USD.

I just checked crucial.com, and 512MB of DDR 2700 RAM is 81 US dollars. 81! That is dirt cheap! I got that much for 120 about 2 months ago. You really want to have at least 512MB now.

Graphics card...get the best Geforce your wallet can support. I have a Geforce4 TI 4200 w/ 8XAGP and it flys. Got that for like 150. Also ATI's Radeon line has gotten much better top of the line being the 9700 Pro (IIRC). Can't go wrong with either one.

Take a look at that mobo...awesome all around, plus it will save you from buy a nic and a sound card.

Athlon XP processors are insanley cheap now

If you get a motherboard that supports dual channel ram, like the one above

get two sticks of DDR memory ; other wise you will only need 1

As for videocards, the Radeon 9700 PRO is fantastic; well worth the money IMO. But its not a huge leap above the GeForce4

Really, if you're going to over pay for anything; you might as well make it the videocard. Its the most important part of your PC as far as games go these days.

Everything listed so far only comes out to about 500 bucks. Plenty of room for a case (I wouldn't buy one online, shipping prices are too high); a good fan ; sound card , if you need it; and abig ass monitor

Yeah, if your a PC gamer go for the 512. It's basicly standard now. At the very least it will keep you from upgrading for awhile.

You should be able to pick out a case for cheap at a show...I kinda splurged for mine ($150 Coolermaster). Try to go all aluminum, it acts like a big heat sink. Getting a new computer is the shit. Especially when it's a big jump in speed, it's like a whole new world.

Yeah, I recently finished mine. That mobo you were refering to earlier Rumpy was actually the A7V8X, and it is an AWSOME motherboard. I got the deluxe version (adds firewire, surround sound, dual LAN, and I think something else) Also I would get 2 sticks of 256 333mhz RAM which will activate DUAL ddr and run synchronized with your processor (if you get the newer 333mhz FSB Athlons

so it that DDR 333 RAM??
or shouldi get the DDR400, i heard i should get the 400,
and yeah i will get 1 stick of 256 for now, later i will invest in another one for good measure. hahahaha
so thats the A7n8x motherboard?? how much is that conna cost me?
