Companies tend to avoid negative publicity like that, although I can't figure out why for the life of me. Get enough moms marching in the streets about Satan corrupting their children through the evil cult of Atlus, and sales are guaranteed to go through the roof.

At any rate, you're right about their reasoning, though I believe that once they put it out it wouldn't be as big a deal as they think.

Christians want to be right, just like the rest of us, and so they find offence in anything that would warp, twist, pervert, or otherwise not represent them and their ideals accuratly.
Since they cannot "prove" anything concerning their beliefs, it makes it that much more diffcult to maintain (which I would imagine should garner some bit of respect), and so anything that threatens it is thrown out the window, imediatly.
I'll not hesitate to say that any Christian (we're generally an uppity bunch) who gets so sorely offended at things like MegaTen and the like aren't as secure as they should be in their faith.
Things like Doom, MegaTen, and The Longest Journey don't shake me, as I've been laying a foundation of faith for years. I am now unshakable. This, however, doesn't apply to all christians, and unfortunatly for those of us who can handle it, the majority of christians out there are rather weak in their faith.
I agree. The problem comes when one group tries to decide what sort of material should be available for consumption in a multifaith society. I don't think that anyone, no matter how weak their faith, is going to convert to Satanism because they played a game where you beat up demons.Quote:

The fact that good games are held back because publishers live in fear of bored grandmothers and their letter writing campaigns isn't really fair. Especially since, as you pointed out, such a stance isn't really coherent with a strong faith. If it were a product with an openly hateful stance towards the religion and could not be defended as legitimate social commentary, then you've got a case.
But if it's just the fact that they called them 'devils' instead of 'monsters' and there are meaningless pentagrams on the walls, trying to ban it probably does the religion more long term harm than good, and infringes on the rights of non-christians, or even christians who don't see it as a big deal.
I agree with every last word in that excellent post.
Both sides presented their case equally in the original SMT. I wonder if this game would do that.

Honestly, I tend to like anything with Biblical references, even if they aren't accurate. End of Days, the Seventh Sign, MegaTen, etc. I just think it's cool.
