I don't know either, in it's default setting I use a combination of the dpad and analog to control my boarder. How many of you have really fooled around with the board press and making some pretty good combos because of it?
Oh and I remember seeing from one of the trailers one of the new things added besides board presses and uber rails was stalls, any one know how to do this and if its worth big points?
D
Here's what I think is cool so far:
-When you use the boost you actually can see and feel the speed up in effects.
-The lighting is insane, especially in Metro City. The game does seem to slow down to 30fps or so in those parts.
-The freedom of the peaks is awesome.
-The tricks flow into each other much more smoothly. I started to do some rail ubers and its always fun when you can tie it into another trick.
-The recovery button is neat.
-Graphics are VERY nice. Smooth powdered snow and ice look convincingly good. Sun looks great too in various levels. Character models look much better too including the ones they reused from the Tricky characters like Brody, Luther, Marisol(my fave) and the like. I hope I can adjust their costumes though.
-Handplants and board presses are a great way to tie combos like manuals were in THPS.
-Music is a mixed bag but I'm sure I'll adjust. I haven't bought any songs but I love the X-Cutioners stuff, Chili Peppers remix and the Fatboy Slim songs.
Another awesome addition is the multiple level ubers. I'm always trying to get Super Ubers to the max level. It certainly makes the trick system more deep.
The announcer is pretty funny, not as eclectic as Rahzel but like a regular radio DJ. Kind of funny how they do the radio songs before they start by introducing them by the 'artists' as in some real radio stations.
One minus is that they didn't get Jim Rose for Psymon again and the voice acting isn't as prominent as it was in Tricky. I like Kaori's more grown up voice though and some characters remain like Biff Naked as Zoe, that DJ dude as Mack and stuff.
Because Bif Naked's music career is all washed up now, this is the only job she has anymore.Quote:

Played the game (Xbox rev) for a couple of hours now. 1st impression --damn, this game is unbelievably huge, almost to the point where it's intimidating. So many options, so many courses, so many events, so many challenges/unlockables -- this game could keep one busy for a VERY long time.
Gameplay is tight, and while I'm not especially proficient at all the techniques yet (need to work in those board presses), the controls haven't posed any problem at all.
As I've said before, EA takes its share of heat, but they manage to turn out some high-quality titles. Play the game for a bit and you will appreciate the enormous effort that went into the level design -- HUGE courses that seamless flow from one to another, with countless "lines" to identify or flat out create.
Impressive and fun so far.
Agreed. I also have to comment that the game is tougher than Tricky and possibly SSX. The AI is much quicker and the tricks seem to be less per trick when going for the medals. So far I've gotten mostly silver's in my first couple of tries.Quote:

The extras aren't as cool as Tricky with some trailers of NFL Street and FMV NFS Underground but there definitely will more more to unlock as you progress.
EA takes it's share of heat because it sucks, for the most part in it's decisions.
But EA Big makes some damn fine games, and is the only reason I bother to give EA's games a look, since an EA Big game hasn't dissapointed me yet. Well, and Need for Speed, as well, but that series is usually hit or miss.
I've noticed that the opposition now uses shortcuts in the races and actually suprised me in a race by making me finish third when I've gotten so used to winning first. I'm actually happy that it happened cause since the first one I've rarely been challenged in the races.
Also the extras might get unlocked. I can't remember where I read it but apparently some ea tester managed to create a combo from the very top of the mountain to the very end and I'd really love to see that and hope that its an unlockable feature.
D
That would surely destroy any sense of skill I thought I had with the game.Quote:

Doesn't UPS only deliver till like 5? ;)
I couldn't imagine keeping a combo going for close to half an hour. What if you go 20 minutes and fall? That would suck. Your hand would be hurting too that's for sure.
sl1p, i felt the same way the first time i played. it's like, so obviously better. they should've called it ssx2, but i suppose that would be confusing.
For some reason though, I don't know if it was just the camera perspective or what, the demo SSX3 had somewhat smoother/looser control.
At least Sl1p enjoys it heh.
Whats that supposed to mean? =O!!!
It means you made this month's EGM along with Kaneda. The VERY SAME ISSUE SSX3 was reviewed.
Congrats men(s).
...GUH!? Me and Kaneda are in EGM?Quote:

And yes, SSX3 does rule. I'm going through it with Griff right now. I totally love that kid X__X Hes way too awesome. Sorry Mac =X
You can rotate the board during grinds by pressing forward with the left analog. You can also rotate during grinds by pressing a direction on the dpad. Also, not being able to turn while charging jumps is what allows you to prewind.Quote:

Dammit! I KNEW something wasn't right. No wonder my "pre-winds" didn't seems to be doing much. Changing control config now...Quote:

the game's beautiful. I got it at EB hoping for nothing grandiose, (you know low expectations always do a great game better) and it's beyond what i thought it would be. One of the cleanest menu setup's i've seen in a long time. The tree's that pass you by while the disc loads is very appealing.
Overall a great game, but i'm curious to know which character everyone's started with.
Kaori of course! It was either her or Mac, since those were the two characters I used in SSX1 the most. Didn't play Tricky all that much so I'm sticking with the old favorites.
Griff! Hes so awesome. All he cares about is candy and chicks (When he crashes hes like "I hope Elise/Zoe/Elegra/Kaori didn't see that!")!
I used to use Kaori, but now since stats don't matter (everyone starts even) I use Elise.
Well, I held off buying until Sunday, when Toys'r'us does their buy 2 Xbox games get one free thing...
But...Elise will be my first character. She has been the past games as well...and I was even able to outscore my friends in trick runs with her, despiter her lower "trick" ability (her speed allows her to get some multiplyers the trick characters can't). I guess I just like a well-formed woman
Very surprised to see Kaori users [Jap fetish?]. She's been my favorite character since SSX... Even though they all start even, I got a better feel with her then the others. Moby looks cool, but he seems clunky.
Here here buddy! :DQuote:

Just kidding. Having never played an SSX title before, and only the PS2 demos that I have, I've only played as Elise. If I ever get the money to buy SSX3, I'll play as Elise first.
I love the game, but EA Big really dropped the ball by just making the left out characters simply "skins".
No incentive to buy them, no personality or voice anymore, and it sucks because I was really looking forward to having Marisol back.
Biggest dissapointment so far, I had expected with all the work put into this, they would make the returning characters actual CHARACTERS, and not just lame pallette swaps. It's like the ultimate tease, seeing Marisol there but remembering it's not even close to being the real one.
Thank god I kept Tricky, I'd really miss some of those characters.
I always thought the characters in SSX tried to be too extreme or underground... and ended up looking stupid. :yuck:
SSX Tricky is still an awesome awesome game and I really want to try out 3.
<-- Yeah, SSX3 dominated me.
I feel the same way too SXA, but with SSX3 it seems like they found a happy medium. For example, look at Elise now and during Tricky. It's extremely hard to even think about going backwards now.
I really want this game. I loved Trickey, and I'm sure I'll love this too.
That's too bad about the unlockable characters. I'll miss Eddie. :(
Undocumented feature: PS2 version does indeed have progressive scan support, despite no mention in the manual.
Hold X and Triangle as it boots up, the prompt will show up right after the loading snowflake disappears.
So who wants to play some SSX3 online?
XD!!!
I got my SOCOM headset handy for DA TRASH TALKS LOL~
*Edit*
Nevermind! That was terrible :p Single player for me!
i don't know if this has been answered yet, but you just use the digital pad to prewind in default mode.Quote:

Alot of the classic SSX elements just don't seem to be there... I for one miss Rahzel, the personalities the characters had, the interaction between the characters, and the damn skins piss me off to no extent in how lame that ended up being.
As a snowboarding game, it rocks, but as an SSX game, it just dosen't have that same flair that Tricky did.
I started with Kaori, and I'm sticking with her since the constant lines the characters toss out won't get to me so much since I don't know what she's saying. I only played a bit of Tricky, and settling down with this game has been a lot of fun.
You can still pre wind like ep mentioned in the default setting by using the dpad which is what i've always done cause you can still maneuvre with the analog to line up correctly while holding jump then pre wind using the dpad.
As for the uber rails fill up your meter and let loose with a grab button + boost, just like an uber trick.
D
Tis true about prewinding spins with the dpad, that's how I remember always doing it before too.
All you people talking about it not "feeling" like an SSX game, I wonder if we'll see a SSX3 Tricky a bit down the line with more character interactions, new characters not being palette swaps, and a bunch of DVD extras?
i would buy it.
http://www.amazing.com/kmennie/consumer_whore.gif
(but i'd only get it for rahzel and the dvd stuff. i didn't really like the character interaction added in tricky.)
I've seen similar complaints elsewhere in the thread, and it has occurred to me:Quote:

What the Hell is a "prewind?"
When you hold down the X button to jump, your character goes into a crouch, hold a direction on the dpad (default controls), then when you let go of the jump button you'll be spinning faster (quicker rotation on backflips, 360's, etc).Quote:

Oh. So it's pretty much essential for serious combo tricking. Cool.
Is this a new feature, or have I just not been "with it" while playing Tricky?
It was in Tricky too.
NOOB!

The exact reason why I'm not buying SSX3. I liked Tricky better than SSX2 so I'll wait for the inevitable update.Quote:

Yeah the prewind has always been there ever since the first one as well.
Has anyone else checked out the character profiles and what not. One of the sections lets you buy every other uber trick in the book and assign it to a a button which is pretty cool cause now you can have that move you always loved with the charater you love.
Good to know about the uber rails cause I thought you had to hold square as well, thanx for the clear up. How is the kid in the game btw, he reminds me so much of Outlaw Star (Hawkings).
D
Griff is a wuss.
now he's done it.
Nobody has any idea about the stalls in the game? I saw them mentioning it as a new feature along side the board presses and uber rails. Anybody?
Another thing I noticed is that you can hold out a uber trick for as long as you hold the grab down for bigger points. Not quite sure if that was in the last one but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed it if it was. I unlocked peak 2 yesterday and really love the rival challenges, It's a novel idea and adds a lot to the game.
D
Yeah I did the exact same thing. I did toy around with the other characters though before setting my sites on her. I love customizing her outfits as right now I have the all blue with red trim(sorta Pepsi'ish) and sunglasses.Quote:

I don't really like Griff all that much I prefer Mac and Griff's voice actor is kind of lame and is definitely a real kid.
I bought some uber's from the lodge and that just seals the deal on the awesome customizability. I want to give all the riders unique moves though so I'm going to try not to give them all the same stuff.
BTW thanks for the heads up on the progressive scan Remy, I just wish I had a tv to utilize it. PS2 version also has 16:9 ratio and animorphic screen types too which is cool along with Surround and DTS :D
I dunno I might have done them without noticing, how do they look and how do you perform them?Quote:

Psymon is one of the default playable characters.
He's not as great as he was in Tricky though.
Well I like him enough to use him as my first character.
D
He's the only one who's got a sence of style that I can dig. All the others are meh. Well, except Allegra. She seems to know what's up with the duds.
Well when I watched the trailer the stall seems to be any trick in the middle of a spin or flip and they seem to pause the trick only to continue it moments before landing.
D
I mean personality wise though. The guy in SSX3 does a good job trying to keep up with his old zany self but they should have kept Jim. I doubt he would be that expensive to get anyway.
Hmm, I do that all the time but I didn't know it was called this. I dunno I may be doing something else, got a link to the vid?Quote:

Personally I found the "OMG XTREME PERSONALITY" in Tricky to be lame and it felt like they were just trying to appeal to the "OMG YOUTH CULTURE!".
I prefer the personality in SSX3 at this point.
Strictly talking gameplay I'd have to say out of the three ssx3 is the best one of the bunch and gameplay is the most importants in my book. And quite frankly I don't mind the new personalities, I've never been big on big names in my anime and I certainly don't mind not having them in my games.

Don't get me wrong, I do love the game, and think it's miles better than any other snowboarding game, and it'll remain on top for awhile. But like someone else said, I wouldn't be surprised at all if SSX 3 Tricky or some such came out, and fixed some of the atmosphere complaints.
It better be a Greatest Hit title then :\Quote:

Its actually quite good but it's not as crisp, along with the voices, as in Tricky. It could be just my tv speakers though since they are nothing special.Quote:

So, I can set the soundtrack to exclude certain songs? That doesn't sound too bad.
I'll get the game reguardless, but excellent tunes helps a bunch.
Yeah, you just have to buy them. You get some for free as credits to racing certain events well enough but after those are gone you have to spend cash. The songs are growing on me but I haven't listened to all the tracks to their entirety yet.Quote:

I prefer the techno-funk of Tricky. Are there any songs that emulate that style? If not, I can see myself turning the volume down and blasting a stereo. :\
Yeah the Red Hot Chili Peppers remixed song 'Higher Ground' is on par with the Tricky song. Other good ones are the remixed N.E.R.D song 'Rock Star' and X-Ecutioners 'Like this' which I thought was the song they remixed of a Linkin Park/Static-X collaboration but it's not.Quote:

Peak 3 is pimp.
I haven't bought any of the extra stuff yet, I'm still working on getting all my attributes filled.
Free riding the entire mountain is way more fun than any single event imho.
Oh yeah?! Well, your humble opinion sucks moose nuts! :p
i'm pretty much exactly where Kidnemo is. peak 3, concentrating on attributes.
funny thing, i wound up clearing peak 2 after ony two races (and nothing else.) it seems that all you have to do is collect enough money.
Anyone got any platinums yet?
This game is a work of art, or something. I dunno, I lub it:)
I too, lub this game! Simply carving through the snow is fun in it's own right to me. I feel guilty when I'm playing Castlevania and I have urges to return to the slopes instead of kill more monsters... but I can't help it! This game is too much fun!
I've put both Castlevania and Crimson Skies on the backburner because of this game.Quote:

And oh, I've only put about an hour into CV, then went back to SSX 3 again.
Yeah, I hope there's nobody on the boards that's too core to play this game. I know at first I turned my nose at Tricky because of the XTREME! style, and anyone who feels they're too good for this game is missing out on some incredible stuff.Quote:

No platinums for me, highest I've got is gold.
I looked in the strategy guide and you can unlock A beaver, who rides on a log which I thought looked pretty cool.
I've got one Platinum, and I think it was on the big race from Peak 1 (the one where you go from the top of the mountain to the bottom).
I got to Peak 2, great stuff. I'm being more a completist than usual though with trying to get all gold and stuff in Peak one. Do you guys check your test messages? Its a cool way to find out where you stand on tracks and your records constantly get broken when other racers are there so its good to update yourself with the info. Other riders like Griff or Viggo also challenge you and make comments. :D
Lately I've been falling asleep at the wheel(or control pad) though due to an erratic sleeping schedule. I'll most definitely play alot more on the weekend.
Music is really good now that I've had a few listenings, don't remember the names of the tracks I played yesterday since they all sound like random letters thrown together but good stuff.
I just got a [SPOLIER]Ninja skin, and I bought a big cardboard box to ride on, but you can't use that with the skins.[/SPOILER].
Finishing the 30 minute run was a bitch, but I ended up getting silver on it.
I picked up this game yesterday after some inner debate (the original SSX didn't do a lot for me and I never played tricky but 3 just looked too damn cool) and I'm entirely glad I did.
Wow, it's a blast to play and mixed with the crazy amount of style and functionality in the characters, music (The Faint and Ima Robot!), and menus it's one of the best games I've played this year. I'm really surprised as to how well they managed to make the courses feel like one, gigantic mountain, the sense of scale is incredible.
My only complaint is really a nit-pick. The rock music is great but doesn't really work with the "interactive music" or whatever they call it. The music will be drawing me in and making it more intense and then I'll fall and suddenly the lyrics will cut out mid-line - it draws me right out of the game. With the dance tracks this works but with the rock music (which I prefer), it just sounds like the song is skipping or something. :(
Oh well, amaing game all around so far. Oh, and, I'm using Kaori and I just unlocked Peak 2 after an hour and a half of play last night.
Korly, you spelled Spoiler wrong...
So, any comments on which version is best? I'll be picking this up tonight and I'd like to get the best version.
I usually get the XBOX version of pan-platform games, but there have been rare cases when the Cube has turned a victory over the XBOX. Recomendation?
ps2 - better controls, decent online mode (much better if you know someone with the game)
xbox - slightly better graphics/load times/sound
don't get the cube version (though it does have the best load times.)
all three support progressive scan. i went with the ps2 version. no complaints.
epmode,
What's wrong with the cube version? Also, do you know if the Xbox version has custom soundtrack support?
if you don't have a choice, the cube version is fine, but it has the biggest control problems of the three, as its controller really isn't built for the game. there are even several missing tricks due to button limitations. the xbox controller doesn't cause as much grief, though it does take some getting used to.
due to the crazy on-the-fly audio mixing, the xbox version doesn't support custom soundtracks.
Crazy on-the-fly mixing is probably a lot better than a custom, anyway. :p
Hmmm. Well, as this game is all about control, I might have to depart from convention and get the PS2 version. That's what I got Tricky on, so it'll come with a bit a familiarity as well.
I'll decide after I've read some more opinions. Thanks, epmode.
Ok, my will is cracking here, just got a comparatively good paycheck, and ssx 3 gc is calling me, i think, since i liked tricky, i am going to break down and get it.
Why GC? Why not XBOX or PS2?
