Gamefan's "Graveyard" Games......

I was hoping people who still have their old Gamefans could list the games covered in the Graveyard section.

I only have like 14 issues of Gamefan, and here are the games covered in the Graveyard section from the issues I have.

SMS: Phantasy Star-Nick Rox (Volume 4 Issue 5)

Genesis: Gain Ground-The Judge (Sept. 2000)

SNES: Skyblazer-ECM (Sept. 2000)

Jaguar: Hyper Force, & Battle Sphere-ECM (Oct. 2000)

Sega CD: Dark Wizard-The Judge (Oct. 2000)

Genesis: Ristar & Vectorman-ECM (Nov. 2000)

Saturn: Prikura Daisakusen-ECM (Dec. 2000)

PSX: Tobal 2-Kodomo (Dec. 2000)

I just downloaded Tobal 2 on newsgroups. I've been trying to get that game since 98 or 99, couldnt afford BOTH a mod-chip and import at that time. Is the real game completely in English because the one I downloaded is. I wanna try and beat the quest mode, I could only get so far in the first one.

I don't have any of my back issues of Gamefan on me at the time. Is there anyplace that sells back issues? I remember GameCave did back in the day, lost grips of issues when I let someone borrow some.

I don't remember which issues but they were within the last year of Gamefan's lifespan: Earthworm Jim, Robo Alest, Skullmonkeys.

from what i remember there really werent that many games in the GY section. for some reason it was never a monthly installment and your list probably makes up most of the games.

I think the May 1996 issue had Phantasy Star as the graveyard game.

My Gamefans are all packed away but I remember Halverson doing a Wonder Dog one.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's a Graveyard game? I've never read an issue of Gamefan.

Interestingly enough, I managed to stumble upon Skullmonkeys after the Gamefan tribute. It was a Blockbuster copy, but I still had a good time with it.

SXA, the Graveyard was the retro section, of sorts, for Gamefan.

That Battletoads arcade game was in one of them, I remember.

The reason I'm interested is because somehow Skyblazer slipped by my radar back in the day, and after I read about it in GF, I bought a copy, and found it to be an exceptional game.
I was wondering what other great games I may have missed.

They did Comix Zone at one point. I remember that well because I don't feel Comix Zone was a game worth remembering.

I know the game is quite popular among some, but I couldn't get into it at all. It was a great looking 2D game though.

No, the Japanese one (the only released one) is completely in Japanese.

What's giving you trouble exactly?

You using gems, items and sleeping?

warmpro, I'm a CZ fan, but I see where you're coming from. Sometimes, the game is a blast to play, and other times, it can just drag.

I remember when ECM did the Ristar one, mostly because I had just discovered the game a few months before that Graveyard article and I thought it to be such a cool game.

I don't know what it was about Comix Zone, but it ranks as one of my favorite Genesis games. Great beatem-up stuff, the comic book influence, the good animation, even the cool tunes all add up to one of the best Genesis experiences.

I remember an Axelay one.. also a SuperGrafx Ghouls 'N Ghosts GY. I think that one was in '94, since that issue had the 32X announcement in it. :)

Dracula X was covered, I can check my old issues later on.

They did Rocket Knight Adventures, too, I believe.

I forget which issue it's in, but in the Pre-ECM days of GameFan, there was a special Graveyard section on games that need sequels. All of the editors picked 10 and explained why.

Reading this thread made me dig through my old mags and lo and behold, there was a copy of Issue 3 Vol. 1 from Jan 1993! The Graveyard this issue featured Granzort and Alldynes, both Super Grafx games. Granzort is a side scrolling action game, and Alldynes is apparently a shooter.

Blast from the past for sure.

The issue you're trying to remember is the July 1997 issue. It had Gex 2 and Pandemonium 2 on the cover.

I didn't realize it at the time but now I find it disturbing how the Graveyard section almost entirely consisted of games from the 16-bit era. You would think something called Graveyard would have had some older stuff.

Anyone played Granzort before, is it any good...? I just read the lone review of the game on Gamefaqs, and it seems promising.

Grandzort is okay. I heard it's somehow spun off from Keith Courage. Not a must have by any means, but still kinda cool.

I'll scan some issues in soon.

Like Adol said, it's OK. The manga/anime it's based on is related to the Wataru/Keith Courage stuff, so that's where the main connection comes in. The gameplay similiarities are there, too; scroll in either direction (the first stage has you moving toward the left) and power up into robots.

That being said, it's kind of a blah game and the graphics aren't indicative of what the SuperGrafx can do.. there aren't really any special effects at all. It comes across like a slightly above-average Genesis game. But it's by the Hudson of old, so I pretty much like it anyway. :)

Granzort is probably the least impressive SuperGrafx game.
