Feature: E3 2003 Wrap-up

For those looking for closure to this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, and for those just looking to be entertained, we present The Next Level's E3 2003 Wrap-up.

The feature is divided into four parts:

1) Taste the power of an Internet deity as you lose yourself in the words and images of our very own Reno.

2) Hear what our crew has to say about the show's highlights and their own personal milestones.

You guys didnt name Half-Life 2 game of show?

Are you kidding me?

Jeez, my respect for the editorial half of this website just plummeted so much, I doubt whatever's left can even be measured.

I didn't go, so I'll give it "Trailer of the Show."

Well, I didn't have a chance to see the game in detail aside from the footage I checked out during my time at the IGN offices. And although I am not big on PC titles at all, it clearly was one of the games that rightfully deserves a nod of acknowledgment. My only guess is the crew that attended is driven more towards console games and thus were indifferent to this upcoming gem. At the very least, I did make a mention of it within my upcoming column.


...and if it was not playable, how can you expect an editorial team to acknowledge something as Game of the Show? That just seems wrong for the games that were playable. Based on your reasoning, I would give MGS3 that recognition.

No GT4 was expletive deleted.
It took em 6 versions to improve the rubberband AI and it still sucks.

Why was Crystal Chronicles named best handheld game? Isn't it a GameCube title?

Tyler: nah, they were just play fighting like the kids they are. :) Still, it was highly entertaining to see them roll around in each other's arms. Maybe you can e-mail the guys at IGN and request it, because I know someone had a video camera on them when the whole thing started.

How you guys do a special called:

Game of E3 (Other than Halflife 2), because it is leaps and bounds above everything else.

Hm, let's get a few things straightened out here:

First off, we (this being Bahn and myself) decided at E3 that we won't be covering PC games on the site, simply because there's too many games and not enough editors to cover both console and PC games. You probably noticed the huge bias towards console games on the site, with very few PC games being covered, if at all. This is why you don't see a "PC Game of the Show" award anywhere in the feature. Had such an award existed, I seriously doubt anyone would have picked something other than HL2.

Second of all, these picks were obviously personal choices. We didn't get together to discuss what game would get what award, it should be obvious since everyone picked their own games. As much as I was impressed with HL2 from the video I saw, I generally do not care for FPS games at all. On the other hand, I love my arcade racers, and I love F-Zero. Why wouldn't I name F-Zero my game of the show? Don't get me wrong, I respect what the first HL has done for the genre and what HL2 will probably do, but I'd take F-Zero GX over HL2 any day of the week.

The only reason I was doubtful is because I once read on Dave Zydkro's website that the IGN editors have a lot of rivalries - and that David Smith was fired mostly because people didn't like him. If the fight was between editors of any other publication (Gamespot, TNL, etc.) I would have known they were just screwing around.

Only PLAYABLE GAMES were eligible for the Best of Show award.

(or so I was told before writing this)

Thus the HL2 non-playable demo was excluded.
