Between 600 and 1,500 Iraqi gunmen battled the Americans as they rolled through Baghdad streets today, killing one American tank driver and wounding six other American soldiers. American commanders on the scene estimated that more than 1,000 were killed. Later, officers at Central Command in Doha, Qatar, put the number much higher — 2,000 to 3,000 — and there was no explanation for the variance.

Damn, 600-3,000 (!) Iraqi gunfighters dead? We rolled 60 tanks through the heart of Baghdad, and that was the number they took out over the course of about 3 hours. Insane.

The British soldiers suffered defeat on the dusty streets of Umm Khayyal, when they took on the local football team.

A thousand spectators came from all ends of the town to watch the match, with the players wearing full strip, boots and squad numbers.

The home side was rallied to a 9-3 victory by throngs of screaming men and children, who marked out the boundaries of the pitch.

Lovely story, eh?

I mean, come on, that story is as appealing, as pleasing as hearing a POW's been rescued, in a way, isn't it?

As long as pics of childern with their skulls smashed by debris are being published, I take the PR stories with a grain of salt the size of my fist.

But I do like to hear that the Iraqi public are getting along with our troops. Gives me hope that this thing will be over soon, which is good for everybody...
