I keep hearing about IRC, especially on anime boards but I have no clue what it is... I was hoping someone here could shead some light on what it is and how to use it.
Also what program do I use for IRC and how does one download on IRC? I have absolutely no IRC knowledge so if you try to explain it so try to keep it simple to understand as possible ;) :)

-What is IRC?
Internet Relay Chat. In English? Chat rooms hosted on different servers.
-How do I use IRC?
Well first you need a client (Program) to connect to an IRC server. To keep it simple, I suggest mIRC (http://mirc.com). As you become more familiar with IRC, you might find that other clients are better for you, but mIRC is probably the most newbie friendly.
-So I got mIRC, what now?
Find out what server the channel (Chat room) you want to join is hosted on. Just select the server from the list (mIRC should already have it), fill out the information (Real name, screen name, e-mail, ect) and click connect. Once connected type '/join #roomnamehere' and there you go.
Whenever you join a new server, don't forget to register your nick! Read the message when you get connected to the server for instructions on how to do that. Typically it's just sending a command or two to a bot called Nickserv.

If you want to practice connecting to servers and learning commands, I can help you out over in my channel.
In the main options window for mIRC (The one you see when you start it up), for "IRC Network" select "Otherside". Once connected type "/join #CTC" and if I'm not downstairs making waffles (Like Im about to go do) then I can just teach you most of the commands you'll need.

There's also a program that makes downloading stuff off of IRC even easier, but you should have a basic grasp of navigating the servers first.
Uhg, to this day I still hate dealing with FServes. XDCC lists are cool, but if the person has a lot of files then it can take forever. FServes are just a pain..
