Sony's involvement in the industry dates back to publishing computer games as early as 1983, long before Imagesoft, in case anyone's wondering.
Also, I think a genre by genre comparison for the 8-bit era is possible but that's another can of worms.

It just goes to show you the Sega fanboys here at TNL. The thread about how great the Genesis is went rather smoothly, without people going in and crying for the SNES. You make an SNES thread and all the haters come out to cry. On that note, I'll agree that the SNES kicked the shit out of the Genny in the Action/adventure/RPG genre. I think that Landstalker is the best one ever made(yes, even better then Zelda) but the amount of great ones on the SNES can't be touched. The Genny was a better system for shooters and sports by far. The SNES had great ones but they couldn't touch the Genny here. Virtua racing sucked monkey dick, Sonic CD was ass, Metroid is adventure, platformers were WAY better on the SNES. My point is, both systems kicked fucking ass! Anyone that has to cry for one system is a fanboy without question.
It didn't kick the shit out of it, Phantasy Star 4, and Shining Force, makes the Genesis about equal with Snes in RPGs.
Surely. Donkey Kong Country and Plok 4 life.Quote:

I've got to agree with you there. DKC sucked, I never played Plok but it looked like shit. I just think the SNES had all of the great ones, where the Genny had a bunch of really good ones. My personal favorite platformer on the Genny was that Tiny Toons one. A really good game. I also like Rocket knight adventure. Sonic 1 was great but went downhill after that. I will reiterate, both systems kicked ass. I'm glad I owned/own them, and I'll NEVER stop playing either one.Quote:

Hmm, I thought sonic and Knuckles kicked a lot of ass, but 2 was mediocre.
Sorry for the confusion. I won't speak on pure RPGs because I don't play them. I never did, and never will. I was trying to classify the Action/RPG and Action/adventure genre since so many poeple have a different opinion of what classifies as what as far as the genre goes.Quote:

You'd be surprised at how many Genny RPGs never made it stateside. :(Quote:
its a matter of taste, Lunar is ok, personally i think FFIV is the best RPG ever made, and i find the Phantasy Star games to be bad, i dont like the look of the art in the games, or the gameplay and theres still a SHIT load more RPGs on SNES then on genny, you have a greater variety to pick from, hell if you include RPGs that didnt come here its not even an argument SNES wins hands down
I don't see how the pad is an issue. So you had to go out and buy it, big deal. Once you had that pad, NOTHING on SNES played like it. Fighting games on SNES were a chore to play vs. on Genny because of that awesome 6 button pad.Quote:
the Genny GAME with a 3 button pad you had to press start to use, not till the later models did it start to ship with the 6 button pad, the 6 button pad is something youd have to buy extra if your going to include that then theres a shit load of SNES fighting sticks out there, thus making your argument invalid and goes back to the color and sound which were god AWFUL on the Genny, the SNES destroyed it in color and sound and thus Super Street Fighter II was better on it
I will agree about SSF being better on SNES though. Champion edition was better on Genny but Super SF was a mess. What the hell were those extra megs for?
You have no idea what you're missing.Quote:
I only bought it for altered beast when it came out because i loved that game, and that game is a prime examble of the genny a game i loved back when it came out and now i cant play it for more than 2 minutes with out wanting to vomit, like the majority of the genny's library for me
Is this TNL or Gaming-Age? Sorry to see the SNES thread derailed by Yoshi's and Johnpv's weaksauce and completely off-base flames.
Genesis and SNES libraries are gold and still stand up to this day. Both systems had their strengths over the other, yet they can still compete on each other's level (ie. Genesis had the better selection of action games but SNES had an excellent selection as well, fighters were better on SNES but Genesis was no slouch, etc.) for my favorite 16-bit system I have to choose Genny though. Here are the SNES games I love to play:
Super Metroid
Hagane (Shinobi killer? Almost)
Castlevania 4
Contra 3 (thought it was a better game than Hard Corps)
Space Megaforce
Turtles in Time
Wild Guns
Axelay
Cybernator
Demon's Crest
Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island
And that's only a fraction of the top SNES titles, really. Great system.
