How do your "___" feel about you playing videogames?

Growing as a gamer had been tough. My parents absolutely hate videogames, more so my father. I grew up in a family that despised videogames, including relatives.

I was lucky enough to get an NES for christmas from my aunt, because my parents never would've bought me one. I was lucky enough to win my Genesis at a school raffle. :) All the games I played were borrowed from friends or ones that I bought from saving up my money for months.

Back then I was only allowed to play games for an hour a week. A WEEK!! Of course, that never really happend. I'd go to my friends house or play when he wasn't home. ;) Today, I can't play a game for 20 minutes without my parents nagging me.

Finally, I was old enough to get a job. I bought my first real computer and my first videogame system, the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast and the Internet eventually turned me into a collector. :)

Today, I still get remarks about me playing games. "Videogames are for kids, you are 20 years old." "Videogames are bad for you." "Videogames will get you no where." My parents also nearly sat me down for a talk when they saw the cover of one of my magazines, Devil May Cry. :bang:

How old are you? Hopefully you get to move out soon and then sink yourself into a wholesome stupor gaming excessively ;)

My girlfriend is um, rather cool about it actually. She sent me to E3 last year for my birthday! She doesn't mind my hobby, understands when my attention is focused (she'll walk in front of the tv during an rpg, not during a shooter, woo!), and she even plays a few (mostly puzzle games, but she beat Paper Mario before I did ;)).

My wife supports my habit, since she knows that it is one of my methods of stress relief. It makes me happy, and sometimes, she'll buy a game for me. Occasionally, she'll play along with me. We're both currently enjoying Typing of the Dead for Dreamcast.

She's been really great about it, considering that I have 2 shelves in the living room with nothing but game magazines and figures, and a few posters up near my computer desk. She knew that it ( gaming habit ) came along with the package when we first got together ( or rather, she noticed it a few weeks after ). I'm just always sure to never ignore her, and we have a great balance going on.

My wife is ok with me and DJ being gamers. While is isnt too much into games herself(she does love puzzle and card games), she wont mind watching me play horror or action games, or cheer for me and DJ when we play a fighting game.

Sure she gets upset when I spent time playing, instead of doing something that needs to be done, but thats why I try to have things done before starting gaming session.

My parent never bugged me about my gaming hobby.

I hear you. ;) I used to have alot of fun with the nes when I first got it, we were playing duck hunt for awhile and my dad was into it at the time. Then his interest died down and he felt I should start doing activities with other kids (which I did) but he still wanted me to just "give up my nintendo" becuase he didn't want me doing kiddie stuff as I grew older.

I told him off when I said that if I'm wasting time playing videogames, why the fuck are you watching movies? :lol:

he still gives me the silent treatment to this day...


When you live on your own, you can say thanks for your parents concerns, but at the same time, tell them to STFU as they no-longer have authority over what you do. :evil:

My parents never had a problem, even if they could never figure out why I would spend so much money on it.

They never really had any problems with violence or anything, even when I was a kid. Heck, my dad was the one who got me Wolfenstein 3D and Doom 2. The only time my parents really objected was when my mom was mad that I could play as the Germans in Red Baron.

My parent's don't like it too much either, and to me , they think that with time i'll stop, but i've been playing videogames all my life why should I stop now? :P

• Girlfriend: I have converted her to the hobby as well. She loves games, buys her own games, buys me games, and even has her own Dreamcast and GBA. :)

• Parents: They never minded. I am 27 years old and they still buy me games for my birthday and Xmas since they know it's really the only thing I want to receive. :)

• Sister: She likes games too. She has a GBA. :)

• Relatives: When I was growing up most of my mum's family would buy me a SMS/Genesis game for my b'day/xmas. In fact, one of my uncles was one of the people who first got me into gaming when I was really little. He had an Atari 2600 and he'd always take me to arcades when I was 5-8 years old. So, anyway, December was a videogame bonanza for me. :)

I have no complaints.
