Wow, this thread is spiraling out of control. :)
Napolm--- Do some research, change the avatar, and there is no way you need an H1.
So you've stressed repeatedly that you are spoiled, and now you turn around and talk about the value of a penny?Quote:

If anything I would be driving like the elderly because I don't want to fuck anything up. I know the value of MY pennies (I save all the money i get, for me a video game is a big purchase) but if my parents are willing to spend this kind of money on me im fine with it. I've never broken anything of mine taht I own (besides stuff like baseballs and mitts) and my parents know this
I know ALL about being poor. For christmas when I was 5 i mustve gotten about $10 worth of stuff or less. I grew up poor, but in 2nd grade I moved into a nice house (I dont want to say how much it cost because you would all say im "bragging") because my dad became a contractor, and since then we've been living nicer and nicer as he keeps goin bigger and bigger with his projects.
Again, I know the value of a pennie. I only buy something if I know I absolutely need it. I work at a shooting range on the weekend earning money pulling targets. I am lucky if my parents give me $5 to go to a local stop for some food with some friends. I currently have a little over $1500 of my OWN hard earned money collecting profits in a cash deposite in the bank, and have another $300 or so in my savings account.

Indeed.Quote:

It's really REALLY stupid to think that the bombing of Pearl Harbor has any link besides national manufacturer to my 2001 Honda Civic. It really is idiotic. Nothing more than an anti-American pushing his views in to a subject which has no basis for them.
You're allowed to be anti-American by all means, but that was really uncalled for and silly.
Sorry, I haven't changed my info since I rarely post here.
I was born in 1988 and am 15 years old.
Sorry, i approached the quuestion wrong, and i guess with my n00bish and you guys bein assholes and all, it didnt work out very well ;)
Well, Andrew, you can always counter by saying: put your "You're a Sap, Mr. Jap" stickers on your Ford, Chrysler (put productive Japanese-American citizens innocent of any crimes in internment camps just because of their race lately?), Chevrolet, Dodge (drop atomic bombs on major cities full of innocent civilians recently?), Pontiac, and, of course, Hummer. That's what gives me the jollies.
Good times indeed.
Go play in an alligator nest.Quote:

(I think that's a close as i can get to a "death wish" now without raising moderator ire... I would've said 'go play in traffic', but... fuck. That's the whole point of this discussion, isn't it? :D)
yes, but you don't have to buy the foreign sourced parts. you can either have your current one rebuilt, or purchase a remanufactured/new one from a parts store for far less money than you would pay at a dealership. i understand where you are coming from, but there are smart alternatives to dealership parts.Quote:

maybe not, but do you know anyone that buys alternators, starters, distributors, etc from the dealership?Quote:

it was rusty, but i see plenty of rusty american cars. i'm sure it wasn't properly maintained, and the car [honda civic] was from the UP of michigan, where almost every car is rusty. every engine should be able to tolerate the amount of horsepower it is producing.Quote:

Honestly, I think part of the reason some of those older Honda's and Toyota's ( the one's actually from Japan ) might last so long without major engine or tranny problems has something to do with A: Alot of them had standards, which are going to outlast your average automatic anyday of the week and B: The engines in them were like 90 horsepower, therefore there's less wear on the thing in general. How was the body? Christ, I've seen late 90's model Toyota's ( a T-100 ) with a rusthole right through the bumper. The thing wasn't even 5 years old. Since they've started building them here, I'm not sure if they still use the fairly crappy Japanese sheetmetal.
they were both built in germany, the VIN started with WUV. one was an 86 jetta, the other was an 84 audi quattro 4000.Quote:

Also Mercedes quality has had problems for years ( www.troublebenz.com www.mercedesproblems.com ), one of thier biggest problems is that they are very inefficient at building cars ( high number of employees vs. automobiles produced ).
i know several people who have owned several different types of 80s toyotas and hondas who have put well over 200k miles on their car without major work.Quote:

I once accidentaly dropped the tranny into reverse while doing 50mph, I thought for sure I'd at least lose that gear. Not only was the tranny intact, it went into an old S-10 that had been in a fire and rebuilt and was still running when I traded it in. My 17 year old Dakota ( which I bought for a grand, and it was used and abused ) ran until 145,000 miles, when it overheated ( my fault 'cause I never checked the thermostat, it was probably the goddamn original ) fried the motor and died on me. I just bought a '91 Dakota for $2100 with 109,000 miles on it, only this one was an old man's truck, and well maintaned - it purrs like a kitten. With the 3.9 V6 motor, it's not unheard of to get 200k out of it without a rebuild ( it's from the 318 / 360 family of engines, both proven designs ) and I'm not expecting any major problems. I also had a Chevy Corsica 4 cylinder automatic that I basically NEVER maintained, and the thing just kept going and going. It was running with 140,000 miles on it ( the engine seals were all gone, the coolant mixed with the gas and oil, yet it started, ran and even got good milage! ) when we donated it for a tax break.
yeah, some people are stupid. the nova/corolla is the same way. i don't understand how people think the DSM cars are japanese. the chassis is purely chrysler.Quote:

Also, the Chevy Prism vs Toyota Corolla example that Wildkat brought up is another good one. Consumer Reports ( an American organization ) actually rated the Chevy version lower, when it's THE SAME DAMN CAR!

True, but a Hummer may have easily rolled over on the embankment I had to drive off just to get off the road afterwards.Quote:

Anyway, the Volvo was totaled :( but it didn't take much damage apart from the lights and the cooling system. The parts for that model are just so hard to come by.
