Wolfowitz: Iraq war was about oil

The US deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz - who has already undermined Tony Blair's position over weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by describing them as a "bureaucratic" excuse for war - has now gone further by claiming the real motive was that Iraq is "swimming" in oil.

Asked why a nuclear power such as North Korea was being treated differently from Iraq, where hardly any weapons of mass destruction had been found, the deputy defence minister said: "Let's look at it simply. The most important difference between North Korea and Iraq is that economically, we just had no choice in Iraq. The country swims on a sea of oil."

Didn't we do this already?

I expect Paul Wolfowitz will vanish without a trace and never be heard from again.

Its disgusting, its true, and we all knew it six months ago.

Wow. I have no idea why the hell Wolfowitz would admit this. If these reports are credible, that's some serious shit on the administration's face.

Assumptions:

1.) That Paul Wolfowitz's opinion means anything
2.) That oil was the sole reason for the war

I don't agree with either assumption.

After 9/11 Wolfowitz became the most important person in the US with regards to foreign policy.
He together with Rumsfeld molded the neocon ideas and turned them to reality.
He has been the most outspoken voice for millitary action and his power at the moment is unchallenged.

If you don't think Wolfowitz's opinion means anything, you haven't been paying attention. He's a major, if not the biggest, hawk in the administration.
