Any idea where you got that information? I just find the idea interesting - I believe Japan has something like 5000 more suicides a year than America, despite having less than half the population.

So, I dunno how it makes sense that Tokyo has the same rate as LA or NYC, particularly since Tokyo has significantly more people in it than NYC, right? Wondering if living in Tokyo keeps people alive or something.

You are right, but when life gets you down you must see through the fog and realise that lifes pains only last for a "season".

Better things are ahead, it sometimes comes easily and sometimes not..

The thing for me is this.

I had someone close die of cancer.

I had a friend stabbed to death.

I had a friend die of Aids.

I went through my own problems growing up.


With so many lives taken away in this world I cant feel sorry for those that take their own lives, it still sucks I know..

But life hands you shit sometimes and what do you do..

Do you give up or do you wash your hands and move on?

Yes, I get myself into trouble sometimes by making short comments and not explaining and in the process coming off like a jerk.

Stone: of course it was per-capita, I actually think it was in a textbook on Kurosawa that I learned that, but it was sold last semester.

Also I think as the economic bubble popped the suicide rate in Japan has went up quite a bit in recent years.

NYC 2001: 18.3 per 100,000
JPN 2001: 25.1 per 100,000

However...

JPN 1996: 17.6 per 100,000
While NYC has stayed largely the same.

These things fluctuate, either way it is a tiny percentage that actually off's themselves. American media tends to dramatize stupid shit, I mean a single murder can headline the national news, but veritable genocide in "peripheral" countries gets zero fucking coverage.

Looks like Japan isn't the most suicide prone of the industrialized nations...

I really don't think you can compare national averages between all of the USA and Japan, sociologically speaking, it's apples and oranges.

That's fine, and I'm glad you were able to come out of it. But the point you're missing is that depression is a disease brought on by chemical imbalances in the brain, not an imaginary mindset. Many people have lower than average seratonin levels or other imbalances which leave them predisposed to severe depression. A clinical depression is one that you can't just say "hey, I should be positive and try hard!" to get rid of. It is an incredibly bleak illness which radically affects judgement and perspective to the point where rationality can go out the window, and requires serious and lengthy treatment.

Acting superior like you are is like looking down on someone for dying of SARS because you were able to get over a really bad flu. You can't act like all depressions are the same. That article explained quite clearly how environment and culture can have a radical effect on one's ability to percieve and deal with the illness.

So saying "hey, they're weak, they deserve it!" is still assinine. You're acting like these people are coming from a rational perspective, when the act of killing one's self is inherently irrational. I'll say it again: SEVERE DEPRESSION DEEPLY AFFECTS YOUR ABILITY TO REASON, KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE, AND FEEL THE EMOTION OF HOPE. IT IS NOT THE SAME AS JUST BEING SAD.

So get off your fucking high horse and recognize this for what it is - a killer disease exactly like cancer, which can only be helped through compassion and a willingness to support those going through it, not just telling them to stop being weaklings and stigmatizing them. Unless you had actual suicide attempts, whatever depression you went through was not as severe as what most of these people are dealing with. Be thankful.

One thing to remember is that many Japanese suicides aren't reported as such, since it is seen as shameful for the family. The attending physician often leaves the cause of death blank, or writes some other reason to protect those left behind. That practice is changing now that it's becoming more recognized as a societal problem, but it's still tough to collect accurate figures for that country.
