Which A/V selector should I buy?

Because I don't have one yet. I'm still in the process of moving and I want to have one ready for me to setup when I finish moving. I can manually hookup my other/retro systems whenever I need to. My current stuff includes

GameCube - Will be using component audio/video
Dreamcast - s-video
Xbox - component audio/video
PS2 - component audio/video
DVD Player - s-video...unless I can find some component a/v cables for cheap.

I'll be getting some 5.1 speakers in the future, whether it affects the a/v selector purchasing or not, I don't know, I'm new to this.

The only component switcher (which you will definitely need) is made by JVC, it'll run you a very steep 80-90 bucks and only has 3 or four slots on it (I THINK 3 though). My friend just bought one. And I definitely recommend component cables for your DVD player which you can pick up at any Best Buy, Frys, or like Radio Shack. If your TV can do progressive scan, definitely go with a pro-scan DVD player if at all possible. I hope this helps at all...! And no, the switchbox won't have anything to do with your 5.1 setup.

I've found that I have to spend about $100 for a quality switcher, I guess it's ok. I don't have progressive scan on my TV. :( Thank you, anything helps. :)

for one with component and optical, yeah look to spend ~$100 and up basically. but for just component, if you wanna go cheap, get 2 regular switchboxes. its a ghetto way of doing it, but it works.

For the audio switch, check out a thread in the gaming forums. Luckily, that one is cheap, I think around 20 bucks or so. I don't know if that component switch also has a switch for digital audio.

If you want a really cheap one, you'd be just as better off with stereo. Wait until you have money.

5.1 is not an investment to take lightly. That's unless you like constant upgrading when you hear better quality elsewhere. I purchased a 5.1 setup over five years ago and have yet to upgrade because I bought high quality speakers and a nice DD/DTS 5.1 receiver. I'll "maybe" upgrade later on, once 6.1 (or EX/ES) becomes more widely used and/or is the new standard (or whatever else replaces it).

Define "really cheap." I am a college student on a tight budget and I think I put together a good system for the money.

Agree. Anything that comes as a kit is trash in The Grand Scheme of Things. Then again a decent setup can cost more than a few semesters of college.

Might as well pick up some Sony or JVC trash until a real job can buy the real gear. I got an old Sony DAV-S300 that works ok and it only cost me a few hundred. Avoid listening to any good speakers and the cheap ones will sound just great :D
