I'm starting to get some colored work done on these pics, so I figure I'd post some here for some feedback, and then just update this thread when I get as finish the rest of the pieces.
Anyway, this is Vessa. The backgrounds won't be solid, but I haven't gotten to those yet.

Actually, I'm using someone else's cut-off hand right now as it is, so I suppose I could just loan it to you sometime. :)
I like it! (reminds me quite a bit of pre-x-men Rouge.)
I like it, but the forearm seems bigger than the upper arm. Is that normal? The drapery and plump form is extremely well done, though.
I want to say first that I really really like it and the comments that follow are not meant to be taken negatively. :p
It's hard to see on this crappy work monitor, but her mouth looks huge. I know she's shouting and all, but it looks like %25 larger than it should be or something. By contrast, her fingers look really thin, especially considering the perspective.
Also, is there any reason why she's wearing Doc Dooms cast-offs? I think one extra color on the body suit for lining and such would help bring it out much better. Right now I can't help thinking she's battling the Fantastic Four.
The shadows are incredible, but I'm sure you knew that already. :)

Well, in her reference drawings, most the characters have fairly large "western" mouths...so, when they're shouting, they do look sort-of large. Now that you mention it, it may look a tad large, but, I think it works.Quote:

As for the Doc Doom comments, I hadn't thought of that...in her reference drawings, she is typically fully covered by her cloak, and only her hands and feet stick out when she's doing stuff, or maybe it'll blow black when she's doing something exciting (like in the "action pose" pic)...normally you can only see her nose and mouth since the hood casts a heavy shadow, and extremeties when they poke through the cloak.
I should probably post the storyline and full character bios as well, because it makes a bit more sense why characters are dressed or look a certain way, but I figured I'd wait till more images are uploaded.
It looks appropriate to me, in a sort of Joe Maduriera (sp?) fashion. It maight just be me, but do those thighs look massive to anyone else? I really like it though, FF.Quote:

Fox: I think it's just more because Dr.Doom is known for his green hooded cape, so that's why you get the reference. I don't think it has anything to do with it, really, since she's not a behemoth genius in a huge suite of armor underneath.
Dr. Doom was the first thing I thought too. I was tired and couldn't figure out why he looked so damn sexy. Then I realized a hot chick had stolen his cloak.

Okay, here's the next one, still sans background.
The art style is a little different...as in, this one took about 3 times as long as the other one...I'm not sure I like the differences enough to warrant the extra time, plus, I'm going to have to get them all to match before I'm done :sweat:
Also: Yeah, the thigh (on the first drawing) looks funny, but as far as I can tell by foreshortening check-alls, it should be about right.
Also2: Yes, I know the second gal looks sort-of thick, but it's because her character actually is, and not because I messed up.

She looks short... she seems to lack a stomach, but that could because of the massive breasts that are taking up half her chest.
i like the second 1, i do have to agree with Thief~Silver though, not that theres a problem with that, those are my kind of girls actually.... damn im depressed again

Looks good. I think a lot of people miss the fact that she's hunched, so a stomach would be less visible with those huge boobies in the way.

Here's the third character, Dolomus. I think I like this style, especially since it's MUCH easier to paint.

Fury~good stuff. It's nice to see someone who can draw girls in more proportions than the typical heroine stature.

Wow...the second one is really amazing. I really have not seen anybody who can draw a girl thick like that and still make her look really attractive.
The last guy doesnt look as good, but only cause of the angle. It just does not seem very flattering.
The stomach area on that last one looks like it will be too small for a character so large. Otherwise, damn good job. I feel a bit jealous because your style is similar to something I've been experimenting with.
Yeah, the stomach is too small...the idea was, that since he's so tall, you be looking up a bit at him, and that the torso would be foreshortened a bit. That's why you can't see his neck (as he's looking down over his collar bone and pecs) and why his arms especially large, since they're coming forwared and the body's leaning back...unfortunately, it didn't totally come out like that, but I think it's go enough for now.

I had to stop doing the character shots for a bit and work on the cover. I just finished the pencils, and now I have to ink and paint it (ugh...I hate inking). I would just paint on the pencils, but they just weren't clean enough for a scan... Obviously, it looks pretty busy right now, but when color and a light source is added, the composition should come together a bit more.

edit: Oh yeah, the reason you can see lines through the woman in the front is because, storyline-wise, she's like a ghost (it's pretty complicated), and will be semi-translucent. A lot of effects and things like that will need to be realized in the painting (also, the small character in the upper-righthand corner will be "hazed out", as if she's far in the distance).
Okay, I've finally managed to color this illustration...it's not entirely done, as it's the game cover, and needs a the title and all that stuff...but it's essentially done.

Now, this is a huge, hi-res image. I'm really shrinking it down here to fit on the forum. Assuming most monitors out there still show stuff at 72 dpi, I'll give a link to a larger version of the image, but it'll probably be really big. (hmm...550k as a jpeg, shouldn't be too bad).

edit: Damn, I've already found things that need to be fixed...eh, I'm done for today though. Don't you hate that...if you look at any image long enough...eventually all you notice are the errors...oh, and jpeg compression is nasty...these look 300% better in their original and/or non-compressed formats. Not only is that art work truly incredible, but the character designs are so unique and obscure, that it would make one of the coolest and hardest to love character casts of all time, in my humble opinion. Great art, and originality, very nice.

I went into this project thinking it would be a cakewalk, but it's remarkably difficult to come up with original characters and content when you're required to...espeically with a mental catalogue of thousands of character from comics, anime, and videogames (hundreds of fighting game characters alone) that you're subconsciously drawing from. I was surprised how many times I noticed my original design and story borrowed from something existing, and sometimes in a not so subtle way :sweat: Even my final designs have their definite influences if you look for them.
Maybe I'll post the story synopsis and character bios sometime...they're fairly extensive, and I don't think anyone would really be interested, but all the background information is there where this ever to be an actual game.

The front man reminds me a LOT of Akuma from street fighter, his facial features. but I love his zombie look. Looks like nothing will stop him from achieving his goal or something.

How much time do you put in to colouring those guys?
Depending on the character, it takes 4 hours or so. That doesn't include the time it takes to draw, ink, scan, and prepare the inks for the coloring, though.
What about the HUGE one?
Around 25 to 30 hours, maybe a bit more for color checks and the title.
The only problem I have with the cover, is Vessa looks kind of out of place. I mean, everyone else for the most part is connected, and she's just kind of floating out there in the middle of nowhere.
But still, I'd buy this game with this artwork in a heartbeat =D

The last is good, but I feel like it could have been better :/ If there's anything in mythology I like more than Valkyries I have yet to find it, I was hopeing for more :( Guess you've got the bar set pretty high now :P
I like it still, but I was thinking (coming into this thread) "Awesome, Fury drew a Valkyrie how can it not be the coolest thing I've seen here?!" and it wasn't your best (in all honesty). Perchance it is the angle and (I now note the comment on the lack of bangs - that might fix it up considerable though I must stress it's not bad at all) the fact that the wings on the the helm are perfectly verticle.
I hate to nit pick :( You're a great artist, best I've seen here by far, but I really have high expectations with you -_o
All of the others are flawless, Styxx and Kale are magnificent (I especially like Kale - the Foxish mask looks Uber-Cool)

*confused* Ah well...this whole thing has been pretty interesting, because I'm always surprised at which ones people think are good or bad, are where the flaws are, relative to me.
First, I may try to go back in and draw the bangs...but, there's a high chance they'd look added in, so I'm not sure I want to deal with it, espeically since I still have three more to go and a website. But, that omission aside, I thought the last pic was actually pretty good.
Tracer: Thanks for the compliments. The design you linked to is the same design in the illustration...sans bangs. So I'm not sure why you like that one so much, but are 'meh' about the "action pose". -part of it may be the angle, I think. The characters just can't stand there in their full shots, like they do in the technical drawings, so I have to think of things to do with their bodies. For Mer-Anne, I was trying to convey her being powerful, and hovering/jetting...so I tried a slightly from below angle, with one leg bent, and one receding. That turned out okay, imo, but the face and the shading for it were really a challenge, and probably what makes the technical drawing more appealing (I'm guessing). Since it's slightly turned up, and we see the underside of her nose and nostrils, plus her cheek bones set right beneath her eyes, it gives a certain vibe. It's not a very pretty angle, but she's not necessarily a "good" character in the story, so I thought something slightly sinister would be apt. Still, I think it's the weakest part.
As you can see from the pencil drawing, the wings do slant back, but from a straight on angle in the colored version, that's not noticeable.
So, thanks again. What do you think would help the main illustration?

Might just be the angle - I dunno what it is (all of the other chracters are great by the way) and yes the ommission of bangs too. I guess I found it hard to see the action that the angle would imply.
Okay, I just finished Chance and Nadine...I messed with the pencils, because I'm generally bad at inking small-scale images, and I think the results where pretty good. I'm actually pretty pleased with this. My main gripe is that Chance and Nadine's color schemes don't really compliment each other that well, but I think I balanced it out all right.

Chance doesn't look scarey anymore. I would make his mouth totally closed and his face relaxed, like he's a stone cold killer.
That's the impression of him I get in the first one. Other than that, everything is rendered awesome, as usual.
Chance isn't supposed to be scary. You just got a peek of that element of his personality on the cover.

... I really can't think of anything to say. The images already look like they belong in a fighting game. I'd really like to see them brought together in some sort of flash intro like the intro of GGXX, though I say that naively not knowing how much work that would entail.
Great work as always. I especially like the female characters because I'm shallow like that. My favorite part is all the non-standard poses you do that even pros seem to have trouble with, but with yours everything looks just how it should be.

the first thing that came to my mind when I read that, was Nei from Phantasy Star II. Do you plan to kill this poor girl as well *knowing laugh*
