The platformers that get LITTLE/NO respect
Hello, I'm new here to the TNL boards...
I like platformers, but I have never understood why some are practically worshipped while others are discarded without so much as a look.
Vexx is a great example of a more than ample platformer with a GREAT soundtrack, huge lush areas (see Xbox:), yet rarely scores higher than 6-7/10, yet it easily deserves a 9/10 IMO. Sad too, b/c I think far too many people actually (*gasp*) listen to what reviewers have to say (at least they listen TOO closely to what they say). That whole business with "the camera" got so blown out of kilter with each passing review you'd think the camera was constantly swirling around the character... even when Vexx is standing still. Seems to me, a lot of mags judge a game like Vexx initially depending on what the character "looks" like in screens beforehand, after that, the mind is made up that the game is "generic" long before they ever play it.
Then on the other side of the coin lies the Ratchet and Clanks, again an adequate platformer, but from the adulation it gets you'd think it was the first 3d platformer ever. Oh, you mean it has weapons? Guess that explains it... Best. Platformer. Ever.
