I'm betting this "piece of kit" will sell for 99,999 yen. In the Spong article Sony says that it plans to market the PSX as a high end electronics product (meaning luxory) so don't expect this box to eclipse or replace the PS2. Other consoles have integrated their technologies into other products ala laserdisc players, computers, TVs, and even portable cd players and none of them ended up replacing the original. This is very commonplace in Japan.
Doesn't anyone here follow Sony's other product lines? :rolleyes: Just look at their history with their Clie line of PDAs. Sony will release a nice new expensive model only to discontinue it four months later in favor of the same model with an updated OS and Memory Stick Pro slot. The new model is then discontinued a few months later to be replaced with the same machine in a different casing. It's insanse. They also fail to release more than a handfull of peripherals for specific units (most are some what universal) making many of the new and exciting "buy me now!" features useless.
I was wondering when Sony would apply these ideas in the gaming market. Granted it's not served as the replacement for the PS2 but it could be the first in a long line of "upgrades", not necessarily in actual hardware, but in features and options and *price* :D
If things like this take off we could see the hardware race go from 4-5 years between consoles to as long as it takes Sony to repackage and add features.
