Off and on for many years, I have built up different collections of games, then sold them off and started on something else. I wish I could just stop collecting, but I think it's a part of me. As a kid I collected sports cards, comics, Garbage Pail Kids, etc.
My question is what games do you guys collect? I know Werewolf has his Square and wolf collections. What about the rest of you? I need some inspiration.
Good games mostly.
I feel that just about any "collection" I would want has some games that aren't very good, or I'll never get around to playing because they have to much japanese text or whatever (El Dorado gate for example), but I get them just so I can "complete" the collection.
It just makes more sense for me to only buy games I want to play.
The only games I like to collect are NGPC games and Dreamcast games. Otherwise, I buy what I want to play.
Neo Geo (used to anyway), Shooters (good ones), good Saturn games/imports, and other utterly useless games :)
King of Fighters, Mega Man, Shooters, Saturn games, rare imports.
Mostly shooters now, I try to only pick up 2d games with some exceptions like Prime and probably SH3 and ZOE 2.
Rpgs.
Horror games :) And games that have Lance Henriksen voice acting :p
I bought the import Panzer Dragoon games after owning and playing the domestic ones with the thought "they'd be cool to have." Other than that I pretty much buy to play, although when I do buy I hate buying used and incomplete games. So I do like having a nice looking collection, but I don't try to collect specifically.
I promised way back when to post a pic of my Panzer Collection, but then some stuff happened and right now I'm living elsewhere - away from my Saturn and games. At some point I'll do it though.

I kinda collect NES games, but that only seems to spark up during the summer, when there are less NEW games to buy. Other than that I don't really collect any certain game. I buy lots of games, and tend to be drawn to the more obscure titles. But really I only collect NES titles, because the NES is so damn cool.
RPGs, like Lordmrw. I'm also starting to grab shooters and fighters, though I don't play either genre nearly enough. :/
Just good games, games that are worthy of being played. I lend them out to (some) friends, bring systems over to people's houses. Some day, my kids'll play these games (if they're into that sort of thing, I guess).

Oh I just randomly collect games I like. Every game just about I have, I like a lot, no exceptions... with the exception of sports games, but those don't count >.>
I collect mainly RPGs, but I'm getting into fighting games, and Schmups.
I don't collect games at all. I buy what I want to play. The problem with collections is that thay can be too dominating in a person's life, and can become transitional objects, that is fetiches, which has something to do with inadequate mothering. Allegedly.
I can't be bothered with the idea of trying to 'collect' any one specific type of game [for example: every KOF DC port]... It's a negative mindset and way too taxing. That also means I'm not going to hang onto 'this or that' DC game because shucks, I really should have at least 50 DC titles.
Buy what you truly want to play. It's the only thing that makes complete sense.
With that, I would like to round up the rest of Cave's games... And like I said, it's because I truly want to play all of them. [Well, I don't care about their one puzzle game. Just the shooters.]

What do you consider horror games, Despair? I have all the REs, SHs, DCs, and DMCs, as well as Fatal Frame and Eternal Darkness. Do you collect games with a horror setting that are not necessarily of the genre? Like Shadow Hearts?Quote:

i do not collect sports games.
I mostly concentrate on the Dreamcast stuff now. I ran out of US games I could buy, so now I'm buying random Japanese imports based on whether I like the cover art or not. :)
I also have a pretty healthy collection of US PS1 games.
Genesis games. I've had a terminator-like attitude in hunting down all the great titles for my favorite system. :)

Yoshi, that depends on the game, for example Fear Effect series mixes horror and action into one, and I liked them, and added to my collection.
Galerians series is also related to horror genre, so I got original game, and need to pick up Ash one of these days.
Run Like Hell is a action horror game, simular to Aliens.
Splatter House series is horror games. And so is Hunter the Reckoning. Even though the emphasis is on the action elements, horror elements are also present.
Right now I've got the import PS & PS2 itch. The number of awesome imports for those systems is truly scary and to acquire everything I'm looking for will require lotsa money.
EDIT - I'm also a huge shooter fan so obviously I'm always on the look out.
Dreamcast games (mostly import), Capcom fighters and SNK fighters ported to DC. I did however recently dump King of Fighters 2001 after hearing it wasn't so hot, but am eagerly awaiting KOF2002. :D
I try to get my hands on as many PS1 RPGs as possible.
I do pretty much the same thing you do Yoshi, I go nuts collecting certain things, be it NGPC games, or PSX RPGs, or DC games, Sega games, whatever, then sell it all, and find something else to collect :p Right now I'm constantly working on my one collection that I'm not going to sell, which is GBA games. IMO GBA SP is the best system ever, design wise and games wise (though DC still holds it's place in my heart as my favorite console perse, because of the memories it holds ;)). I'm also trying to play as many Atlus titles as I can whenever possible. Go to Atlus.com and click on GAMES, they've got quite a nice catalogue of games, almost all are very interesting :)

Yeah. I stopped "collecting" when I realized it was a destructive habit, taking too much time and thought. I had a long list of games I "had to have," but slowly I would knock games off that I didn't really want to play, and now I have a list of about 5 games to check out. It feels good. And in the meantime, I've sold a third of my games, with a quarter of the remainder to go. It's nice having money to spend on other, more useful things.Quote:

I don't really "collect" games. I buy what I'd like to play. A couple examples might be considered a small collection, though:
I have almost a complete American console Mega Man collection. The only ones I'm missing are X5, X6, Rockman & Forte, and that soccer game for SNES. I'd also like to get the SNES or PS1 version of X3 - the Saturn import sucks (SS X3 is the only Rockman game I have).
I also own every game released in the US with the Final Fantasy name except Origins, FFX, and FFLegend II.
i try to collect whatever i like, got all the megamans, most of the *cough* final fantasy series. However after ten, i'm not buying the sequal.
At one point I had a ludacris amount of games which were in my collection, but I got rid of 90% of them. Why, because I didn't play them. It doesn't seem logical for me to buy stuff anymore unless I'll play it.

I'll collect for any system. Mostly Japanese games, though. I only collect by system and region because I like the organized look they have when they're lined up on a bookshelf.
Meh...I go after fast paced action games, English or Japanese. I like to import fighting games like the Guilty Gear series or something like that...
...I don't have a specific favorite genre. I generally like a bit of everything, though I seem to have little time now to complete anything that consists of RPG caliber. ;)
Collections are fun but can seriously get out of hand.
I work with a guy, I think collecting games is getting in the way of his life. The guy has a disgusting large colelction of games for all platforms. 1000s, litterally. ALl of his dresser drawers are emptied out and filled with games, DVD racks upon DVD racks filled. Truely sick.
The worst part is that he doens't play nearly half of what he buys. He works 2 full time jobs to pay for everything, mooches off of his girlfriend and lives with her paying no rent, all of the money towards games. And recently, I actually looked at a pile of stuff he was picking up. Things such as Barbie for NES and SNES Porky Pig games were scattered through out. He just buys anything that he doesn't have.

i tend to go back and buy the import version of a game i really liked for my collection. i went back and bought the import suikoden 2 but i don't plan to buy the import suikoden 1 or 3. (i like them, just not quite *that* much.)
i have a large collection of saturn imports but that's not something i'd consider a "collection" because i just bought them to play. to me "collection" implies games you have around like as trophies or art or knicknacks.
i'm probably most obsessive about phantasy star.
after that probably persona, where i have every release in both regions, although my persona 1 import is "the best" and i'd like to get another copy. but i don't really mind having "the best" games in general, honestly. but that's kind of a special case.
i also bought rockman megaworld, then the euro megaman wilywars, and also rockman 1-3 on PS1 when they came out. don't have the famicom carts though, and my NES carts are bare. it just depends on what i think is cool or want.
Not many.. good ones I guess.. and PC games since you really can't sell them for much anything.
I collect used games that are under $20. That may be a little broad, that that accounts for about %98 of my gaming purchases over the last two years.
I don't have much of a collection. If I see a game I want, I buy it. I hardly sell games, but if I don't even touch it, I sell it. Such is the case for my N64.
I don't collect in general. I'm a couple games away from a complete "Tales of" collection, though, so I'll probably finish that off and get the new ones as they come. I just got Tales of Fandom, and now I need Narkiki Dungeons.

As for me, I'll get all the obscure stuff, be it games or systems. I'm not too terribly biased, but I do need to expand into RPG-dom. Speaking of obscure, I'll get PCBs that never made it stateside or those I enjoyed backin the day.

Lots of shooters! Actually, I have way, way too many of them now and I really need to stop buying them, sit down, and try to clear some.
At one point I was also trying to collect Mega Man games, but that idea kind of wore off, since I already had all the good ones and the newer ones weren't so good.
I like playing RPGs, but I absolutely do not "collect" them. I don't think I've ever played an RPG more than once, so as soon as I finish them they get sold before they clog up my shelf.
I try to have a respectable library for every system I own. If there was one genre I focused on more than others, its probably shooters. a mediocre shooter is still a fun game.
