I'm curious how many people here have FPSs as their favorite genre. I imagine the number is quite low. Personally, it's my favorite genre(for 3d games anyway) although I use the term quite loosely to include all kinds of borderline/hybrid games. This looks to be an amazing year for the genre. My three most anticipated games are Deus Ex 2, Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.
I used to. 94-97
Online and PC, yes. Offline, it's between that, strategy and RPGs. Nothing quite hits the spot like going on a rampage and killing extreme amounts of people, though...now I want to play MoH. :(
I actually like FPS games when they're well done, but I can't say they're my favorite.
Unfortunately, with the exception of System Shock 2 and Half-Life 1, the FPS genre has been incredibly stagnant. I look forward to HL2, but am lukewarm about Doom 3. I personally doubt id can pull off a scipted single player game like Valve. Also, Deus Ex was mediocre - the gameplay was incredibly key-driven and repetitive, and the storytelling couldn't hold a candle to HL.
I used to play them a lot online and i've recently started playing a bit of TFC after a year long break (just one clan match a week though for now). I'm very competant at the genre, seriously I love to get good at them. Quake 3 is the best multiplayer FPS, Halo the best in single player. Half-Life is merely good (I think all the reviewers never got to Xen) and UT is a joke. That's my outlook on the genre in a nutshell.
I thought about this long and hard and have realized FPS are my fav.
Thats not to say I dont like anything else because I do but lately I find myself playing FPS more than anything. Maybe its the fact they rock ass online and seem to be more in your face than other games.
But FPS done bad are sometimes the worst fucking games ever.
I'd say it's up there...
But not when considering only consoles.
When I played competitively during the Q2 days, I played them all relentlessly. Nowadays, I'm pretty indifferent. Single player, they usually bore me (much like rts games), but I'm looking forward to the games coming out this year.
Used to be mine. I'd eat em all up.
It's been only recently that I have been into consoles at all again...and over the last few weeks, I have seen some great games that, sadly, I have ignored.
for some reason I NEED gore in FPS. It just doesnt feel right capping a fool in the skull and he just falls back. Thats the only problem I have with the Medal of Honor games.
Though the PC game had some nice blood mods that made it that much better since you could see when you hit a guy.
It seems that most people associate FPSs more with multi-player than single-player. I prefer the single-player stuff overall. Without the single-player stuff, it wouldn't be my favorite genre. Although UT is one of my favorites. It obliterates the Quake games, IMO.
lanselius, I don't see how Deus Ex is anymore "key-driven" than System Shock 2. I also don't understand the repetitive comment either since it's one of the least repetitive FPSs out there. Most FPSs are constant shoot and run whereas Deus Ex is a mix of everything.
I'm pro-SP. MP these days is cheating, "yuo suxxorz", etc.
There are a few games I enjoy though.
My three favorite genres are fighting, FPS, and now, maybe, music.
As much as I love single-player FPSes, I'd say that I'd rather play multiplayer. NOTHING beats a lan party. Nothing.
Hell, I even installed Quake III (yes, I like Q3 more than UT. Much more. :) ) onto my high school network account. Instead of going to study hall, me and some friends stay in the biology lab. Oddly enough, the lab happens to be lined with P4 1.4 ghz machines, one of which is hooked up to the room's projector. The projector PC hosts, spectates (normally from an overhead-ish view), and records demos, while everyone else pulls out headphones and gets a good 40 minutes of fragging in. :D
First person shooters are definitely my favorite genre. The games are a lot of fun, single and multi, and they're always on the bleeding edge of technology, which means they usually have great graphics. This is a good thing.

You're right - I fault SS2 for also having repetitive level design and being key-driven. The difference is that SS2 gets by on storytelling and atmosphere and style, whereas Deus Ex drives me up the wall with a story that never even manages coherence.Quote:

And yes, Deus Ex provides you with the illusion of choice, in that you can take different approaches to any given problem. My beef is that once you've picked one lock in that game, you've done it a thousand times.
HL was simply running and shooting, for the most part, but if you think about it, it had more variety. The game was one surprise after another, constantly forcing you to attack and move in different ways. The HL2 footage at E3 shows that we can expect more of this.
Deus Ex 2 is going to be underwhelming, I can just feel it. Warren Spector's no Molyneaux, but he too has a tendency to overpromise and underdeliver.

I'm REALLY behind in fps games. Lots of catching up to do.
Looking forward to HL2. I've seen the screens, and viewed as many E3 vids as I could, but now having seen the actual 20+ minute presentation, I am nothing short of flabbergasted.
Looks like a contender for GOTC.(along with DE2)
Will this be the best game ever? More than likely.
Has Doom 3 been owned? Yes.
Do games like Half-Life 2 make console games look redundant? Yes.
Forget Doom3 (heavily script-based... I hope this isn't as limiting as it sounds, because Halflife was heavily scripted, but was awesome.. I just hope iD get it right though) it looks boring and short. No multiplayer, it can be completed in a weekend easily, it's gonna run like crap on lots of pc's and to be honest the gameplay is the same old style we've been playing for years. The only impressive aspect of it is the unified lighting engine, I'm more interested in what the engine licencees will do with the new engine, since devs like Raven are more concerned with gameplay than engine specifics, they'll take the nice graphics engine from Id and put some nice gameplay behind. For me graphics is only half of it because I want my fps environments to be interactive and shit, with decent convincing physics and objects that are interactive. So yeah, the lighting and atmoshpere will be the only strong points of doom 3.
The only thing with HL2 is it doesnt have the coolness of Halo2 or the atmosphere like Doom3 has. Still, the gameplay looked fun and the story sounds alright.

FarCry looks great. Stalker? (looks fkun awesome from what I've seen so far. Check ign movies especially the "Landscape and knocking stuff down" one. Seems like a mix of Halo, Morrowind, and Operation Flashpoint) JK3? Elite Forces 2? Breed?
HAVOK just looks unreal O_O, very close to life-like lol. Does this use DX9 features? The water looks like the pixel shader 2.0 water in the mother nature test for 3d mark 03. Game has a nice vibrant detailed look to it compared to Halo2 or Doom3.
Much to look forward to in fps land.
Shame about Viet Cong I was looking forward to that but it turns out average.
I'm looking forward to Soldier of Fortune 2 on Xbox. The PC one looked great and the online aspect for Xbox sounds damn cool. It uses the mic in a damn cool way. Press a button to use it like a walkie talkie to talk to your team where ever they are. Just talk into it the mic to talk to EVERYONE thats near you. Trash talking to a dead foe while you blast his body with bullets sounds cool to me.

I can't really say I have a favorite genre, outside of the classification "Action." But, if you consider my pure adoration of Metroid Prime, which has been eclipsed by my anticipation of Doom III, followed a bit lower by Breed, Planetside, and reserved interest in PC Halo (about frigging time), it's definately the genre holding my attention the most.
So sure, chalk up a vote.
I've been pretty much alienated by the genre in recent years. I used to really dig them, but when the focus switched to realistic level design, with gameplay supplied only by the AI, I really lost intrest. Outsmarting an idiot computer is not as much fun as a game with real level design. Occasionally an FPS will grab me, but it's very rare.
It's not even that I got sick of the genre, I just don't like what it's evolved to.
I don't like genres, I like games. There just so happens to be many games I like in this given genre.
But level design hasn't gotten worse. AI is still simplistic in modern FPSs anyway. FPS enemies don't act like real people. They're like Doom enemies except they dodge and throw grenades back.

In game design, the computer ALWAYS knows where you are. That guard knows your there up the stairs, it's how well you make him react that matters. Goldeneye 007 did that well, Halo does that alright, and Halflife is a great cinematic experience.
Still, I hate to limit myself.
Not me. I think I played them too much and got burned out, but I still plan on getting all the big ones coming up. HL2 and D3 are definite must haves at least.

Can you honestly say that the simplistic corridors of Doom and Quake are better than the intricate layouts of System Shock 2 or No One Lives Forever?
I understand that the genre has changed and it's less suited to your tastes but there is still some brilliant level design in the genre. Games like Red Faction are generic and don't represent the best the genre has to offer today.

I still like old FPSs. And I still like old-style FPSs (Serious Sam, for example). But the genre as a whole just doesn't click with me. The fact that FPSs seem to have so much designed around multiplayer doesn't help. Goldeneye was the first major popular FPS that just through and through did not appeal to me at all. After that it seems fewer and fewer did.
FPS's Are definitly Up there for me. No other genre eats up more of my time. Battlefield 1942 and it's Desert Combat takes the cake for me right now. Really looking forward to Halflife2! Hopefully its multiplayer component will be Team Fortress! I doubt it but it could happen!
Definitely the genre i've played the most of on the PC. I like Adventure games more though.

I have to tip my hat to the HALO and Goldeneye teams for conciously recognizing the shortcomings of the console controller and designing around it. That's probably why the PC to <x> ports suffer...Quote:

Autoaim is a pretty poor substitute for better control, though.

Bwahhaa, you fools, there WAS such a controller for the PC, the SpaceOrb 360. While it didnt make a huge impact, people to this day swear by it. From what I hear, it's excellent if you take the time to warm up to it.

Can someone outline the pros/cons of the PS2 rev of Deus Ex? I can't seem to find a copy of the PC game anywhere in town, while EB has the PS2 rev for $12.99. Should I go for it or wait until I can find it on the PC?

JM, are you serious? Deus Ex is available everywhere that has PC games.
The only advantage of the PS2 version from what I hear is that the characters have a higher polygon count. They also reworked the interface to be controller-friendly. And they had to break up the levels a bit so there's more loading. Personally, I would try and get the PC version if you can. It won't be any more expensive and you'll get proper mouse/keyboard control.
I wouldn't really consider any genres my favorite but I've definately played some great FPS (Deus Ex, BF1942 (Desert Combat), Half-Life (Firearms), and Unreal Tournament to name a few). I don't care for RTS games much...I suck at them:P Realistically though, I probaly play way more FPS then anything else with RPGs most likely being my second.

I'm not really an FPS fan, but I do enjoy playing the odd FPS occasionally. I do most of my gaming on my own, so I appreciate an FPS with a good single player mode more than one geared towards death matching. Half-Life, Goldeneye 007, Medal of Honor and Medal of Honor: Underground are probably my personal favourite games in the genre.

The only FPS I have liked are:
-GoldenEye
-007: Nightfire
-Perfect Dark
-Time Splitters
-Time Splitters 2 (for the multiplayer, I thought the single player was better in part 1)
-AND METROID PRIME
Besides those games I have absolutely loathed every other FPS I have played.
I dont know if id call it my fav genre but its up there

Gohron: Ugh, I hate desert combat in Battlefeild. I would much rather play the game in the normal pretenses. I don't find anything alluring about it.
Maybe that's because I can't figure out the helicopters, though. I can stay up there for a long while and then all of a sudden it just flips over and I bail out, and then all my passengers die.
