Super Monkey Ball 2 has dropped to $29.99 at a few stores in my area including one that has part 1 for $29.99 as well. I'm interested in picking up one of them but which is better? As I recall some board members were unhappy with part 2. Opinions please. *-neo
Part one is better for single player. The courses are much more gimmicky in part two -- it's actually pretty unfun a lot of the time.
SMB2 may be better for multiplayer, though -- there are twice as many mini-games.

I prefer SMB1 for single and multiplayer since I'm fond of Monkey Target and Monkey Golf, and both were screwed to hell in 2.
Monkey Ball 2 is gimmicky shit. It has more multiplayer modes than the first, but the original 4 are still the best. Don't buy 2.

monkey target is excellent in both games. while 2 loses the sloped targets, it adds simultaneous play, which more than makes up for it.
I think you should get both Super Mokey Balls. They are two of the best games on the Gamecube and they are both slightly different. You would deprive yourself not to own both:
Super Monkey Ball has the better single player game as far as the levels are concerned. There are some levels in Super Monkey Ball 2 that are just plain STUPID. There are levels in part 2 that have no strategy...the only strategy is figuring out the trick or YES, the gimmick to the level. The levels in SMB are just designed much better. Although, thats not to say that SMB2 doesn't have some good single player levels. The single player in SMB2 is very good at times. Monkey Ball 2 has a story mode to it as well, but really it doesn't add much to the game...if anything, the story mode will make you have less respect for the monkeys. You do not want to see their song and dance :)
Multiplayer is also a toss up in my opinion. They both have their pros and cons. "Monkey Fight", and "Monkey Race" are actually better in part 1. For Monkey Fight, they pulled the camera back a little too far in SMB2 and it doesn't play the same. I can't really describe what they changed. It just doesn't feel right. Overall, its just not as fun. "Monkey Race" sadly faces the same gimmick problem in SMB2. In SMB the races were fast paced and fun, and they took place on tracks that you could actually race on. SMB2's tracks are gimmicky and BARELY RACEABLE. "Monkey Target" is improved in SMB2. It is now much more enjoyable to play with friends and it is faster paced. SMB2 also improves on "Monkey Bowling" and "Monkey Billiards" with just more options in general. SMB2 has way more mini-games overall. The only problem is figuring out which ones are actually fun. "Monkey Boat Race" (whatever it is called) is practically useless and unplayable in my opinion. "Monkey Baseball"...well its not that great because its not actual baseball. "Monkey Tennis" is new for SMB2. Its like a watered down Mario Tennis. SMB2 also includes light gun shooter type mini games and "Monkey Soccer."
Since SMB2 has so many more mini-games than SMB it should be easy for me to tell you to get SMB2 for the multiplayer. However, I can't put it that simply. This is due to the fact that the best parts of SMB: Monkey Fight and Monkey Race are actually better in part 1. I think you should get both and then play what ever suits your mood for any occasion.
I just want to say that I got SMB a couple months ago and that it is a great game. It's wonderfully old-school.
