A person like Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, is able to have an effect on the world, is able to provide comfort to Baath party sympathizers, anti-war protesters, BECAUSE of the monetary support of the people who attend their movies. They've been elevated into a position that makes them more effective than the average protester BECAUSE of the people who have paid for movie tickets.
So, if you continue to pay for movie tickets to Sean Penn movies, then you will continue to be complicit in the elevation of Sean Penn to a position where he can do MORE than the AVERAGE person to protest against the war, provide comfort to the enemy, whatever.
It's not about taking away Sean Penn's right to protest. It's about taking away the elevated protest capabilities that Sean Penn's fame have given him. No matter what happens to Sean Penn, he will always maintain (at least) the right of protest that every average American has, which is a pretty sizable, fantastic, rare thing.
It's a grassroots form of protest, this thing you're referring to as blackballing.
