I've always liked shooters but i dont know something about Ikaruga has me wanting to play even more of them
and i ended up taking an old 19 inch tv i had and put it on its side now as part of my set up for tate supporting games (been playing Ikaruga like this)
and im wondering what PSX if any US shooters support tate mode
I think Raiden Project does.

Yeah, but it doesn't support Tate controls. A quick remedy is to play with an arcade stick rotated appropriately.

i suspect tate has to go for sony approval, but that's just a baseless theory based on my own paranoid delusions about the approval process (which is really weird.)
There are a few:
Raiden Project - Tate screen, but no Tate controls. But, it's not hard to hack a controller to get around this.
Namco Museum (all of them) - all the vert games in the support Tate, including Pac-Man. The relevant shooters are Dragon Spirit (5) and Xevious (2).
Xevious 3D/G - The old Xevii all support Tate
Galactic Attack (Saturn)
Gunbird 2 (DC)
Ikaruga (GC)
- all these have full tate support
ill have to look into Xevious 3D/G
and ofcourse the namco musuems
I have Galatic Attack on Saturn and i know that does
now i need to look for Gunbird 2 on DC let me guess its really really hard to find and expensive *L*
Am I better off playing in TATE on a 19" composite bubble tube or in letterbox on 27" component flatscreen?
Is the letterbox size bigger then your 19"? I've found that TATE seems to still be clearer even when using a smaller monitor (this could just be my eyes messing with me because of the sidebars), but I've never compared a flipped TV to a non-flipped TV. I'd say go with whichever one apears clearer.Quote:

and it looks like the length of the 19inch tv is the same as the height of the 27inch and yet for some reason it doesnt seem to display the same size i dont know like mech said maybe my eyes are lieing to me
but i hooked up the 19 inch and play it in tate *shrug*

Well, something else to consider in your tate vs bit letterbox debate is the resolution of both screens. Ikaruga is higher res in tate, whereas letter boxed 480p actually outputs the black bars as part of the signal which effectively reduces the resolution of the playing field.
Johnpv: The height of a 27" TV is an inch larger than the width of a 19". Good eye...
ahh true probably why you can see more of the playing field on the tated 19 inch
It doesn't matter how big your TV is... if you play in horizontal (non-TATE) mode, a portion of the top and bottom of the playfield is cropped out to accomodate your screen's orientation. Even if your TV happens to have over 320 lines of vertical res, the horizontal mode (and cosole's output) will still crop the game's screen in the process of converting a lower-res video output to a higher-res screen (or something like that, I'm not an electronic engineer).Quote:

However, some shooters have better horizontal modes than others. Strikers 1945 II (PS1) and Ikaruga (DC) look decent and are perfectly playable in horizontal/letterbox mode. Donpachi and Galactic Attack for Saturn (especially the latter) suck without TATE. DP's horizontal screen is merely a "squished" version of the original, which results in tons of ripples, and you can't even see half of the enemy ships in Galactic Attack due to the cropping (some of the game's special graphical effects can only be drawn in TATE mode, as well).
I'd say go with TATE mode. You'll be able to see the entire playfield, and thus possibly play better.
