Of course.
It's not so much that. I mean, I'm glad that it's out here. I hope that it does well and that more games, maybe even the arcade machines will find themselves state-side. But, it's just disappointing.Quote:

Just got it today. 5 Key songs are way harder than even the 7 key. I don't know what they're doing with the 2 star songs on 5 key... I can pass more of the 1 star songs on 7 key after 2 hours of playing. It's gonna take some work to get better at this game I can see. I'm really impressed with the controller. It seems very well built. ALthough the scratching doesn't seem very loose, but I can make do.
Whoa whoa whoa.... I've never gotten a AAA in my life and this game just handed me three of them.... The grading appears to be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off.
The grading is two steps down.
What's an A in a normal IIDX is an A3 there.
That can easily be fixed. All you have to do is unscrew one of the screws a little bit and adjust the looseness of the turntable for your liking. I opened my controller up right off the bat and dissected it to see the differences, getting to the turntable screw is a snap. I made mine a lot nicer, I can get two-three full revolutions with a small spin now. Makes scratching much easier.Quote:

Not really feeling the song selection but I guess that's a widespread sentiment. Do any of the imports focus on jungle/drum'n'bass? I used to amateur DJ that stuff and it would be so fun in this game (not that this game is anything like DJ-ing). The couple d'n'b songs I've heard so far on here are kinda lame.
Okay, that's it. Don't know if I'll be able to maintain my focus to get really good, and go deep into the whole scene, but I'd like to.
The crux of the whole game. Seriously, when you're doing 7 stars on 7 key the game will be just as satisfying. I feel that when I can consistently clear every 7 star song will be when I'm done, not the flashing sevens. There's so many I am so close to...and I still only have one mix! all those songs to clear...<drools>Quote:

Does anyone use the arcade style controller? It's like $4-500 but it's so dreamy. Not that I'm even thinking about it at this point since I'm still such a newb and may punk out when I realize I still suck even after X hours of practice (this always happens to me with shooters).
Today I finally passed The Shining Polaris, I don't know why it took me so long to clear. The end is just unexpected. Just like Era, with it's doubles that I just can't read at 5 speed.
I've got 13 tracks left to clear on 5th style 7 key.
They were in Beatmania.... up to 2nd Mix. 1998. That was it. They've been absent since then because nobody really cares for them. I guess they brought it back for the US release to further push the whole 'dj' aspect or whatever.Quote:

Nomi has one, and it's nice. Nice and loud, but nice. I think I'd be completely satisfied with a US controller, myself, but she swears by the ASC. Just don't think that it'll help you skill-wise, in the long run.Quote:

Yeah, it would be more to just have the true arcade feeling in the home. I think what I really want is a full cabinet. Maybe when I win the lottery.Quote:

I still prefer the ASC because I have no rhythm and the clicking helps, but I'm considering selling it, as that's $300 I could really use right about now.
I just read that the buttons don't light up on the home ASC? That makes it at least 25% less desirable to me.
Nope, they don't. The start and select buttons are basically the same as the KOC, and all of the buttons themselves are made of the same material as the KOC. They do have microswitches underneath. I guess one small benefit is that it is possible to take the turntable labels from arcade IIDX machines and slap them onto the home ASC.
Really the main benefit of the ASC is the circuitry and the arcade-exact dimensions behind the controller. There's really no point to get one unless IIDX is the (not one of, the) main if not only video game series you ever play.
I guess it's not for me then. I'm *really* into it all right now. But I know myself, and it's probably just a phase. I've been watching a lot of the videos on youtube (just searched on "IIDX" and it came up with tons), and I'm half-inspired, half-deflated. Like that Lisu guy who plays all the keys with one hand. How many years of practice do I have ahead of me before I could even approach a fraction of that skill? Kinda disheartening.
LISU is a IIDX GOD, so do not be too discouraged. I have been playing Pop'n for a year and IIDX for a month and the level of skill improvement if you practice is dramatic. Also, use practice mode....I know it seems boring, but it helps so much...
Yes, I've already had to resort to practice mode to get some scaling down. I love modes like that where you can try just the difficult parts of games over and over and over. Like the level section select in Ikaruga. Kinda makes me feel less of a man though (not that I needed help) when I know people are mastering these games in the arcade with no level select or practice modes to to speak of.
It just makes me feel bad when I hit a wall. I seriously can't read the end of Era at normal speed, but turn it down one notch and I'm fine.
Why are you playing anything at normal speed?
0 < 70bpm : hi4 sudden
71 < 100bpm : hi3 sudden
101 < 120bpm : hi2 sudden
121 < 160bpm: hi4
161 < 180bpm: hi3
181 < 300bpm: hi2
You probably won't be able to use that breakdown right away but work up to it. Era at hi1 should feel much easier than without at this point for you.
I think maybe he meant dropping the speed in the training mode, so that the song actually plays slower.
Exactly, and it works too. Slow it down until you learn (memorize) the part, then speed it up until you can hit it. Improvement in this game comes in leaps, one day you can read shit that your brain could just not wrap around before. Use the highest speed mods you can, so that you can get used to reading stuff as fast as possible...it really helps later when big clumps start appearing and you need them as spaced out as possible to parse the timing.
Correct.Quote:

Cowutopia, I know exactly what you mean. I don't really practice what I preach, as I loathe training mode (rather just play!). It's like playing guitar or piano, the more you practice, eventually the nuances become programmed into your brain and everything becomes second nature, then it's just reading everything....and speeding up your fingers ;)

I'm up to Hi2 right now, and all it's done for me is helped me pass songs I use to only dream of passing.
Yep, for me it's
BPM 200+ HS2
BPM 170+ HS3
BPM anything else below around 170 HS4 if available
and I fucking hate songs of like less than 100 BPM even with HS4...gotta try the sudden on these....
In Pop'n I shoot for around a 600 final BPM...HS seems a little faster on IIDX
Like people have said before me: Lisu is nuts, so don't compare yourself to him ever (until you sleep with your controller in hand, or something).Quote:

The big problems you hit when one-hand playing is when you get to monster Light7's, Most 7Keys and Anothers, because usually these songs are chordtastic and the crap you gotta do to get all these buttons with one hand is rediculous (Thunder, Light7 comes to mind).
But, keep in mind that all I've ever done is play one handed (much to some discouragement from friends) and play like total shit if I use two hands, so it's a trade off. Recently, I think it's helped me tackle the 14-key songs.
I've heard one handing is easier if you use your left hand. But dog$ would have to let us know.
Sooo.... The new Drummania Guitar Freaks is FINALLY out for PS2. Anybody know anything about it? Does it still support external USB/MIDI drum sets like the last one did?
I'm going to let Lisu do his thing and not worry too much about never reaching his level. For now, I'm still having so much fun with this game. I actually find myself smiling frequently as I play (usually when I'm failing really bad), which is not usual for me, at least not lately. And I really like the tracklist for the most part. Not nearly as awful as I was lead to believe. Although I have no experience with the JP releases, so maybe it's a matter of not being spoiled.Quote:

I passed all the five key songs except the 6s and 7s, which I still go back and work on now and then, and definitely intend to clear at some point. But mostly now I'm doing the IIDX stuff and working methodically through all the songs on Beginner, then Normal, etc. Like some people said up there, one day the notes just look like a mess, and then the next, you're somehow able to read them. And I love when my hand says, "damnit, brain. Fine, sit there, I'll handle this", and goes on autopilot, churning out accurate notes far faster than my brain is actually processing them. This has been happening more and more frequently and it's quite invigorating. I use HI3 and HI4 almost exclusively now and it's helped tremendously.
Such a fun game. I'm so glad I finally got a version. I remember playing the Wonderswan one in like '99 (I think it had a little clip-on turntable over the d-pad), and then seeing the arcade machines everywhere in Tokyo in 2001, but being too scared to try it. This one $60 purchase though is actually going to cost me FAR more since I don't see any way out of collecting all the IIDX styles. Unless Konami announces some monster collection for PS3 with every song.
Bumping for the best secret ever put into a IIDX game. What the hell were the developers at Konami smoking when they thought this was a good idea?... I want some.
(Blah blah IIDX RED came out blah blah anyone who cares already has it blah blah pants.)
