The Persona games are a spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series. They're sort of an alternate-universe-if-things-in-the-first-game-happened-differently-sorta-thing. Shin Megami Tensei III is the third game in the mainline SMT series.

Damn, although I pretty much knew that, it still sucks to hear it from the horse's mouth. I really hope they bring over SMT 3, as it has a better chance of selling than shit like Cubivore.

Yeah, I hate it when they are releasing games like Tsungai, Hoshigami,Wizardary Sky Gunner, Dual Hearts, and Cubivore when they could be releasing Atlus R & D 1 games. The series is right behind Dragon Warrior and FF in Japan, but Atlus USA never seems to care.

If SMT3 is so loved and there's a great possibility it won't come out, why won't its US fans buy J-PS2s & import the darn thing just as Sakura Taisen fans did with the J-PS2/DC & its games? Someone out there will have the knowledge and patience to complete a fan translation. If one loves a game that much, it's worth the price!

In the meantime, Atlus USA shouldn't be criticized for localizing legitimately fun games like Sky Gunner, Dual Hearts, and (coming soon) Disgaea.

I hope they do release Shin Megami Tensei III here, if only it will keep a certain MegaTen fanboy (whom I'll refrain from naming, but you know who you are) from whining about Atlus releasing "inferior games" such as River City Ransom and Double Dragon.

I didn't like the first Persona - the dungeons pretty much killed it for me.

I really liked Persona 2 - the story, characters, and atmosphere were all awesome.

I'm gonna pick up Devil Kids.

And I hope this comes out in the US.

River City Ransom will probably be cool, as long as it's a remake not a port with a few additions.

RPGs are largely story driven, so it's hard to play them if you don't understand any of the story. Sakura Taisen is an exception since there are translation faqs for it, though I admit I enjoyed playing though ST3 the first time without any translation, but I'm odd like that sometimes.

This though... I've played Hoshigami and Skygunner out of those listed. Hoshigami was..mediocre, but Skygunner is one fun little shooter and it, though not the others, was probably a hell of a lot easier to localise than a SMT game would be.

Most of Atlus USA's games are great- Kartia, Tactics Ogre, and Sky Gunner, but it's just annoying that they don't bring their own first party games over.

I actually have had shin megami tensei nocturne and it definately has an interesting story/atmosphere. And games with this much text do take a long time, and a lot of money to translate so its understandable why atlus is teetering on the edge of uncertainty as to a NA release.

It has nothing to do with Hoshigami or whatever somehow being cheaper to translate, and everything to do with SMT containing material guaranteed to piss certain christian groups off.

Companies tend to avoid negative publicity like that, although I can't figure out why for the life of me. Get enough moms marching in the streets about Satan corrupting their children through the evil cult of Atlus, and sales are guaranteed to go through the roof.

Would you like to know why? It isn't just Christians who do this, but anyone whose fundamental beliefs and views have been challenged.

Christians want to be right, just like the rest of us, and so they find offence in anything that would warp, twist, pervert, or otherwise not represent them and their ideals accuratly.

Since they cannot "prove" anything concerning their beliefs, it makes it that much more diffcult to maintain (which I would imagine should garner some bit of respect), and so anything that threatens it is thrown out the window, imediatly.

I'll not hesitate to say that any Christian (we're generally an uppity bunch) who gets so sorely offended at things like MegaTen and the like aren't as secure as they should be in their faith.

Things like Doom, MegaTen, and The Longest Journey don't shake me, as I've been laying a foundation of faith for years. I am now unshakable. This, however, doesn't apply to all christians, and unfortunatly for those of us who can handle it, the majority of christians out there are rather weak in their faith.

I agree. The problem comes when one group tries to decide what sort of material should be available for consumption in a multifaith society. I don't think that anyone, no matter how weak their faith, is going to convert to Satanism because they played a game where you beat up demons.

The fact that good games are held back because publishers live in fear of bored grandmothers and their letter writing campaigns isn't really fair. Especially since, as you pointed out, such a stance isn't really coherent with a strong faith. If it were a product with an openly hateful stance towards the religion and could not be defended as legitimate social commentary, then you've got a case.

But if it's just the fact that they called them 'devils' instead of 'monsters' and there are meaningless pentagrams on the walls, trying to ban it probably does the religion more long term harm than good, and infringes on the rights of non-christians, or even christians who don't see it as a big deal.

I agree with every last word in that excellent post.

Both sides presented their case equally in the original SMT. I wonder if this game would do that.

Honestly, I tend to like anything with Biblical references, even if they aren't accurate. End of Days, the Seventh Sign, MegaTen, etc. I just think it's cool.

i met with atlus on friday morning. they didn't seem to have come to a decision. their PR guy knows i am deep into SMT3 so he would have told me about it. on thursday night he told me they still hadn't decided. since i was at the show i wasn't aware that this news had come out. either way i can bug him next week.

they aren't using the revelations name for demikids, BTW. it's actually called 'shin megami tensei' and has the japanese SMT logo as well as saying it in english. and it was pretty funny, and seemed decent. i'm looking forward to it.

Way to speak on the behalf of thousands of gamers who aren't you.

There's a big difference between muddling your way through an RPG that you can't for the life of you understand, no matter how much you may try to tell yourself otherwise, and experiencing a game at it's fullest...ya know, in language that you can speak.

I'm pretty sure that I would not have reacted the way I did to Xenogears had I been playing through it in a language other than English. It just would have been frustrating, and I probably wouldn't have wanted to bother.

That's not really fair. Alot of people have played the related Persona and Maken X games, so there's no reason not to want to play the source material, especially when it looks more impressive than those.

Not to mention the fact that there are english roms that plenty of people here have played through, if not all.

There's only one transalated ROM that I know about and it's the original SNES SMT. It was transalated around about tens years since the originals release... hopefully this one will not take that long.=\

You could always commission someone to do the translation.

I've been considering importing this for some time now, fully expecting Atlus to decide not to bring it over to our shores.

In light of their neglecting to make a statement one way or the other, I'm going to go ahead an import.

The game starts in Tokyo during the 1990s. The backstory is that thousands of years ago, YHVH (the Judeo-Christian god) consigned all other gods, led by Lucifer, to the Abyss in a power struggle to become the ''top god.'' When the game starts, there is a secret society within Tokyo that is attempting to summon YHVH to Earth so he can rule it, and at the same time, another faction is attempting to summon Lucifer and his army to oppose the plan. You play as an ordinary citizen who gets caught in the middle of the conflict.

This conflict between the armies of YHVH and Lucifer, and the churches of humans supporting each side, forms the central theme of the game. Most of the game takes place 30 years later in 21st-century Tokyo, after YHVH's forces decimate Tokyo with nuclear missiles in an attempt to get rid of Lucifer's forces, sparking nuclear war and worldwide destruction. In the aftermath, each side is vying to gain control. As the player, your actions decide which side ultimately wins the conflict. (or neither!)

One of the great things about having the plot work this way is the wonderful sense of moral ambiguity it brings across. Both sides are merely fighting for what they believe is right and best for the world, and neither is truly ''good.'' YHVH wants to bring about the Thousand Year Kingdom and bring eternal happiness to his followers, but commits several acts of genocide in the game, and eventually plans to rule with an iron fist, killing everyone who does not worship him. Lucifer advocates freedom, tolerance and an equal chance for all, but wants total anarchy where might makes right and the strong dominate the weak. There is a third path you can take, allowing neither side to dictate the future of humanity, but it requires you to get your hands very bloody as you have to kill everyone on both sides of the battle. Making a ''moral'' final decision is not easy.

Choosing sides in the game is actually influenced by your character's alignment; YHVH's forces are aligned with Law, Lucifer's forces with Chaos, and Taijorokun (the ''hidden'' divine force supporting Balance) as Neutral. Alignment plays a huge part in the game, as it not only affects how the story ends up, but how you play the game. If you are aligned with Chaos, you cannot join up with or summon Law demons, and vice versa. It also affects what equipment you can wear, and how certain NPCs will respond to you. And of course, the last boss and ending changes depending on what your Alignment

In answer to RedCo's question, I think Kayama and his translations have mor eto do with popularizing ST in the west than you're giving credit for. If there were translations like that availible for most of the SMT games, I know I'd own alot more.

Never played Sakura Taisen a day in my life, but I have played through Persona 1 and 2, and Maken X (even though I didn't realize it was part of the series until right now).

I'd like this one, because I enjoyed Persona 1 and 2. So I think you can just kiss my ass at this point.

Except it's not really part of the series at all. :) It is by the same team, though (R&D1) and has great Kaneko character designs.

There is a big differance between Atlus saying "We want to bring it to the U.S.!" and SCEA letting them bring it over.

SCEA wouldn't fail this game, i think. the gfx are tight, anyway, which is still the main weapon they have when they want to fail something, so they'd have to find another reason. they passed disgaea, and that looks WAY worse. like, vandal hearts straight port to PS2 vs hi-res ico or something. =)

i talked to atlus again today and got the "no decision has been made yet" thing again. i'm not exactly hanging my hopes on it at this point. i think i have enough games to keep me busy either way, although i'd be much happier with it than without it.
