Seriously, if somebody is to be locked away for life, there is almost no light at the end of the tunnel for them except for what they open up for themselves. Anything more seems excessive and empty. Keep the blood on the hands of the criminal as opposed to the hands of the criminal and the state.

You are right. But giving a person the remainder of his life to either find personal or spiritual redemption should be a basic, irrevokable right, despite the fact that they may have cut that very same right short for someone else.
