Anyone ever go scuba diving?

I have a cruise coming up next month with my girlfriend to the Eastern Carribian, and among the other things I plan on doing I indend to do some scuba diving when I get to some of the ports, something I've always wanted to try. I've never done it before, and plan on taking a course on the ship itself en route. Has anyone here ever gone diving, and if so, is it difficult to pick up? There are several different excursions available, ranging from beginner (you swim in a cove and feed fish) to advanced (you explore old sunken ships, sounds awesome), and was wondering whcih ones to sign up for. I'm an excellent swimmer but I don't know how difficult it is with that tank on your back.

Well, I spent alot of time snorkling(or whater it spelled) when I was younger. Always wantet ot try scuba diving, so hopefully, in the future I will :)

I went snorkling in the Caribbean once when I was younger. It was a lot of fun. I swam with some mantarays or something.

Scuba sounds like a lot of fun. I'd definitely like to try it one day.

Ohh...that's terrible. What exactly happened to him? I'm asking mainly so I can try to avoid the same fate. ;)

Breathe even breaths, stay aware of your surroundings if you dive near or in any caves/wrecks, and make sure your mask fits appropriately. If you go through the intro course on the ship and stick to newbie-friendly dive locations, you'll be fine.

Oh, and, uh, if one attacks you, smack the shit out of the shark's nose. It screws with their senses, and they tend to let you go after that. And stay the fuck away from baracuda!

A bit back when I was a in my teens. My family use to go to the Keys every other summer to catch grouper and lobster (before that got waaaaay too expensive). I'd never consider myself an expert by any means, but I've known a hell of a lot of divers. And when many of your relatives dive, you learn things. :)

Cool. Would you say it's easy to pick up? I mean, you're just breathing from a tank, the only hard part I can think of is perhaps getting lost underwater if you go deep. I'm taking the course and the beginner dive, but I also really want to try the advanced one where you exoplore old wrecks, but I don't know if I'll be ready for that.

Good luck smacking a shark's nose, a large percentage of divers don't realize they've been attacked until the shark has left. Don't wear anything shiny. I'd stay away from ships and caves if all you're getting is a rudimentary course on a boat. I'd suggest doing the cove thing and just exploring, it's a great feeling, but don't get in over your head unless you feel comfortable. Snorkeling is nothing like diving, make sure you get a nice underwater camera.

Dolemite: Breathing from a tank is easy. Wearing your gear appropriately, learning to keep an eye on your air gauge, and knowing emergency procedures is the harder part. In a safe environment (like a pool), anyone can dive. :) I'd hold off on the wrecks until after your first real dive. If you do go exploring any wrecks, I'd think about going with an experienced diver.

Well, you go supervised on all the dives, especially the one where where you explore wrecks. Perhaps I'll just try out the beginner dives first and see how confortable I feel about the more advanced stuff...

I don't plan on scuba diving, but I remember seeing Al Roker do it on the Today Show. The dude looked like a whale, I swear. It was surreal.

Well, I had a chance to go Scuba Diving in Lake Superior, but I backed out due to my fear of water (thanks Jaws). I probably wouldn't mind trying it someplace that wasn't so murky, maybe the Caribbean.

I'm sure you'll have fun Dolemite, and just bitch slap any shark that is fool enough to mess with you.

machine50 is off scuba diving in the Southern Caribian as we speak. He's off on his honeymoon this week, since he got married this weekend. (Should have seen us in our tux's ;) ) Anyway, I know he just bought his own equipment and had been taking leason up until he left. He should be back about Mid-next week. Just sent him a PM, and I tell him to check his box first thing when he get's back.
