Well, friends, we're now about two weeks away from Happy Sky's release. I hope Himeya gets it to me before Christmas. With their ridiculous shipping prices, they certainly should.
I am a wealth of contradictions; I love 9th Style so much now, it's easily my favorite style after RED. Stuff like TaQ's Karma? Genius!
So when are you going to stop wasting money on handheld shit and start wasting money on old 5key releases. They're still worth playing to an extent, y'know.
HS comes out in 2 weeks and I probably won't be able to play it for 4. LEs are expensive enough as it is, fuck if I'm paying another $25+ to ship it quicker. I've done that once and what do I have to show for it.
So, I'm glad somebody else bumped this. I found the US beatmania for $29 with Controller at Target and picked it up. Somebody recommend some shit for me.

Get whatever you can find cheap, really. RED is the nicest in terms of presentation and features, but it ranges somewhere between hard and face rapingly difficult.
Personally, I tell noobs to start with 6th. It has a selection of 'classic' (read: overplayed) songs from that era (3rd-5th), and the drill mode is really useful for easing your way into the game (finish that and you'll be good enough to pass 7s and 8s).

I started with with RED (11th) and I love it. Yeah it does have a steeper learning curve than most games, but it's totally rewarding and always great to listen to.

No no no no no. Playing 5key to get better at 7key is a big mistake. I highly HIGHLY recommend you just get the hell away from 5key and start on Beginner 7key. It seems like perfecting 5key would make 7key easier but I really didn't find that at all and everyone but dog$ will probably insist that you just play the 7key.Quote:

Prolly not until I have all the styles, if ever. Starting out on 5-key is one thing, but regressing to it after playing 7-key seems like a recipe for unsatisfaction. Also, I really don't like the song selection much on 3rd Style at all, so I'm worried I might not be a fan of the earlier music in general.Quote:

Finding out what really helps varies for everyone, though - the only thing we all can do is just play more. I will say that I personally still warm up by playing the hardest songs available on Random, figuring that anything else I play afterward has to be somewhat easier than that. Usually it is.

Do you use both hands for the 7 keys? Do you slap them with your hands like Pop'n or use your fingers like a piano? How do you hit the turntable?

You use your fingers like a piano, generally with one hand covering the TT and keys 1+2, maybe more if you have big hands, the other covering the rest. Search "IIDX" on youtube to see some example play styles in action.
Don't assign specific keys to specific fingers for all cases, that'll get you fucked. Just figure out hand positions that work for different situations. I tend to use my thumbs a lot, too.
Oh, and the numerical song difficulties, while pretty flaky, are generally consistent amongst all the difficulty levels. So, if you can do three-star songs in Beginner, don't be afraid to venture out into Light7 twos and threes.

That'll happen, it's the best Style in my opinion but not the most beginner-friendly. Just keep in Beginner mode and don't be afraid to try things in Light7 after a while, you'll never improve unless you try songs that do kick your ass a little.Quote:

After 2 weeks, I finally got the feel of where all 7 keys were. That's probably the most important thing when starting out.

It's some sort of average -- probably the average of all AC scores on the disc. The songs that do not have them are new to the home release (the CS songs and the new charts for Scripted Connection).Quote:

Random tidbit that wasn't immediately apparent: the grade sorts sub sort by how close you are to the next grade (in total EX, not percentage).

As of Red (actually probably as of 9th, but they didn't get it right until Red) the timing windows for 7key were shrunk. It's fairly noticeable; songs you can AAA at home you will have trouble AAing in the arcade. So comparing arcade scores to home scores is just not fair.Quote:

That's pretty much the strangest thing I ever heard.
It makes sense to raise that score ceiling and whatnot, but it's nutty that they'd limit it to one mode and retain the old windows with the CS versions.
