Teen blinded when frog shot from potato gun

DALLAS - A teenager was blinded after being struck in the face with a frog shot from a so-called "potato gun."

Daniel Benjamin Berry, 17, received the injury after he looked down the barrel of the gun's PVC pipe barrel and was hit in the face by the frog.

"He is going to be blind in both eyes," Daniel's mother, Lisa Berry, said.

Potato guns are made of pipe with one end sealed. A potato is wedged into the open end and a flammable liquid put into a sealed chamber is ignited, launching the object.

Denton County Sheriff's Department spokesman Kevin Patton said the accident occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday when Daniel Berry joined a crowed of teenagers watching the gun be fired.

When it misfired, Daniel Berry looked down the barrel to see what was wrong when the gun went off, Patton said.

"He said it just went off. It was a misfire. It hit him square in the face," Lisa Berry said, adding that her son had broken bones in his face that would require surgery.

Patton said no charges would be filed.

"This is the first incident involving a potato gun that we have had to deal with," he said. "What are you going to do? This was an accident."

Lisa Berry said the accident ruined her son's career dreams.

"All he ever wanted to do was be an Air Force pilot," she said. "That isn't going to happen now."

If he's dumb enough to put a LIVE ANIMAL in a potato gun, then LOOK DOWN THE FUCKING BARREL BEFORE DISARMING said potato gun, then it's probably for the best that he went blind, because he sure as shit isn't competent enough to get behind an Air Force jet.

I've built several spud guns, and you would have to be a moron to look down into the barrel while its loaded. After a misfire, youre ALWAYS supposed to loosen the cap to release the propellant. What a moron.

By the way, why is it after a horrible injury or death, every kid was going to be a pilot or doctor or president? I wonder how many of these kids would just be a 7-11 clerk and their parents didn't realize it.

I feel badly that he's "BLIND" now...but if he was a idiotically cruel enough to shove a live frog into a "potato gun" and THEN put his face (HIS FACE) into the opening when it was about to fire, he deserved it. It's like "I dropped coffee I just ordered on my lap and it's HOT!?!? Now I'm going to sue." Not to mention, he was going to be an Air Force pilot? He probably would have crashed a couple of million dollar planes trying to be like Maverick in "Top Gun."

I knew some dumb people people who wanted to be Air Force pilots. One of them was so fat he'd have to lose 100 pounds to even fit in the cockpit, but he was serious when he said that's what he wanted to do.
