Psh, I only have a mattress that I sleep, sit, and eat on. Couches, toilets, and washing machines are for girls. You could put a nice Taito Egret in your bathroom and just poop in a Folgers can!

BTW Upscanning does degrade quality, not only because lines are doubled and fields might not be combined well together, but because in order to do it you must code each analog color channel(R,G,B) into Digital RGB(thus losing quality by digitizing) then write the RAM line buffer with it repeating every line and then converting back to an analog signal for display. The more bits a converter digitizes to the better. 8~10 bit per color channel will incur a minimum penalty in quality because more shades of color are represented. If it is 5 bit per channel then it will pretty much suck and lose a lot of color on output. To see what I mean, convert a 24bit full color picture to 16bit in Photoshop. It's not fun with just 32 shades of each color.

Just get a TV that doesn't have a line doubler, or disable it somehow.

That's not true. I make more complicated stuff than that all the time, and the prices I charge are very reasonable (if I say so myself). If you want a custom RGB setup, send me a PM! Chances are, I can do it. What you've just described (cables for various consoles to an AA converter) wouldn't be very expensive.

Actually, I made a Gen2 to VGA cable just yesterday :) (picked up a cheap multiscan monitor at the local thrift store).

It doesn't flicker if you're using an arcade board or any system older than the DC. For those consoles it should really be called 240p instead of 480i.

You'll get the same interlace flicker regardless of whether you're using an RGB monitor or a component TV.

I dunno, I haven't done much with newer TV's but the way he described running a PCB in RGB->Component made it sound like he would be upscanning as he said 480i which is 2x the lines of RGB, which would imply upscanning which usually has flicker (in my exp) Like Matt said you could use a multisync monitor that supports those lower frequencies like a Multisync II or 3DS

Ooh, now that's a good idea - it cuts out a lot of components from the conversion circuit and potentially cuts the cost in half. Now why didn't I think of that? I'll have to remember this...

But when I think about it, I don't think I'll be making something any time soon that uses both S-Video and component...

There's always quality loss whenever you convert one analog signal to something else. Having no loss of quality would violate the second law of thermodynamics.

But happily, the quality drop is very small, and most people wouldn't notice it.

Agreed, I was wrong. Have to go and study up on my thermodynamics now.;)

That's the law that says "the entropy of the video signal is always increasing" :)

680, I'd guess that the eye-bleeding video ugliness was probably some issue with the converter you used, or the display. Component looks perfectly good when it's done right.
