This is somewhat of an offshoot of the "SNES!" thread. IMNSHO, Metroid is essentially a genre unto itself. Recently, IGA's take on the Castlevania series has joined in that same formula. Are there any other games that have that same side-scroller exploration? Are they any good?
Sega's Cyborg Hunter and Zillion are both Metroid-like. Zillion is a good Impossible Mission-type game but somewhat dated. Cyborg Hunter is more linear than Metroid but it's just as good. It's one of the best 8-bit games out there.
The original Blaster Master and Blasting Again are somewhat like Metroid, but with a tank and overhead stages.
I think you need a on screen map to make these games enjoyable.
To my knowledge blaster master lacked a map.
Who developed Cyborg Hunter? I've never tried it...due to a distrust for 3rd party Master System games.

Sega developed Cyborg Hunter. Activision published most Western copies of it though. In Japan, it was based on Borgman but they got rid of the license for the domestic release.
Although somewhat of a longshot, one could count Splatterhouse 3. You were given lots of rooms to explore in the mansion that could be tackled in whichever order you chose(Lotta doors and pathways to choose from). There was a time limit though, so exploration had to be done and lightning speed. =/
I just remembered Antiriad but you beat me to it sleeve. :)

My favorite Metroidish game would have to be Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

I loved Zillion 1, hard ass game too. Can't believe I beat it. You could also go back to your ship and heal as well (did they have that in Metroid 1, I forget). If you mention SMS adventure/quest type games then you got to mention Kenseiden and Spellcaster,Quote:

KEnseiden was awesome, but the format was pretty different.
That reminds me, NeoZeedeater, I beat the japanese Kenseiden. No credits roll, I'm afraid :(

There were a small handful of SMS third-parties during its domestic life besides Activision's(Like Cyborg, Rampage was done by Sega).
Taito had Rastan, Parker Bros. had Montezuma's Revenge, King's Quest, Carmen Sandiego and Ultima IV, Absolute had RC Grand Prix, U.S. Gold had Gauntlet and Impossible Mission, and Tengen had Paperboy. These all came in North America.

Actually isn't Zelda and Metroid very similar?
They both have exploration. They both have inaccessible areas that become accessible once you gain a new item/ability.

Usagi reminds me of Beam's earlier game Fist II. That was an excellent action/exploration game for its time. It's around the same age as Metroid, maybe slightly older.

This might be a bit of a stretch but wouldn't Pitfall II fit in the Metroid/Castlevania category?

Super Adventure Island II (SNES)
The only thing that might disqualify it would be that you have to find the different Metroid-esque levels in a RPG-ish overworld, complete with random encounters (a-la Zelda II, except you can't avoid them).
Otherwise, it fits right in. Happens to be a great game, too.
