I realize that the GBA has a much stronger lineup than its predecessors. However, there were certainly a handful of excellent games on the GB and GBC. Which do you consider the must-haves for the 8-bit 'Boys?

Oracle of Ages and Seasons, is a great start.
Mario Golf
Definately Metroid II, Tetris, Super Mario Bros. DX, and Gargoyle's Quest, IMHO.
Some good ones:
Bionic Commando
Dragon Warrior I & II
Dragon Warrior III
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages/Seasons
Metal Gear Solid
Metroid 2: Return of Samus
Mario Bros. Deluxe
Mario Land 1, 2, 3
Bionic Commando.
That was a new game and not a port, correct?Quote:

TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan
Final Fantasy Adventure
batman.
Donkey Kong
Tetris Attack/Pokemon Puzzle Challenge
Ghosts N Goblins
Survival Kids was an awesome alternative RPG.
I always liked TMNT: Fall of The Foot Clan.
Motocross Madness was the shit.
Links Awakening is the best GB game if you ask me. Its my third favorite Zelda game (Past, Wind Waker, Awakening). Other than that I don't really know. I have not really played a lot of them, Kirbys Pinball is fantastic though.
Apart from the Pokemon games, Mario Land and Links Awakening, I don't think there are any 'must-have' Game Boy games that are exclusive to the format. Despite it being over a decade old, I think it has one of the worst selection of games ever. Upsetting that the Wonderswan and NGPC got crushed by such a piss poor system :/

Wario Land II
Tetris Attack
'nuff said.
Some of the older Mega Man games.
ahem... batman.
Yeah but Minna no Golf 3 and Mario Golf 64 exist...
'Must have' to me means exclusive and one of the best examples in the genre but whatever. I certainly wouldn't consider the Game Boy versions of DW, FF, SMB etc.
At the time that game was fucking incredible. You just weren't cool if you didn't have this.Quote:

I'm not sure how exactly it stacks up in this day and age, but I think it's definetly worth checking out for nostalgia's sake.
P.S: Get Metal Gear Solid.
I think you need to play Mario Golf.Quote:

It's more than just plain golf. It's a Golf RPG.
Has a ton of cool ideas, gameplay, minigames, bosses, boosting your stats, getting new clubs...
Just a really cool game that is just as good (if not better) than MG64 or Hot Shots3.
*edit*
I still have a soft spot for Fall of the Foot Clan. That was the first game I ever discovered a "secret code" for. It was stage select or something. I got it printed in Game Players back in the day and a few other mags.
Ninja Gaiden Shadow.
Wario Land 2 and 3
Donkey Kong
Metal Gear Solid
Zelda: DX
You needthose. I'm alsofond of Final Fantasy Adventure.
Don't laugh.
The Little Mermaid.
Great Capcom platformer.
I think all the must haves are named all ready.
The ol Gameboy was never really that great compared to Nes/SNES.
GBA on the other hand already has more must haves than Gameboy/Color combined.
Donkey Kong 94
Zelda DX
Tetris Attack

Dragon Warrior 3 actually recieved graphic upgrades, from the NES version.
Mario Tennis is one of the best sports games I've ever played, and this is from someone who hates sports games.
It's got a sweet RPGish mode. I think it's actually more fun than the N64 game.
Megaman Xtreme is a fun game, but you don't really need it with Megman Zero being out.
I love me some R-Type DX too.
After playing Picture Puzzle on the NGPC, I've really wanted Mario's Picross. Haven't gotten it yet.
Mario Golf is by the same developer, and has the style rpg-style gameplay.Quote:

Donkey Kong 94
Kirbys Dream Land II
Kirbys Star Stacker
Tetris DX
I bet I can come up with more X_X
Castlevania for GB was pretty sweet
Except for the first one, the Castlevanias were really nice, great music too, for the GB.
Gargoyle's Quest is very good. Kirby's Pinball is classic. Final Fantasy Adventure is good.
I haven't played it, but Shantae on GBC is supposed very well done.
Castlevania Legends seems like poo to me, but Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge has some of the best music EVAR and is pretty fun. Castlevania Adventure has great music too, but don't play it unless you're incapable of frustration. Revenge of the Gator is great, and I think it was HAL's first pinball game. Toki Tori is great great great great fun, and most of the time it seems like a GBA game, it looks so nice. Nemesis isn't the best Gradius out there, but it's pretty decent.
Final Fantasy Legend II is very good... III isn't quite as good, but still fun
YES! You are right on the money man.Quote:

Wendy Every Witch Way
Mario Golf & Tennis (needs to be said again)
Nail N' Scale
Bubble Bobble 2/Junior
Mercenary Force
Toki Tori
Kwirk
Daruman Busters
Namco Gallery 1-3
Kirby's tilt & tumble
trax
B-A-M: millenium
Turrican

lode runner
boxxle
Crystal Quest
burning paper
flappy special
Castle quest

Kid Dracula
Adventures of Lolo
Mario's Picross
mole mania
Ultima Runes of virtue 2
Snow Bros Jr.
Tumble Pop
Ultraman Ball
Wario Blast
Qix Adventure
Monster Rancher Explorer
Bomb Jack
Survival Kids
Thats all I can think of now :)
I'm another supporter of the first two Castlevania Adventures on GB.
I can't believe nobody's said Crystalis yet.
Portable R-Type (for those who don't own a Turbo Express or Master Geared Game Gear) is sweet too.
The first GB Gradius was well done.
Nobunaga's Ambition, baby!
How nobody's mentioned Operation C is beyond me.
Bonk's Adventure/Revenge, anyone?
Faceball 2000 - the original LAN fps!
Heiankyo Alien, for its pure unabashed weirdness.
Kid Icarus. Duh.
Tecmo Bowl - yeeyuh!
Nekketsu Koukou soccer bu (I forget the english name - world soccer fest or something)
Adventures of Lolo - a perfect portable game.
Tetris Attack - portable version of one of the best puzzlers ever.
Blaster Master: The Enemy Below!! Blaster Master rocks.
Daikatana - never played it, but there must be some comedic value there somewhere. I've heard it's actually better than the PC version - more of a Zelda/Metal Gear affair.
Shadowgate Classic/Returns - my favourite series of point & click puzzle solvers.
Klax - another personal favourite in the puzzle genre.
Magical Drop - who doesn't love Magical drop?
I'm sure there's tons more I didn't mention. I'm not a huge Game Boy fan or anything, but there was definitely a ton of great stuff over the years for fans of 8-bit games. While better versions of some of those games may exist on consoles, 1. - alot of them are on NES, and therefore not exactly reliable, and 2. - these are all portable.
The one. The only. Tetris the original one that came bundled with the old gameboy. Screw the updated DX and Attack versions. Tetris baby all the way.
oh, and quarth. great little puzzle shooter.
Mario Golf is a simply fantastic game. That, tetris, and Advance Wars are probably my most played handheld games of all time. I really liked Zelda DX as well. Donkey Kong is supposed to be really good but i've never gotten around to picking up a copy myself.
I concur. Portable Shadowgate is awesome, Deja Vu isn't as hot though.Quote:

Furthermore, Qix is a great, although mind numbing puzzle game. The best thing about this one is that you get to see Mario as a Mexican!
yes. I love this game.Quote:
Ultraman Ball
. . .
that's all I'm contributing~
Tetris Attack has almost nothing to do with the original Tetris.Quote:

Y'know.
I bought it when it came out. Maybe two days after it was released. I didn't know a whole hell of a lot about it other than the cartoon caused little japanese kids to have seizures.
So I bought it, played it, and it was a really good game. I liked it a lot. Buddy of mine got a copy and we played it quite a bit.
Then the cartoon came out. Then the toys. Then the card game. Then the tennis shoes. Then it was everywhere and it made me sick. I can no longer even look at it, even though I have a saved game with some high level characters that I thought were pretty cool.
What was once a fairly great game, is now a joke.
In 20 years, when the craze has died down and people begin to forget. Try Pokemon. It's a fun game.
Double Dragon II is pretty damn good.
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Tetris
Mario Land (any)
Super Mario Bros.
the Dragon Warrior games
That's because the GBC version was made by whitey and sucks.Quote:

Or at least, it's worse than the NES game. Lower res, seriously yucky art makeover.
Dude! The Wonderswan was an even more piss-poor system than the original Game Boy. The only people that supported that system were stubborn anti-Nintendo companies than anyone else.Quote:

Some must-have GB games:
Balloon Kid: the much-neglected sequel to Balloon Fight and my first GB game (exluding Tetris).
Donkey Kong '94: Although, it'll be soon be made obsolete with the arrival of DK+ (whenever the hell Nintendo decides to release it).
Double Dragon: Very faithful portable representation of the Arcade original and much better than the NES version that came out earlier. DD2 is not so bad (it has 2P Co-Op), but it's too linear (and they used the same subway stage twice, Warriors-style). DD3 is crap (it wasn't made by Technos).
Mega Man V: The only original Mega Man game on the original Game Boy.
Metal Gear (Solid) Ghost Babel: Where's the GBA sequel?
Zelda DX and Oracle series: Why can't we have an original Zelda game for the GBA?
Konami GB Collection Vol. 1-4: Sadly, this series was only released in Japan and Europe, but it's worth it if you want to have Operation C, Castlevania Adventure and Nemesis (Gradius) on the same cart.
Metroid II: Nuff' Said.
Final Fantasy Adventure: See DK '94, but replace "DK+" with "Sword of Mana".
Fortified Zone: A rather decent overhead shoot-em-up. There was a sequel released in Japan too.
The best part of Fall of the Foot Clan were the hidden minigames.
Two of my favorite GB games are Revenge of the Gator and Bases Loaded GB. RotG is one of the best video pinball games I've played on any format, and BL is just a fun, highly playable baseball game.
Operation C is also excellent.
I'm always surprised when I see someone mention Survival Kids, which I've seen happen all of...one time before now. I liked that game a lot, even if the execution didn't do the concept justice. I'd completely forgotten about that game until a few weeks ago. And in the time since then I've forgotten about it again. But when I do remember the game I have fond memories. I killed a boar and ATE IT!
Blaine gets super points for not only digging the Survival Kids, but Motocross Maniacs. That game was a lot of fun. It's pathetic that Konami couldn't turn out a wortwhile sequel for the GBA.
I think Link's Awakening and the Oracle games blow a Link to the Past out of the water. Don't bother telling me otherwise. Anyone who disagrees is blinded by nostalgia. Or anti-handheld bias. Or has criminally bad taste. Or all three.
Dragon Warrior 3 is the most fun I had playing an RPG in the last decade. Everyone should buy it.
And I can't think of a single game that wasn't mentioned already. I think every other handheld deserved to be slayed by the Game Boy, but its good games were few and far between.
(Oh snap! Revenge of the Gator! How'd I miss that. Good game. I played that all the time.)
:lol:Quote:

Indeed. This is a port of the awesome SFC remake that was (naturally) never released here during the 16-bit era. The game survived the transition to the GBC completely intact, except for a downgrade in graphics and sound (even so, they're still wicked good for GBC). Even the silky-smooth monster animations are still present, made possible by the enormous cart size (32MBits). It completely blows away the original NES game in every way imaginable. Best handheld RPG, period.Quote:

Some of my other personal favs:
- Final Fantasy Adventure
- Gargoyles Quest
- R-Type
- All three Zeldas (LA, both Oracles)
- Super Mario Land
- World Cup Soccer (portable Kunio-Kun!)
- Dragon Warrior Monsters (nice Pokemon alternative)
- Dragon Warrior I-II
I always have a soft spot for alternative RPG's. I like RPG's I'm just sick of being a fucking knight or a wizard. The 'roles' you can play can be anything, and that's usually not reflected in games.Quote:

Also for some reason, I really enjoy an RPG on a handheld. In my experience, the times I need a handheld game the most it's times when I need to invest a lot of time.
It's like a nice long book.
More so than a pick up and play arcade type game. Although if I beat the RPG then, it's not as useful in that regard.
So...soft spot for alternative handheld RPGs.
And Motocross Madness doesn't get nearly enough props, glad you agree.
This man speaks the truth. Find it and play it, a damn fine action puzzle game.Quote:

Bionic Commando- The original GB version smacks the NES version, my fav GB game.
Wendy Every Witch Way- From the makers of Shantae, Metal Storm is in the guise of a little witch. Great gameplay, animation and design, too easy though.
Adventures of Lolo- great redux of the series
Shantae- a bit uneven in places but a fine game for fans of Monsterworld.
Snoopy's Magic Show- simple puzzle game with focus on action.
Blaster Master Enemy Below- Control is stiff, and the tank is a bit too big, still the best Blaster Master after the NES version.
Final Fantasy Adventure- Can't wait for the remake, when I sold my GB stuff years ago it was the only game I kept.
Trax- Cute overhead tank game from Hal Labs.
