I know DDR and Parappa are the big heavyweights, but were there any precedents for this style of gameplay?
Answer if you know the trivia. You can cite PCs, but I'm primarily interested in knowing the first console or arcade rhythm game.

Ummmm..... was it Beatmania?
There had to be something before that....
Jam Jam Yo Momma on the Atari 2600, I believe.

Just kidding, Dolemite. Seriously, there has to be someone on TNL who knows.
It was probably either PaRappa or Beatmania. Unless you want to count those awkward band segments in Seasame Street games.
According to GameFAQs, Parappa came out in '96, and Beatmania in '98. Is it possible that NanaOn-Sha invented the entire genre?Quote:

I hope so. I'd love calling everything that is DancyBeatFreak a PaRappa rip off.Quote:

Toejam and Earl 2 had a Parrappa style minigame before Parappa came out. Never played 1 so it might be in there too.
Boom! Shaka! Boom! Boom! Shaka!

I was just going to mention the original TJ&E, which, if I remember correctly, had something similar.
