I had mine cut out.
Nope, PERFECT teeth.
Top ones generally slide right out. Bottom ones usually require a lot more pulling and some drilling, especially if they're impacted. If you're awake during the procedure, you will feel your head torqued around all over the place, even if the novocaine does its job.
I was in a considerable (though bearable) amount of pain (while not medicated) for about a week, and my mouth didn't feel normal for a few months.
Getting all four out at once means you will have a tough time eating for a while, but I think it's better than having to go back for round two after you know what it's like.
Ok, I'm a wuss, but getting my wisom teeth, is one of the pre-determined events in my life I fear greatly.
I am 27 and I still have mine. Last time I heard from the dentist he said I may be able to keep 'em.
I hope so. Pain sucks. :(
My jaw managed to get broken when mine were removed so it sucked ass.
Lots of ass.
Had mine done a couple years ago. They wern't impacted but the dentist said they would be in the next few years. Considering I only had insurance for another 6 months I had it done early. They put me under so I don't remember anything but waking up all druged up and barly able to walk. I slept through most of that day and never really had any pain worse than a mildly sore tooth.
Its not that bad. I got the two on my left side pulled, still need the two on my right taken out. The doctor that did it is like, a teacher at the UCLA School of Dentistry, so I was in good hands. The procedure was fairly quick, and I felt fine in a few days. Felt like total shit the night of, though, especially after the Novocaine wore off - SERIOUS pain.
Some cool things:
01. I wasnt knocked out completely, but I was drugged. I think they gave me a morphine injection or something. I was awake during the operation, but I was like, on cloud nine. It was fucking great.
02. Vicodin, woo!
mine are starting to come in and I think they have enough room...I really hope so because I have heard it hurts really bad to have them pulled.
Yep I got mine done, I was drugged and when I woke up they gave me a Sprite!
Worse part is the lack of good food while your mouth heals, think lots of applesauce, and pudding, that was the worse part, but they gave me some horse size pain killers that made me have a very nice feeling...
Thank you for posting that Regus.
Got mine out after I had some sort of swelling in my cheek. Hurt like a bitch (it was basically a whole lot of pinching/scratching-type pain, not like you broke an arm or whatever), despite me being on the nitrous, so if you have the choice you may want to get put to sleep.
Tip: Try not to swallow any of the freezing agent they inject into your gums. That stuff makes you feel sick, and you don't wanna be throwing up when you've got tubes and knives and gaping bloody holes in your mouth from teeth that just got pulled. :chick:
So far my top left on is almost done (fully out, but needs to get a little bit more longer to match the others) and the one on the top right is just poking out on one side. So far its goin good, but i want them to get pulled so I can get the drugs, and possibly save them (like someone else said in the other thread) for a good time?
Ditto me. I had mine pulled back in 1999 - all four of them. They gave me choice between numbing my gums or just knocking me out flat for the operation - I choose the latter b/c a classmate of mine told me that the stuff they used to knock you out was fucking wicked! Twas! When they inject the needle that sent the stuff through my veins I started seeing all these pretty yellow insects like bulbs of light flying around in the air - then nothing. I took a nap for the whole surgery, twas great - I was still 'asleep' and under the influence immediatley after the operation so they had to strap me in a wheelchair and have some other guy along with my dad help me into the car.Quote:

Unfortunatley - I must have looked like a fool strapped in the passenger seat of the car - and I can only laugh in retrospect at what the other drivers at the stoplights thought when they saw my unnaturally positioned and drooling face against the window!!! LOL! "Mommy its a retard!" Oh well, fuck em, its not like I could be embarrased about it.
I do slightly remember getting back home and my dad had to help me from the car to the door because the stuff they give you is so powerful that you can't remember how to walk straight until it completely wears off. I slept on the couch for a long time into the night (and the surgery was in the morning) and woke up and immediately spat out alot of blood and rinsed my mouth out with water ALOT. Amazingly though I never felt any noticeable pain... for me wisdom tooth removal was more like an annoyance rather than a painful experience. I couldn't eat real foods for a couple days and had to subside on spoon-whipped ice cream, but I played alot of video games that weekend which was cool.
Depends on how they're growing really. Mine weren't affecting any of my other teeth and only needed to be pulled because they were getting cavities and would be a bitch to fix in the future. So I just got the novocaine and the dentist went it there with a wrench and pulled them out. Not as bad as most people say, but again, it depends on how they're growing and if other teeth/gums are in the way.
Generally, the best time to use painkilling drugs is when your mouth is in constant throbbing pain.Quote:

You people and your wussy gas and anaesthesia...I didn't have anything but novocaine.
I got mine done. The dentist wouldn't give me any options so I didn't even get drugged. Local anaesthetics only... and not enough of it either. He stuck a giant needle in my gums, which hurt plenty plenty much to begin with. But then when he sliced my gums open, that shit still hurt like a mofo. Bah.
Anyway, I only had 2 taken out. It took him 2 1/2 hours to do that as he cut each tooth into 6 pieces and then removed the pieces with pliers.
The worst part of the pain comes when the anaestehtics run out. Dang, that hurt. And a week of eating porridge and noodles.
Still the 2nd most painful experience of my life.
No fun at all, getting them pulled. They do everything short of slap you around while they're pulling your teeth out, too.
It helps to have a girlfriend who will put up with your medicated ass afterwards. :D
Remember: Getting put to sleep is for pussies and homeless pets. Ask for a local anesthetic!
you had a terrible shitty dentist - man - I was asleep during my surgery... whats up with your doc?Quote:

I was put to sleep during my surgery. I woke up 45 minutes to an hour later, and my wisdom teeth were gone. Then there's the vicodin... Make sure you crush it up and snort it off someone's ass. It won't work, otherwise.
Vicodin has no effect on me at all. Morphine, however, now THAT's the good stuff. I'm hoping I don't have to get my wisdom teeth pulled, as it sounds painful.
Yeah, my wisdom teeth weren't that big a deal. I was all kinds of drygged up. Just don't ever have to have an extra tooth removed from the roof of your mouth. THAT sucks, I know.
Well, it all depends on if they're coming in straight and just take up too much room in your mouth or if they're coming in crooked, and if so, how badly crooked thay are. It also depends if they've broken through the skin yet or not. I had all 4 out last year (three were impacted, one VERY much so), and man, it was not fun, but not horrible, either. Mine had come through the skin, but at really weird angles. I stayed awake for the whole thing- I have a thing about being put asleep. I just had a shitload of novicane. Two of the teeth just popped right out (top and bottom right)- I was amazing by how quick and easy it was. But then the other two...oh, man. One (bottom left) the doctor had to drill into sections and remove piece by piece, because he couldn't pull it out. That sucked. The other one (top left) required some drilling as well, but it wasn't as bad. But that one tooth took forever. The whole thing took just under an hour. If none of your teeth give the doctor any problems, you'll be out faster. The doctor will then stitch up your bottom gums (stitches out in a week), but usually not your top, since the way your mouth is shaped it naturally pushes the top holes where your top wisdom teeth used to be closed. You'll be given a perscription for an antiboitic and a painkiller (usually hydrocodone or oxycodone), stuff your mouth with gauze, and sent home. You'll have to change the gauze in your mouth every half-hour or so, to soak up the blood. And you'll want to put in that perscription ASAP, unless the doctor hooks you up on the spot (some dentists can do that). You'll also have to start icing your face constantly for the first 24 hours to prevent some of the swelling, but no matter what you do your face will probably blow up like a balloon. That was the worst part for me. It took me about 2-3 weeks before my face returned to it's original shape- until then, I kinda wanted to avoid the public eye, since it looked like I was chewing on a golf ball (the side with the problem tooth was swollen much worse than the other). Nothing but soft and mushy food for a few days, and you'll have to rinse your mouth constantly with warm salt water because you can't brush, and since you don't want food trapped in the healing wounds, because that could cause an abcess (the wound heals with food stuck inside, and it gets infected). Rinsing with salt water also helps the swelling. However, you can't start the rinsing for the first 24 hours (no spitting allowed)- just use ice. After 24 hours, the ice won't do much good anymore, so you can start rinsing. Don't use straws to drink, as sucking on a straw creates suction in your mouth that can cause your wounds to bleed. Don't excercise for a few days, since the increased blood flow may interfere with your wounds healing also. Also, no brushing your teeth for a few days, either. Basically, you'll probably feel like crap right afterwards if it's a difficult surgery, but I delt with it fine. The surgery itself sucked, but I recovered very quickly and pain wasn't a problem. Some people say the painkillers knocked them totally out, but they didn't do a thing to me- I suppose I have a high resistance to that stuff. I was up and around and doing stuff in no time, though the swelling DID piss me off. However, you're smart for getting all 4 out at once like I did- no sense in drawing it out. Good luck and let us know how it went!Quote:

I had all 4 of mine pulled out at once...all I remember was getting those hurtful metal props put in my mouth, breathing in that lovely fuzzy gas and then...he's done and I have a mouth full of stitches. The only two pieces of advice I can give you is (1) make sure you breathe in real deep...because I don't think you want to wake up when he's opening your gums and hacking away at your back teeth (YOWCH), and don't mess with the stitches (it's real tempting). If you do, you'll have holes back there for a while.
Dole has a good explanation.
I was bleeding like a stuck pig. Man, I used an ASSLOAD of guaze. Also, my painkiller wore off right after I woke up the next day after the surgery. The pain was INCREDIBLE.
Also, according to my wife, I was so out of it, I was singing Christmas carols in the waiting room.
Had 'em pulled when I was 15 or 16. Getting drugged up was fun, as was spitting blood. Didn't hurt that much at all, plus I got days off school. The worst thing for me was how food gets stuck in the holes, and this weird meaty taste I got whenever I touched the holes with my tongue.
Well I was with my mother visting the Dentist talking about the procedure and I had two options.
1. local anesthetic
or
2. I getting knocked out with gas
Since 1 was the cheaper option that was the one I got. The most painful part was when they injected the anesthetic with the huge needle into my gums. And since the area where they inject the SIX shot was by a nerve I sometimes felt an electric shock. After that they procedure took about an hour to slice open the gums and take them out. Afterwards they stuffed tons of guase in my mouth and I went home to eat some mash potatoes and take a nap for about four hours and after that while my mouth still was kinda sore I felt good as new and even went out that same night. So in the end it was slight discomfort but nothing too bad at all.
I've had mine pulled (all four at once, thank goodness) and it's not much fun. What did I say when I realized the time had come to get mine pulled? Try "Oh shit".
I was knocked out totally for the operation, so I don't remember jack of it. The anesthesiologist oversedated me prior to the operation- when I came to I was in a condition like station82o. My vision was so blurred I was seeing multiple images. I was rolled out in a wheelchair with my mouth full of cotton and the taste of blood. Although I had gone in the morning, I didn't head home until about 7PM.
The doctor prescribed Vicodin; while the pain was pretty bad, it never caused me to resort to using the pills. I took nothing but good old Tylenol.
After the operation, I could eat only pudding, applesauce, and similar fare for a little while.
My condolences to 88 on needing his jaw broken for his operation... fuck, that's got to hurt. Going through a standard wisdom tooth removal procedure is enough of a bitch on its own.
Here's hoping it goes well, 7F. Good luck, and hang in there.
Oh, and I got mine pulled about a 1 1/2 years ago.
Just got back from my Wisdom Teeth Adventure. All four of mine had to go, 2 in the bottom came in, but one started to decay, so I opted to get them ALL out at once. The top two were impacted, but the dentist said I'd be one of his easiest cases. My face is numb and I talk like I'm handicapped, but the vicoden is keeping me from feelin it.
27 and have grown in nicely, NO ROT!!
(ok flame me)
They gave me mine, the one that had started to decay looked pretty gnarly.
I keep mine on my desk.
That's awesome.Quote:

I keep mine in my sock drawer.
Each one is broken into about 10,000 pieces because the cat that took them out was an inept jackhole.
If your pain runs out before your drugs do please hook me up.Quote:
