For me it's a close match between the SNES and PS1. They both have the largest quantity of titles in the genre, but I believe that the ps1's RPG's are superior because the genre is an evolutionary one, and games like Valkrie Profile and miles ahead of their SNES bretheren.:)
The PS1 by a landslide. The SNES had several awesome titles, but it couldn't beat the sheer quantity of great RPGs that the PS1 had. Heck, they are still releasing titles for the PS1, including some of those that made the SNES the place for RPGs in its time.

The PSX was nice, but let's face it, any platform without Super Chinese Land is a dead platform.
Playstation for the sheer fact that more of the rpgs were localized. Most of my favorite rpgs are on the SNES, but there are more PS rpgs that I enjoy playing.
The PSX wins out over the SNES due to Persona. The Saturn and DC had some nice ones as well.
Playstation in the USA by far... now if the Super Nintendo's RPG releases where the same as the Super Famicom's then it would have been much closer to Super Nintendo because...

In 16bit days it was SNES. Genesis barely had any, and couldnt really compete with the great rpgs that SNES had.
During 32bit era, PSX took the leading spot, and still remains BEST RPG system, with awesome list of rpgs.
As for now, its PS2 since neither Cube or Xbox have any worthy RPGs(except PSO).
I totally forgot about the Genny's great RPGs like Light Crusader and Sword of Vermillion. Warsong is another good one.
Playstation. Hands down.
I would say PS but thats because many old geat RPGs are making there way onto the PS.

The Playstation easily has the most quantity and quality of RPGs.
I don't factor in games that never came out in English since virtually everyone outside of Japan can't play them. Translated roms are an awesome creation but they tend to rewrite history since those games were as good as non-existent upon their release for most people.
There are loads of great ps1 RPG's that never made it to the US.

basically whatever platform is winning in japan is going to be the best RPG platform. it's not even a question that's difficult to answer.
and i think the playstation is better. the only SNES RPG that isn't on playstation that is truly crucial for the survival of mankind is lufia 2. yes, i mean domestic ones.
I vote for the PS1. I agree with NeoXeedeater in that I only count English versions of the game. But my reasons are more selfish. I don't care about the rest of the world outside of Japan, only myself. I cannot enjoy RPGs in other languages. The PS1 gave me an English version of Grandia. Even though it is a bad translation of a bad port, it was good enough for me. FFT, 2 Suikoden's, 2 Lunar's, Arc the Lad Collection, DQ7, all the Square collections, 2 Vandal Hearts and others puts it over the top. I'd rate the Genesis/Sega CD second. The Phantasy Star games, Shining Force games, Shining the Darkness, etc plus the original Lunars on sega Cd are all great. Snes is a close third but its best games are also on the PS1 (Chrono Trigger, FF4, FF6). If its imports got translated, it would probably be higher as I've actually played a few of those in Japanese and would have really liked them in English.
Many of those SNES RPG's have been fan transalated. I didn't like the Genny's RPG library too much,I hate PS 2 and 3, and the SNES had more games quantity wise..
I love Lunar alot though, it was the best RPG to be brought over stateside in that era IMO. But it can't hold a candle to SNES import games like Tales of Phantasia.
You guys are on smack. Best US system for RPGs is still undoubtedly the Sega CD. Quality that is unsurpassed. The Lunar "remakes" on PS1 are utter shit compared to the originals. The only US version of Snatcher. The only US version of Popful Mail. Shining Force CD is still better than 99% of the RPGs out there. Vay and Dark Wizard. Quality always wins over quantity.
Most people probably aren't including Strategy/RPGs like Shining Force and Dark Wizard or Action/RPGs like Popful Mail. And there's no way Snatcher counts as an RPG.

If quantity is the only thing that matters, then why even have a discussion about it, since PS1 is the no-brainer choice.
Personally my favorite RPG system was the Genesis, because of Phantasy Star 2 and 4.
I'm going with PS1 because it has like 7 of my top 10 RPGs of all time.
Of course, not many gamers know Japanese, so that's a moot point I guess.Quote:

If you know Japanese, then well I guess its a toss-up between... most systems, really. Im pretty sure that every successful system in Japan had a strong RPG lineup.
But if you dont know Japanese... PSX. Well, PS2 I guess since it plays PSX games and has some swell games of its own like Suikoden III, Final Fantasy X, and Pryzm The Dark Unicorn.
While everyone thought the SNES RPG lineup here in America was pretty strong, take a look at it one day. Its actually pretty weak. Sure, you had two FFs, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana, but that was really about it. No Front Mission, no Dragon Warrior (after DW7 Id say thats a plus, but hey...). We got maybe 1/7th of the quality output here, plus random shit here and there like Brain Lord and 7th Saga.
As for PSX, even if we got like 4/7th, thats a lot better. Front Mission, all the FFs, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Breath of Fire, blah blah blah... plus updated versions of Lunar and titles like FF5 which didnt make it here during SNES. And yes, the PSX did get Grandia, and quite frankly I would rather be able to read my RPGs than pretend like Im hardcore and play one that is unreadable to my eyes.
We're never gonna get 7/7th, because even if every RPG was translated to English, a lot of richness would undoubtedly be lost in the translation (just think of games like PS: Torment with lots of classical references... I doubt the Japanese know much about about classical Western literature than we know about Eastern). So... learn Japanese if you wanna get all the good RPGs, I suppose.
PSX was undoubtedly better than the SNES for RPG output.
I am going to ignore most of your trolling and make one point: The PSX Lunar games don't have random battles. Do the Sega CD ones? Because, if they do, then that automatically makes the PSX games better. Fin.Quote:

Dragon Force and Legend of Oasis were a good games, but they are not tradition rpgs, but strat and action rpgs respectably.

Grandia was superior to Lunar. It had better characters and one of the best battle systems ever.
theres no doubt that the PSX got alot more RPGs than any other system
and its hard for me to pick between the PSX and SNES as my fav RPG system
a part of me wants to say PSX cause it got the most by far
but a part of me wants to say SNES because i have never enjoyed RPGs like i did during the SNES days, i just had so much more fun with RPGs then
im gonna have to say its a tie for me between SNES/PSX

the PS version has fewer dungeons, the music is the same, and the graphics are not really better. and the CG anime is kind of butt looking now, but the sega CD version's sprite cinemas are top-class (though that's a hardcore sort of way to view it, that's how i feel.)
lunar 2 kind of sucks anyway, imo.
