I cant count how many times this has happened:
01. Person makes a "Hi, Im a n00b" thread.
02. Person gets flamed by everybody.
03. Person is never seen again.
Has anyone yet survived this ritual? Hmm... Im not saying that it should be changed (I rather like it myself), Im jus' sayin'.
I'm find if thise trend continues in some cases. Like that guy who wouldn't use spaces after punctuation. He was a fuck.

I did, though it wasn't really a "Hi I'm T3H n00b please flame me" thread. I think only 10% of us actually do survive. Though sometimes it's for the best.
alot of us didn't have to, we came over in the GameGO! migration.. Like me! I was here slightly before most..a month maybe.. I guess i kinda did a "Hi i'm new Thread" but none of these guys were here yet... I wasn't flamed, i was welcomed.... and began posting! :D

Showed up post-GameGo, started posting. It never once occured to me to start introducing myself. It seems kind of useless to jump up and say hi, when I could just start talking instead. Besides, I can't imagine how it would matter.

When I showed up at GameGo! (right when the board opened I think...) I never made a newbie thread. The closest thing I ever did was announce my name change from KRSking to this one.

If this is a true rule, it should be in the TOS. It may be unwritten, but how are people supposed to know if they've never been here before?
I made an "I'm new here" thread but didn't get flamed for it...so I guess you would say I never went through the ritual.

I think i just flew in swinging in an anime board topic, so no introduction, just kind of me being me, loud, obnoxious etc...i think i remember fighting with nick in a religion thread too, but beyond that,i just assimilated in.

At least since the TNL days, back during gamego the mod's deleted those responses before the person in flames was even able to read them. I remember Matt had a negative post count from all those deleted messages.
I'm kind of happy we are a little less strict in that department.
Well, the few who actually survive the initial abuse for creating such a thread and go one to become regular contributors here are probably the cream of the crop.
To become a really good poster on awesome boards like TNL, such a close-knit community, you have to have somewhat thick skin and the ability to be humored. If getting flamed for creating a board-cluttering "Hi, I'm new here..." thread is enough to drive someone off, that person probably wouldn't have become a very worthwhile member of the community.
Sorry if this is coming off a bit elitist, but it's true. It's how TNL has managed to stay such an awesome forum in the almost two years since I first came here. Those who weather the initial semi-friendly, semi-hostile forum initiation almost always end up being awesome new members of the community, occasional exceptions like Opa-Opa nothwithstanding.

I came when Bahn was whoring this place at SRK (well, the fan-art board anyway). It was really quiet, so I kinda dissappeared, and then the Gamego migration happened, and I took an even longer hiatus. I was an invisible poster for a while, now I'm atleast somewhat recognisable (i think :p ).

I'd rather have attention-seeking newbies than veterans who can't respect a couple of simple rules. Stop with the ugly terms or you will be banned from every forum but Fight Club.
To stay on topic: it is totally against my nature to post an "Hi, Everybody" thread. I'd rather just lurk in the background, rise to power, and get all pissy with people. And Matt's negative post count was in the 600's. It may have hit 700 for a day.
I swear matt's negative posts were higher than that.

I think the easiest way to avoid most of the hazing and stigma of being labelled a 'newbie' is to not make an abundance of new topics. Most of the time, topics are made and nobody cares about them unless there's a respected member of the community pledging them, so why bother? It just makes you stand out like a sore thumb.
Simply adding your 2 cents is enough, and the occasional good topic. Even then you're still seen as a new person and not taken seriously, but it matters not.
Also, staying away from some of the larger boards and going in to Cinemania and The Art Galleria is also welcomed for newbies. The Art Galleria is the most sane and ego-less portion of the board, so it's a great and more mellow place to post.
I slipped through the cracks, I never got the STFU newbie picture, and now it's too late. I feel evil because of this.
I made a hello post, was hazed and moved on, I rarely post here but the tough welcome actually made me feel a bit more welcome, as strange as I'm sure that sounds.

it seems as though it has been growing worse though, the point I bring up is not neccessarily the direct subject being scared off by an "initiation." But the ones who view the results from the shadows and decide that the slings and arrows aren't worth braving.
With over a thousand registered members, I don't know that TNL even has half of them actively posting yet.

I understand, and I don't think that's too much of a problem... but the pics rarely seem to come alone. And it used to be that along with the STFU nOOb pics, came an honest, warm-hearted welcome. now they just seem to be pissing contests for who can heap the worst flame on someone who has yet to really encounter the board.
