Kunoichi // Nightshade

Sega recently announced Kunoichi for PS2.

Games_are_fun have just confirmed that the game is being developed by Overworks; the developers of the brilliant PS2 incarnation of Shinobi!

Here is the description of the game from Sega PR:

· "Kunoichi (working title)" (PlayStation 2): A rift to the demon realm has placed Tokyo in great peril. As Kunoichi, a deadly female ninja, you are charged with the task of collecting the scattered pieces of a legendary weapon while dispatching a relentless army of powerful demonic foes. [This title is not yet concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America]

It may or may not be related to Shinobi, but the description sounds interesting (if vague) and the fact that Overworks is the developer has rocketed this game to the top of my most interested list. I can't wait for more info at E3! :)

Being a huge ninja game fan, I can't wait for this. I hope it isn't too similar to PS2 Shinobi since that game will likely get a sequel anyway.

Sounds cool, doubt it's related to Shinobi, but I'm an idiot. This years E3 is going to fucking own all.

Concept sounds cut and paste from the description for O-ti-gi, only with a swapped gender. I like Overworks, but I'll wait for some screens before getting excited.

Sounds good to me. "Kunoichi" is a term for a female ninja. "Shinobi" is another word for "ninja." I'm almost positive this is a sequel to the PS2 Shinobi. :)

Female character + ninjas + solid fighting engine = :D

It's an action game so the story/plot is not that important. The setting is.... and the setting sounds good to me. Besides Shinobi itself had a fine story, so Overworks has shown they can provide a decent enough story as a backdrop to their incredible ninja action gameplay. ;)

Shinobi Ending Spoiler: For those who completed Shinobi - the game did not exactly leave itself open to a direct sequel, eh? After you defeat Hiruko, the entire complex collapses and you are led to believe that Hotsuma went down with it. His mission was complete.

I really like how - like a great movie - they left it open to interpretation though. Maybe he lived. Or maybe he died. In the terms of the plot it didn't really matter. So... Perhaps Hotsuma's fate is a part of the plot for Kunoichi? Perhaps the game is simply set in the same world? Perhaps Kunoichi and Shinobi II are different games set in the same world? Perhaps "Kunoichi" is Oboro? :sweat:

I guess we'll find out. :)

I loved Shinobi, so I expect this to rather fantastic as well. But I think this might indeed be the sequal to Shinobi, but with a name change and character change. But I don't think a character change is going to improve the sales or anything. I just don't think people liked the game play all that much. I imagine more than just the character will be changed. Sega is Sega, I imagine it will be great.

I'm hoping it's a Ninja Princess sequel but the odds of that are extremely slim.

I thoughtJoe Musashi's clan WAS the Oboro clan and the Oboro were pretty much wiped out. I don't know if Overworks would give us two ninja games but as long as Joe is still a playable secret character I'll be happy. Hell I'll buy these games anyway.

Sounds like a good game. I loved Shinobi for the style and the challenge. Whether this is related to Shinobi or not. I'll probably get it.

Well, like I said above... considering the fate of Hotsuma, it's not surprising that the sequel is not a direct one...

I wonder if it will deal with the plot if Shinobi at all. That will be most interesting.

I wonder if the game will have a subtitle with the word "Shinobi" in it.... I think it would make sense because of the recognition and legendary reputation of the Shinobi series (the classic games as well as the neo-classic PS2 game, which did pretty well and had a high profile).

I also wonder what the plot of the Shinobi movie will reflect.... if that project ever seems the light of day anyway.

I've always liked Sega's character designs...

What a wonderful pic to show, Sega.

I think those pics look great. I can't wait to see bigger/cleaner ones... not to mention some gameplay. This is now officially my #1 most anticipated game. These screens have the same style of the original Shinobi (PS2), yet they are unique enough to make me very curious about the nature of the plot to this new game.

I also don't think that the boobers are gratuitous, tho'... they're not gigantic or exposed or anything. That first screen is a bit of a funny pose... but I think her character design is pretty solid. It looks like it fits well into the Shinobi universe.

I passed on Shinobi with some regret and don't feel like hunting down a JPS2 copy of it so I'll hope this will be a greatly improved version of that experience.

Games_are_fun has new info... and it turns out Kunoichi is NOT Shinobi II afterall.. it's a spin-off. Hopefully that means Shinobi II is still possible.

The only think that sucks is that they are going to make it easier than Shinobi. One of the best things about Shinobi was that the game was challenging - yet very very fair because the gameplay was so tight/solid.

Hopefully there will be different difficulty levels for non-wussies. :p

Sggg, Sega has said they're working on Shinobi 2, and that'll it'll play differently. I'm sure they wanted to get the most out of the Shinobi engine so they came up with this game.

Yeh, you're surely right... I am just speculating/hoping that they can still make a true sequel one day. Maybe not story-wise... but gameplay wise.

Who knows though, maybe I'll like Kunoichi even more than the great Shinobi. ;)

At least they mentioned TATE will still be in the new game. :)

Very interesting. I have some concern about the gameplay, but it honestly sounds great. I am just concerned because Shinobi's gameplay was so tight and so perfect. But by the same logic there is every reason to believe Overworks can do it again! ;)

'Shadow Dance' makes me wish she had a pet wolf. Oh well, maybe they can do that for the next game in this series.

I'd be excited about this game if it wasn't still pretty far off.

All they have to do for Shinobi is make the backgrounds more varied, add crazier graphics, and add more Shinobi stuff. Throw in fushin, mijin, and some new ninja magic. Add the old school Shinobi elements like horseback riding fight scenes, surfing, fighting on a train against spiderman and batman.Cool stuff like that. The game would be the perfect action game.

PS. Every Shinobi games last stage should be the maze with the revolving doors and crazy ninja's.

I think they just tried to get the engine down. The producer did say that he wanted to make it more varied but the engine/play mechanics is the most important. So I think he just based it off Shinobi one. I think they did a great job. They could have added Shinobi 1's bonus first person ninja star bonus stages atleast though.

All overworks has to do is add more variety for the sequel and it'll be crazy. I just hope they don't throw out the entire shinobi 1 engine for shinobi 2. If they make it more like Rygar and DMC, then it might not be as good as Kunoichi and Shinobi PS2.

Sega has stated that the game will appear in Japan within the current financial year, which means sometime between now and March of 2004.

i'm typically ambivalent toward sexy-lady character models, but that render is ultra-stylish. i love the fishnet. too bad the in-game model's textures aren't sharp enough to do it justice. /graphic_whore

Supposedly they are making the game easier this time, which I think is a shame. I hope they don't dumb it down too much because the difficulty in Shinobi was spot-on perfect for me. I liked the pits and the no checkpoints. I appreciate a good old school type challenge.

You know what. I don't mind bottomless pits just as long as you aren't forced to restart just for making a miscalculated jump, which is my gripe. If a ninja can fight undead warriors and use magic spells, then he has no excuse for not surviving long fall.

I love the character design. I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I still really hope it isn't too similar to PS2 Shinobi although it looks like it will be judging from the screenshots.

I'm not too worried about it being too easy, just set it on hard. Graphics look very nice, especially that cutscene. And is that guy playing the game in widescreen? Widescreen mode would be cool.

That's a widescreen TV and the game is being played in widescreen but it doesn't support that mode.

What do I mean? Look at how squashed she is and the freakish angle of the background.

Those are some sweet screens. That kunoichi chick (anyone know what her actual name is?) is pretty hot. I love the character design. Plenty of opportunity to go completely over the top with it but the design is actually really stylish. Love the fishnet and the mask. Very sleek.

I've never played Shinobi (loved watching it though). I found the difficulty level a little daunting. Those bottomless pits and crazy evil possessed dogs were freaky. But if Kunoichi is supposed to be somewhat less challenging, perhaps I'll give it a try.

Uhhh, weren't you one of the people to complain about the Ninja Gaiden screens? Because after NG, this game looks very underwhelming. Not to mention they should be slapping a 'mature' rating over her skin tight outfit...

It'll probably look fine in motion, but right now I'm personally disappointed. The visual appeal of the game... well, there isn't any for me. She may be sexy, but those low rez textures and boxy backgrounds are a definite turn off.

I sure was. It's funny you should mention that, because when I first saw these screens I used the very same example when showing them to icepop. Technologically speaking, this game is not going to win any awards. But like Shinobi it has oodles of style and personality and these first in-game screenshots give a good hint that the gameplay should be up to Shinobi's impossibly high standards as well. That's all I expect out of games. Gameplay + Style = Fun. :)

You must have been looking at it pretty closely to notice. Since it's black I really couldn't tell how tight it was. At least it's still attempting to serve the purpose of a ninja and be somewhat able to fade into the background. I think miss crotch medallion here would only fade into the background of a cosplay AV audition. :o :eek:

The difference is Ryu looks human. Look at gymnasts in real life, both male and female, and they're just as muscular as he is. All you know about Hibana so far is it's a good thing she's not real because she'd either die of embarrassment of skin suffocation in that suit.

Die of embarassment? Possibly. Alot of these video game costumes look pretty hilarious when made into real costumes. Skin suffocation, though? Nah. To use your example, gymnasts wear clothing just as tight. And Ryu's clothes are equally tight. Honestly, Hibana looks just as human to me. From the pictures I've seen neither male or female gymnasts are as jacked as Ryu. The men are close, but not quite that huge. The women seem to have a physique very similar to Hibana's as well.

Man, did you just say "crotch medalion?!" That's some funny stuff. :lol:

Ammadeau, arn't you the one who draws coutles pictures of Morrigan from darkstalkers? A character that has the most impracticle fighting outfit in the history of time, and looks about 300 times worse than Hibana.

And I agree with SGGG on Ryu, he looks out of place. Why can't he just wear his old cloth Ninja outfit rather than that Motorcycle get up?

Looks pretty much like Shinobi, but with breasts. Still, more Shinobi is a good thing.

Well, Shinobi wouldnt have been all that difficulty, if not for those damned botomless pits and lack of mid level check points.

Habina sporting rather cool look, and even got her own version of fancy scarf :lol:

I think this will be a fun game, my only hope that the camera is little bit faster than it was in Shinobi.

You forget its Team Ninja making this game. He'll have a hundred costumes to unlock or something. You haven't lived until you've done ninja stealth kills dressed as a pirate, complete with fake parrot that has twenty recorded catch phrases... which they'll later sell on Tecmo's website. :chick: (has to fill in for the lack of a parrot smily)

I actually agree the NG design is weak, his DOA2 outfit was much better, but Hibana's outfit looks sillier... if more stylish. I just wish this game wasn't on the PS2 because after playing through Otogi the graphics just look third rate to me.

I know that this game is going to be fun, because I had a great time with Shinobi, but this is looking pretty ugly so far. Didn't they brag about how the game wouldn't be so flat or bland as Shnobi? I'll reserve judgement untill we see more, but so far, all I'm seeing is a lot of concrete. Oh, look some metal boxes! Just what a cutting edge ninja game needs.

While I'm bitching, it also looks like they are moving away from the supernatural enemies of Shinobi to more robotic baddies. Atmosphere -100. :(

Dude, come on. That thing was easy. Even with my weaksauce skills. Getting to him, however... was a friggen pain.

I really love Shinobi, and cant wait for more, even if it doesnt look any better.

I thought he was one of the easiest bosses in the entire game. I took him out on my first attempt. He's also one of the easiest bosses to TATE. Just kill the spiders, jump, dash, attack, win. ;)

All I care about is if I can play through this game as Hotsuma on the 2nd playthrough.

Well, not really, but I really hope there's something like that. My renewed interest in Shinobi PS2 gives me high hopes for this game as well.

Uhh... is this a PSX game? Look at the polys in that screenshot. I know it's a still frame of an explosion, but still... bleh.

Depending on when it comes out in Japan, I still might buy it. If it's too close to Ninja Gaiden though, I doubt I'll touch it until it hits budget status.
