I'm all nervous and shit. :)
Did this one for my girl when she was bummed out.
Did this for my girl when she thought I was crazy.
Everyone loves Ronny!
I have no problem with Christianity at all... just have a problem when people use it as an excuse to do shitty things to each other.
I lived in the city for a little over a year... it made me sick.
People love their money too much.
Your Government is lying to you. All the time. Every day.
Suit... check. Tie... check. Doesn't think at all... check.
Not too much to say about this one...
Dig 'em. Very direct, but imaginative.
Would like to see what you might do with additional mixed media work.
The final three are really quite nice, actually. The face on Enemy is a standout.
I'm a big fan of sloppy style artwork, as well.
Those are excellent... seriously
I like it. Simple, blunt and direct. I'd like to see what you can do if you took a bit more time with your painting and tried to add a little detail or added a few more colors but the artistic quality is there. The imagery you chose to convey each message worked very well. I especially like "The Enemy" with the big fake smile and all. "Perfect Citizen" was cool too. And I liked the way you blended the colors in the blue one. I dig it.
Dude, those are classic.
What's the first one, though?
I liked some of them. perfect citizen, and the two smiley faces. Others seemed a bit too obvious, no real need for making any commentary(like the religion + excuses, money + god, flag+lies)On the other hand, using that style for something like "using your turn signal" is a bit of brilliance I say. yeah.
The use of stencils is brilliant. I hate Twentieth-Century art, so I don't know if that's been done much before.
I love the rawness, but some of it is kind of heavy-handed and obvious. I disagree with Dolemite about the need for more detail, but I do think you could use some more subtelty.
My advice: drink more.
If you can produce images that work on more than just the basest levels, you will be the toast of the (TNL) art world.
How much for the turn-signal one? *flips tie behind back*
It looks like something I would love to find as commonly seen grafitti as I go through a train or something. Nice work, should be publicly displayed everywhere.
it has. Or, from my limited experiences it has anyways.Quote:

I love it.
There's a huge series of deep, dark, cynical social commentary pieces, concluded with "use your turn signal"
:D
Love the stencil on the raw drawings too
I like cheer up :)
Can you do an EVIL happy face? I imagine that will be as cool as your "OG" one.
My favorite is "I'm OK" that thing is classic.
Wow...those are excellent. I agree w/ the subtely. But the wacky ones work like Im ok and the blinker one.
My fave has to be the enemy though. So awesome.
Very nice! **Golf claps for more paintings on TNL**
I dig the first two, but "Use your fucking turn signal" is just right. Paint more & post them.
JM
I love the way they came out. The grungy text fits so well with everything you put it on.
I'm Loving the colors on the American flag and how they're smudged together. "The enemy" is also another favorite.
OMFG God sell me "The Enemy"
i could see perfect citizen as a cover for a bands album. That would be sick.
My dad would love the "Use your fucking turn signal", something he yells out very often.
I'm ok - I like that the most.
Hey, I like his style. That's just the detail-whore in me bitching. If I ever get around to posting some of my work you'll see that I have an almost obsessive-compulsive amount of detail. I both love/hate drawing in this style. I love it, because the finished piece looks pretty impressive, but it takes forever to do. Sometimes I think I go so detail-heavy to mask flaws I feel I have in my technique (like, I feel I could improve my drawing of the human form). I've been trying to experiment lately with simpler stuff. I really do like 88's stuff, however. Painting's not easy. I'm a pencil/marker/pastel man myself.Quote:

Damn... I really appreciate everything that all of you have said.
I agree 100% with the "heavy handed" comments... :)
I'm really happy that you guys like this stuff, hopefuly I can put some more up here.
If for some fucking odd reason you are serious about buying this shit from me send me a PM. :)
I agree with rezo about the text not being necessary in all of them, The "I'm ok", "Cheer up", and "Use your fucking turn siganl", being the exceptions for me. It's probably because I just usually hate text in art (everyone at my school used text and even some of the teachers required it in work) it just never seems to gel with the work, or seems to be redundant/repetative. That's not really the case with these though, they all seem cohesive even with the text. Use your fucking turn signal should be on a billboard and be a poster in every drivers ed classroom. It's great stuff.
88 are you classicly trained (going to school for) or do you just do this in your spare time? If the latter there are some great outsider art galleries that would sell your stuff in an instant.
I like perfect citizen the best, but I'm a sucker for the grunge look.
I went to art school for a year and took Photography and Sound Editing courses.Quote:

Thats all the art training I've had.
Where are these places that will sell my stuff? :)
There is a member gallery in Chicago that is pretty nice for an outsider gallery (they usually aren't as nice as commercial galleries) but the name escapes me right now (I'll check the gallery guide and post an update). Also there is a commercial gallery in Chicago called Flatfile (they're a photography gallery, but they're opening an all media gallery soon, depending on the size of your paintings they'd sell em, but they're on a 4 month Sabatical from taking Dossiers.) There are also a few here in Toledo and in Cleveland (also escaping me at the present). If you want to seriously sell your work I can dig out some of the business cards.
On that note, do you have an artist statement? I'd like to read it if you do (i.e. post it), if you don't, you'll need one to sell your work at a commercial gallery.
What the fuck is an artist statement? I'm not even an artist...
I did all those paintings in one afternoon because I needed something to do.
An artist statement is a short (usually) paper about your work (inspiration, media used, technique used, what the entire body of work is about in general.)
The above could be the thesis of your artist statement, but you might want to dress it up with a little more B.S.Quote:

Gallery directors for the most part aren't artist, and they like to have evrything spelled out for them, thus the need for/purpose of the artist statement. It's the number two most important thing to have when pimping out your work to a gallery.
Artist Statements are lame-ass... You just BS some sentimental shit about "ohhhh my influences" and "ohhhhhh i went through a hard time so I painted this"
... Okay, maybe I'm just mad because my art never has any point, so it's hard, and annoying as hell for me to come up with one, so I end up BSing about creative expression and my imagination.
Before I can graduate, I'll have to do a gallery show on campus, and it'll have to have an artist's statement.
"Kirby is cute - EMBRACE HIM"
I dunno how many people I can scare with that one...
For some, a statement is BS. To others, there's a good amount of thought behind what it is they do. To others, they can be all overly analytical about their work after doing it and pyscho-analyze the reasons for making something, but before making it and during, didn't have an 'intent' in their head.
That is the greatest paintings ever!! hahah i would love to but that I'm OK one!! hahah :D
Is it all art-ed up?? i mean like will they last? or did you just stick some paint on a peice of cardboard?
cause really I'm ok would rawk in my house!
Its paint on canvas. I don't know how to "art it up" so it lasts.
I'm not an artist, I'm a drunk. :)
Nice stuff. I like "Perfect Citizen" the best.
That, sir, is sig-worthyQuote:

By any chance, would you say that your artwork is inspired in any way by the work of Ralph Steadman?Quote:

"i'm ok." is very touching, especially with the story behind it.
"filth" is one I can relate to, I think anyone who has ever lived in a major metropolitan area can. Is the city in question Baltimore?
"lies" is my favorite, by far. The smearing on the flag makes a statement and looks really cool. This is also not the kind of thing I expected from a guy whose avatars were so pro-American for weeks.
"use your fucking turn signal" should be on billboards all along I-5.
Overall, I like them. I'd really like if you could express your feelings through visuals only--no words. The words are vital in some, but needless in others. There is so much that can be done with Ronald Reagan through pictures; even something as simple as a pair of horns jutting from his forehead gets the point across.
I'd like to see more, 88.

Philadelphia actually... I was there for a year, and it sucked.Quote:

I love my country... doesn't mean I have to love our government. ;)Quote:

this stuff is great, I love it. anyway I could buy glossies or something?
These are interesting. I hate to be the only nay-sayer, but I don't really care for these...it's the style mostly. I find the images fairly basic, and the text fairly overt, and I don't feel those elements combined produce something greater than the sum of their parts.
It's hard to categorize, because it's abstract in some ways, and very literal in other ways. Given that, I think the most effective piece is "Excuse", in that the painting style, color choice, imagery, and text all work together and make you think about the piece instead of just spelling it out. The brush strokes on the cross fit it's form nicely, whereas in other pieces, there's often a unrefined stroke to account for a ground plane or something (which is all that needed since things aren't existing in rendered environments).
Hmm...the more I look at it, I really like the "excuse" piece. I'm pretty sure I know what you were going for with the message (based on the tone of the other pieces), but it's vague enough to be interepreted other ways, or with layers of meaning, which is a definite plus for "artsy" art. I don't think the other pieces really have that.
Thank you for the negative feedback. :)
If anyone else has negative feedback I really really want you to post it. Honestly.
nice job 88, i love the regan 1
I think it would be more effective to simply name the paintings "enemy" or "lies" or whatever, instead of writing them on the painting. It's more subtle that way, and you're not beating us over the head with your meaning.
Oh, and I like them.
I label EVERYTHING that I disagree with as being "evil" too. Life is much more fun when its viewed in black and white... :D
Anyways, great job, 88. If anything, you may be able to make some money if you threw some of your works on ebay. Keep up the good work. :)
Now, go make a "STFU Newbie!" painting...
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I'll see what I can do.Quote:

Hm. I like the first one best. Looks like trees that might be crosses. Reminds me of night, winter or water.
I don't care for any of the others but the Lies one, and not because of its message, but because the layout is nice as well as the style and color. The messages of all of them are way too obvious and cliche, with the exception of the first.
I do like the text effect on Filth. The text alone is good, but I guess that'd be pointless.
The turn signal one is amusing.
--Scourge .
Thank you. I honestly appreciate the feedback.
Hey 88, I dig these. I actually like the firts one the most. I don't know why, but probably because of the mystery to it. Perfect Citizen is cool also. I hope you post more up sometime soon. :D
They're amazing.
those are fucking excellent... ah inspiration, i'm off to do something arty myself now, keep up the good work! :)
Man, you are one fucked up bastard, 88.
As a fucked up bastard myself, I can appreciate it.
Surprisingly good.
Thanks guys. :)

Hey 88, how much would you charge for the cheer up and im ok pieces? And maybe the car one if it's not too pricey.
Every decision I have ever made im my life has been influenced by Steadman. For 88, here is a portrait of Hunter Thompson he did, I'm sure you have seen his work before:Quote:

That sounds very gay. I would never write crap like that. Art is art. There's no need to set and define your style like that.Quote:

The variations within each piece of artowrk varies slightly, you have a poorly worked compisition which features no elements or principles of fine art, and which demonstrate no outstanding qualities of expression or beauty. The words in the bottom right-hand corner are there because your poorly worked central art cannot accurately or forcefully be understood, or recognized to any degreee to properly portray your emotions or messahe. When I see your artwork, I see angst ridden slop in disgustingly horrendous pakcages that demonstrate the very principles you try to illustrate hate for. Maybe indiviidualizing any of them, or taking more time and effort in them would help to make their messages more meaningful. If you had any heart or real love for what you're speaking against, you would take a decent amount of time and try to make your artwork meaningful.
Thank you.
it's called graphic. His pieces are very graphic. Say it with me now...
I like art to be accessable... which is why I do not make any effort to use any of the formal training I have when I paint. Whether I am paint on canvas, or making pictures with your titles. Its heavy handed and obvious because there is enough stuff out there with "deep hidden meanings".Quote:

I would say I spent, at the most, 20 minutes on each one of these paintings... that was the point.
I do honestly appreciate your feedback. Thank you.
But if you look at the paintings there's definitely a consistency in style.
Art doesn't have to have pure rendering of forms with a heavy meaning crafted in a dooie meadow under a sicamoore tree swaying in the wind.
