Sony's games aren't that good

I hear nothing but praise for games like Mark of Kri and Sly Cooper but I really don't think Sony's first-party stuff is in the same league as Nintendo, Sega or Konami's best games. I still have enjoyed games like Ico and Drakan but there isn't a single Sony-made game from this era that I would give a 9/10 to and very few I would give an 8/10 to.

Not like it matters to the PS2 since it has incredible third-party support. I just don't see what's so great about the first-party games on it.

Is it just me?

Mark of Kri and Sly Cooper I think as second tier (but still great), but ICO, Skygunner, and Ape Escape 2 (it's impossible that I'll dislike that one) are terrific.

Yes, it's just you. Sony has done rather well for themselves in this era. They may have put out some real stinkers in the past, but they've really turned around. Oh yeah, The Mark of Kri was one the best games of 2002.

I thought Sky Gunner was third-party. My bad.

I loved Ape Escape so I do have high hopes for the sequel.

I don't think Sony has anything to worry about.

Nope, you're not alone. Ico rocks. Saru Get You! 2 gets a passing grade(haven't played it enough though). The rest for PS2 really suck IMHO.

Ore no Ryori was crazy dope too, but that's old stuff.

I havn't played the first one, but I had a lot fun with Saru! Get You! 2. A bit on the easy side is the only complaint I have towards the game. Hopefully I get to try Pipo Saru 2001 soon.

I agree with neozeedeater.
Sony made some good' uns, but nowhere near the quantity and quality Sega, Nintendo, Capcom etc have.

Of course it depends on what games you prefer, but for the 'retro' gamer that I am :p (2D shmups, platformers, puzzlers, beatm ups) Sony doesn't mean squad to me. (ICO, Gatcharock, maybe Ape Escape 2, and that's it)

I agree with NeoZeed. SkyGunner, Frequency, and Amplitude are incredible, the rest are decent or worse. Mark of Kri was almost great but was hampered by overly-long animations and a blatant this-is-how-you-beat-the-level-no-improvising-allowed setup. Ape Escape was fun, but it's been a long time since I played it and I never felt like buying it. Ico would've been great if they would've removed all that unnessecary, pathetic combat that turned the game into half brilliance/half sheer annoyance. Having the female got stolen off-screen half the time and not being able to see where she is to get to her didn't help matters.

They're definately better than they used to be, but they still need a lot of work. And judging from Sky Gunner and Ico, they also need to start working on more powerful hardware.

Note: I haven't played Sly Cooper yet.

I'd give ICO a 10/10, but that's just me :)

IT's better than MS's support.

As the Gamecube trails we begin to see the fading importance of first parties. Hopefully we will come to our senses and phase them out soon enough.

I should have specified that I was talking about the current era. I think I enjoyed their PS1 stuff more. Omega Boost! And publishing is another story. Tenchu and Elemental Gearbolt are excellent.

I never said that Sony's games sucked or anything. I like them. It's just when I think of the best console games of this era I think of stuff like GTA3, Sega's DC line-up(Jet Grind, Shenmue, PSO, Sonic Adv), Nintendo's GC stuff(Metroid Prime, Wind Waker). For me, a top 10 games of this era list wouldn't include a game developed by a Sony-owned team.

Any news on Mojibribon? I hope it gets a western release.

I like Sly but I don't think it's the masterpiece many people make it out to be. I would give it a 7.5/10.

Dark Cloud 2 I plan on buying since I liked the demo the second time I tried it. Sony doesn't own Level 5 though.

Well, first party software seems less important these days, simply because Sony and Especially Microsoft are so scattershot with it. With NCL 1st party stuff, it's nearly guaranteed to be excellent, but Sony has always taken a more risky approach, trying lots of smaller, more unique titles with a wide variety of small dev houses. Sometimes the results are big hits (Gran Turismo), but more often the successes are smaller, creative games (jumping flash, anything by Nana On Sha). Microsoft, on the other hand, has Halo...and uh, some other games.

Yeah, first-party support isn't vital like it used to be. I agree with Frogacuda that the industry needs to abandon the first-party model. I can't wait for the day when console content isn't dictated by a first-party.

I don't think they have a very good management structure, when compared to sega or nintendo. They have thousands of small teams, most of them like 989 are crap. However, alot of good teams like NanoOnNasha(or whatever you call em?) live under them.

Nintendo games are held to a much higher standard than Sony games. So any successful/acclaimed Sony game is essentially a "pleasant and unexpected surprise". Nintendo doesn't have that luxury, because their games are scrutinized to a far higher degree.

For example, Ico is a masterpiece, while Pikmin is too short. Sly Cooper is a fantastic game, while Super Mario Sunshine is a huge disappointment. Did I mention how you can easily play through Sly Cooper is one sitting, or that Sly Cooper is a platformer that actually has very little in common with Super Mario Sunshine (waterpack vs. weapon/hook, open/expansive levels and objectives vs. mostly small/very linear levels and some stealth based gameplay)?

Isn't Sucker Punch Productions a third party? I thought Sly Cooper was great while it lasted. It's refreshing to see the developers weren't trying to "out-Mario" the Mario games in their platformer.

And SkyGunner was boring. I love Ico and Jumping Flash though.

For me anyway... I am actually shocked and surprised at how much quality product Sony puts out these days. I guess I was not noticing it until I realised all at once. Good for them.

What Dark Cloud are you talking about, cause the first one sucked and the second one isn't by a first party. Sly Cooper is decent, Sky Gunner is slowdown from hell, and Ratchet & Clank is so so. I agree that Sony makes some good quality games, but not the type that get me excited like Nintendo's.

Sly Cooper was made by Sucker Punch, who also made Rocket: Robot on Wheels for N64. I don't think Sony owns them now...or do they?

It's not just you. Sly Cooper and Jak & Daxter are a 8/10s. I can't think of a single other Sony title that is even that good. These people who claim Ratchet & Clank, and Ico are the second coming confuse me, and I won't even get into 989's trash.

Oh, and for Despair, Eternal Darkness destroys Primal in every conceivable way, and, yes, I own both.

Capcom didn't too much for the psx. A few 2D fighters(most of them done better on the saturn) , Strider2 and a bunch of Megaman games were all that they did.:p

No way Yoshi. While I somewhat enjoyed ED, it ended up being dissapointing, and overhyped. Its a decent game but not THAT good, as many will claim.

I like Primal story, visuals, voice acting, designs and other things. Sure its not flawless, and there are some bugs, but I find the story engaging, puzzles interesting and even combat it enjoyable.

I ordered some GBA games from them around Christmas. Took a week or two to get them, but they got here, and they threw in some free goodies, too. I think they ship from Japan...? I've been looking for a legit copy of this game forever. It's sooo good. BUY IT.

I've been all about Sony's games recently. Mark of Kri, Primal, Medievil, Sly C., and most of the others. I think they're great stuffs, and if Sony's dev tema only stand to get better, than what's the problem?

I think the Sony stuff is really good right now but they just need to keep it coming.

Sony is far far far far from my favourite developer. I mainly just like the games I listed, as well as Arc the Lad. I am happily surprised at the quality games they've been making lately. I basically don't care for Nintendo's first party games. I think they're very overrated. Meh, it's just an opinion though.. I don't care if other people feel differently than I do - which is why I find it so strange/funny when other people get their knickers in a twist when I don't reconfirm theirs.

Oh yeh, and I am very much of "a reader". i respect anyone's right to enjoy any book as much as they want, but chances are that anyone who thinks Gatsy is the pinnacle of literature probably has not read many books outside of high school. I think Sony first party games have gotten alot better than what they were making

but i personaly dont find a great sony game as good as a great Capcom, Nintendo, Konami game

Mark of Kri was a bit of a dissapointment for me i loved the art style but had a fair amount of issues with the game play and such (still need to pick it up one day) Sly and Ratchet are OK and ill pick them up when theyre GH's and 20 bucks

Jak and Daxter is probably the best thing Sony's put out this Generation and is a pretty good game (i would probably give it an 8/10 )

i think sony still has a long way to go personally

Sony has built a respectable library of good games, but the amount of total crap they release far outnumbers the amount of great Sony games. The 2 hours or so i've played of the Gran Turismo series were probably the 2 most boring hours of my life, and I've seen Battlefield Earth.

Ico was great while it lasted, but it should be a crime to make a game that short and not even attempt to add any extra incentives to play again.

Frequency is probably my favorite Sony published game, but they don't even own Harmonix.

They published Ore no Ryori? thats a good one.

In conclusion, Sony is pretty good, but its obvious that their games aren't the reason for their success. they owe that to good timing and hype.

I think you know when a big title is released, by the action on these forums and others. I remember this board being fairly dead when Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Tourismo 3, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime and now Zelda:WW were released.


Some people may like to dis on GT3 or SMSS now, but when these games were released, they obviously were taking up a lot of gamers time for the first weeks since their release.


With that said, I can say that the PSX saw a ton of better first party titles, through Sony owned companies like Polyphony Digital, and Psygnosis. Titles like Jumping Flash, Wipeout, Gran Tourismo, Colony Wars and Parappa the Rappa were highly touted. The PS2(Sony) seems to rely more on it's 3rd party titles now, then having a need to publish their own titles to survive.


Nintendo and MS are in the same situation SOny was when they released the PSX. With uniqued 3rd party titles mostly being published on the PS2, Nintendo and MS have had to rely on big selling first party titles like Halo, Metroid and Zelda to make their consoles a viable purchase.

Sony's first-party stuff is improving, but only about three of four of their titles are breakthtroughs, and two of them probably won't get sequels.

This is because you like 'quality' titles. And anything else that doesn't hit the bar is a let down. The only games recently for me were The Legend of Zelda, Tenchu 3 (borderline) and Battlefeild 1942.

I'm not denying that Sly Cooper and Kri are 'solid' titles, but they recieve far too much praise for what they are: good at best, technically and artistically.

It's cool to be different, and he's entitled to his opinion. Even though I may not agree, or you may not.

The whole 1st party sony question got me to thinking... I wonder if all the people who got into gaming w/ the PlayStation don't really know what it's like to have a solid, dependable 1st party like Nintendo or Sega. Since the same 'Sony' published popular titles such as Crash Bandicoot and Gran Turismo and horrible drivel like Cardinal Syn, Jersey Devil, Dead Ball Zone, Kileak, Blasto, etc...maybe that's why the world of modern U.S. gaming is so driven by 3rd party software.

Hermie Hopperhead is not a Sony game.

Dark Cloud 2 is, though. You rag on Dark Cloud 2 and I say mean things about your mom.

meh, maybe im old, but the ps2 still has not had enough good games to motivate me to buy it. they all seem half finished at best, and totally derivative and weak at worst. this includes ps1 as well as 2, though ps2 strikes me as much worse.

I loved Jak and Daxter. I loved Ico. I loved Mark of Kri (especially for $9.99 new). I got bored with (but appreciated) Gran Turismo. I absolutely LOVED Ape Escape... caught every monkey, got a gold rank in all Time Trials, 100%, everything.

Are their best games as good as the best Nintendo titles, in terms of quality and production values? Hell the fuck no.

Hermie Hopperhead is the best 2D platformer of the past two console generations in my opinion. It has so much heart in it, plus, a sound effect from it is used as the Yukes opening noise when their logo pops up in games.

i agree with NeoZeedeater and Yoshi. Sony hasn't made anything special really. i do like Gran Turismo a lot though, so i'd say that's the only exception.

i have no intention to ever play Primal and compare the 2, but i agree with Despair. ED the game started off fun, and seemed like it might turn into something good, but it never delivered. the game is nothing special. cool idea though.

oh, and i must say, i wasn't expecting there to be this much respect for 1st Party Sony here. it was even a bit suprising to see how much there was.
one last thing, since so many of you guys like Sony games here, why did no one mention The Getaway? did no one play that?

dark cloud 2 is an excellent game. far better than the first one. be warned, though. it's a time sink. you could easily spend over a hundred hours just playing around with the minigames and sidequests.

Oh yes, Dark Cloud 2 is the one title I believe could challenge a lot of Nintendo's. It is fun, polished and well thought out. It also has a lot of replay value, so it is the exception.

Umihara Kawase is indeed a good game but, my Momma's dead and it's not harder to be better than that. However, you are quite, quite wrong about Bubble Bobble being less than Parasol Stars. If you want I can direct you to some journal articles in which researchers have proven that Bubble Bobble is the finest taito arcade game.

Solid state is better, no load time. That's why I got Elevator Action 2 and Darius Gaiden on cart too. Actually about half of my Arcade shit is available on home systems, but I guess I prefer the board.

Yeah..but I was just saying they don't own Level-5. They may have rights to Dark Cloud, but this isn't about exclusive titles, it's first party ones. Level-5 can go anywhere and make a Dark Cloud clone game. There're still a third party. There working on an Xbox game now.

thats a good point

most of the sony stuff thats good is not made by 1st or 2nd party teams but 3rd party teams

kinda how Sega is doing F-Zero for Nintendo and Namco is doing a Star Fox game

while they both are nintendo published games cant really call them first party games

Sony definitely owns Naughty Dog now and I think they own Sucker Punch. I don't know about Insomniac.

Insomniac used to be Single Trac, and as far as I know, Sony didn't own them as ST, but now owns them as Insomniac.
