The greatest boot up thread got me thinking... out of all those obnoxious, patience testing gmae loading screens, which ones were the best ?
My vote would be the Neo Geo CD juggling monkey. That's a classic. :D

waverace: bluestorm. i love how the loading screen changes depending on the weather.
also, it's not my favorite, but i liked the castlevania sotn sequence.
i know i'm forgetting a few good ones..
Morrowind </sarcasim>
Loading screens are almost never cool.
Ridge Racer for PSX let you play Galaga, right? There's my vote.
Earthworm Jim CD for Sega CD.
G-Darius, since it's pretty seamless with the action.
The bouncing JGR load was pretty cool too. *-neo
Ohohoh! Test Drive on PS2 has PONG for its loading screen. Rock!
ºTracer
yea that screen does rock... theripple effect is amazing and the weather is nifty as hell..Quote:

The PSO loading screen had a pretty trippy tunnel effect. If you looked at the center, it was like you were warping into the level, or maybe I just had too many brews.
Guilty Gear X for the PS2.
Willy Beamish (Sega Cd) loading screen = BEST LOADING SCREEN EVARR!!
Since the game loads like hell ..with loading times reaching a couple of minutes (!!) what the developers did was put a ring of white balls that you can play with.. um..yea. You can twist them around and other stuff.. keeps you pretty busy while going insane at the same time.
Nah, Galaxian.Quote:

Tekken on the PSx let you play the challenge mode from Galaga. That gets my vote.
HOLY SHEEP DIP! I didn't know I was the only one who know about that! :eek:Quote:

I'll have to get the game back again just to see that, and that mini-game. Maybe the load time is better through an emu? who knows.
The loading screens in the Namco Museum games for PSX were pretty cool. I did the ole' loading screen trick with Pac-Man, making him dash back and forth constantly. Can't beat the "loading screens" in Ridge Racer and Tekken, nothing says loading screen loving like a quick shooter in-between fighting and racing.
Dont get your hopes up.. even on an emulator (Gens more specifically) the loading times are IDENTICAL. Which means..Quote:

You get to play with the white balls! :D
GGX2 on PS2 since it shows the character intros as its loading their frames
Soul Reaver on DC.
Barring that, the sketches-to-color-to-in-game-models in Mark of Kri was pretty damn cool looking. Quite possibly the best part of the game.
Bangaioh
Metal Slug for Saturn or for the Neo Geo CD gets my vote-- the gratuitous little monkey is just too much.
I like the less-intrusive ones. Like the loading screen between areas in CV:SotN, where you walk through a short corridor.
Suikoden and the random running fellow.
I like the games where the character is taking an elevator or some other "game reason" for the delay. Aliens vs. Predator for the Jaguar comes to mind.
Soul Calibur :D I get to stare at sweet portraits of the characters for 3 seconds :D
I liked how SFA3 on PSX showed different pieces of character art during load screens. SOTN's load screen is fun to play with. Einhander has a pretty cool "countdown" load screen when you start the game, and the other loading screens look nice too. The same goes for Front Mission 3...I just like watching that little bar go through its animation. :)
Symphony of the Night deserves at least a mention.
I'll second that. The game's whole presentation was slick as hell.Quote:

Which is funny, because the Jaguar was a cart-based system.Quote:

I can't think of any right now, but a couple N64 games had loading.Quote:

A couple of SNES games also had loading. Street Fighter Alpha 2 being the most notable user of it. How the hell they even got that game on the SNES is a mystery to me.
Like in Metroid Prime?Quote:

Wipeout 64 did. Can't think of any more.Quote:

Hmm... didn't one of the Turoks also have some loading? I think part 2, but I never played it myself.Quote:

From what I hear, Quake 1 (N64) had loading times.
Are you implying that you like the loading screen because it was nonexistant? Well, the game does actually have a loading screen, and sometimes, the game will freeze and you'll see the word "SPOOLING" pop up. I'll tell you this, the PSX version's title screen is damn cool, too bad they made the DC's static.Quote:
Soul Reaver on DC.
The special chip used in the cartridge was a compression chip. Hardware compression is much better than software, or something to that effect. A couple of other games did this. Star Ocean used the same chip, and Lord of Elemental along with Oshaberi Parodius used a different one. I've always been curious about how big the games would be without compression~Quote:

I've never played/heard of any of those, so I'll stay stunned at SFA 2. I figured it had to be compressed, but still... amazing feat for the technology.
All loading screens suck, becasue they make you wait..
ITs like asking what kind of bandaid you like, when you start to bleed...
Galactic Attack's loading screen isn't bad... basically, it's the explosion of the boss you just defeated. ;) The next stage is being surreptitiously loaded in during all that conflagration.
I guess I'd have to agree with The Mark of Kri, but I'm not sure that it actually counts as a loading screen. It seems to me like a style choice for presenting the story. I imagine the levels actually load pretty quickly.
