Copied Manuals and inserts - Aren't they in copyright violation?

A number of you know that Gamestop uses photcopied color inserts and copied manuals, EB may but I've seen more of it at GS.

Isn't that in violation of some copyright laws ? I thought Nintendo sued rental places that used photocopied manuals.

Theft issues aside, I think the policy sucks and may choose to take my Business elsewhere, if they accept incomplete games, someone's buying em I guess.

Funco back in the day sold compete games with box and all but things have changed since then.

Actually now that I hear about Game Crazy's policy I'm not to thrilled with them either.

Many smaller stores sell complete games for even less and I'd rather give them my Business.

Funco usually just deducted $1 for a missing manual and $1 for a missing box. They were just as bad as anyone else, when it came to games missing manuals and boxes. There are just some real shitty game owners out there.

I'd also like to dis on Blockbuster and the way they totally destroy a games cases and pretty much lose the manuals. I can't see why they just don't keep the manuals out of the rental boxes, as they are usually lost or stolen within the first week. It's for this reason, that I rarely buy a used game from Blockbuster. Hollywood video, on the other hand, usually sells thier used games intact.

Video Update was smart enough to chrage a hefty fee for lost manuals, never saw a missing manual there, heh.

Nintendo themselves sell photocopied manuals on their web site (mostly for older games).

Why would anyone buy a used game from a rental store? Used games at places like EB have usually only been played by one person, but a game you get at Hollywood or Blockbuster has been played by dozens or people who don't give a shit about taking care of it because it's just a rental. Most of 'em look like a cat has been using the disc as a scratching post. Plus, most rental places prices are crap for used games.

the only thing GS has is prints of the cover art but that doesnt get sold with the games thats just a better way of displaying a game when we dont have the cover for it than writing the name on some lame piece of paper

but there are no photocopied manuals or covers sold with the game

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but Friday after seeing X2, I stopped at the Gamestop nearby.

I saw a used Omega Boost for $7 and decided to pick it up. At this time, I noticed all the covers of the displays were paper scans, but when I actually paid for the item, I expected to get the real manual and back insert.

All I got was the disc and that selfsame paper scan. They didn't even give me the full jewel case, just the black disc holder inside the case.

I guess for $7 I could've done alot worse, but if all the displays of the used games are paper scans, and they're actually giving these to the customers.. what happened to the original manuals/inserts? Surely, they weren't ALL lost or destroyed by the customers who cashed them in..

I would sure hate to buy a used DC Spider-Man and get a cheap cover scan, no manual (not even a copy) and no jewel case, especially if I'm paying $20 for the item..

John I've seen photo copied manuals before, but they might have come from trade-ins, but if you say they don't do that I'll take your word, and stand corrected.

Yeah sometimes they give you the copied insert, I guess it depends on the store, or how well the clerk is informed.

My local Gamestop has plenty of photocopied inserts, and they do get sold with games. I find it particularely offensive, because this store has almost no games that still have their original manuals.

Are you sure this isn't a policy that varies by store?

Like I said, it's pretty rare that I even consider buying a used game from Blockbuster. The Hollywood video, that used to be across the street from me, was a lot better about it. I actually bought N64 games with boxes and manuals complete, for under $12. Some of the games were less than a couple of months old at the time.

if its a photocopied manual chances are the game was originally bought from blockbuster and then traded in

I dont know where your at but im in New Jersey and i was told by our Regional Manager himself not to sell the full color inserts we use when a game gets traded in with out its case or manual

thats the only time these things are supposed to be used when a game is traded in with no manual or cover and its the only copy you have



as far as the case thing i dont know how other stores handle it i know we always order empty jewel and dvd cases that way if a game gets traded in with no case we can at least give some one a case with the game when they buy it

I have never, ever seen a copied manual at Game Stop...

Nintendo did sue the rental companies, and they used as their basis the manual-copying thing.

However their real hope was to actually get companies to stop renting games for good.

They lost the case, however.

this again is true...the covers are for visual promo and the customer is to be told that only recieve the disc before purchase...this is how it was when I was a manager...

This particular store uses colour copies because, maybe a year ago or so, some smart person then in charge of the store decided it would be a good idea to throw out all the manuals & cases from their PSX & DC games (to save space).

Eventually, they must have come to their senses, because they put the games back in cases and replaced the covers with colour copies (they're photocopies, not printed inserts). The fact that they still have racks full of them is testament to how well that particular scheme worked.

I'm in Hawaii, by the way. Never lived in any other part of the US, so I'm not familiar with how other Gamestops do business.

do you have any other GS or EBs around you or is that one store pretty much it?

i knwo when theres not competition in an area lots of stores can do stupid things
