I popped in RE on Gamecube yesterday night and the game still looks incredibly beautiful. The CG backrounds moved and interacted so well with the polygons(splashing puddles, dust from wood floor, etc) that it looked seamless. It actually looks better than most 3D backround games since the level of detail is higher on the CG, especially that killer lighting.Quote:

RE and maybe a few other RPG games are really the only games that can pull off CG/polygon mix these days. I also have to mention, Alone in the Dark 3(Dreamcast version) in VGA has some spectacular graphics and pre-rendered backrounds. I just haven't gotten around to playing it fully yet but its just behind RE(GC).
Well that much is obvious. Rygar and Devil May Cry could have used better camera work but both benefitted greatly by the use of 3D environments. It made jumping and such trickier but a game like Rygar made good with the destructible environments and interactive environments like swinging from the discarmor.Quote:

It depends on how important it is to the gameplay to implement CG/3D stuff. Again I think RE and RE0 handled the CG backround interactivity pretty damn well, even if it isn't what it looks like.Quote:

I usually prefer polygonal backrounds/environments and the like because they sort of give me the comfort that its not painted on there just for show. Metal Gear Solid 2 uses this very well with regards to interactivity, but if the developers can make it look so damn good I wouldn't be able to tell the difference or care about it, then hey what the hell.
It will be interesting what RE4 will do with the now 3D enviroments. Maybe it will use it to the players advantage like blowing up a steam pipe or gas pipe or using certain areas as deathtraps(but I doubt it would be anything elaborate) and breakable objects/environments.
