The JM collection thread (Updated 7-28-04 New Stuff)

Since most of my threads were made before the attach feature was implemented, most of my threads now contain red X's & broken links. I'm gonna take a page from Mr. Dandy & put all my work that I have in digital format in this thread.

If any mods feel this is a waste of bandwidth, let me know & I will delet it.


I'm gonna try to make it in chronological order if I can. You can definately see how my style has changed over time. The First pics are from 1999, leading up to a couple of months ago. I need to borrow the digi cam & get some of my recent work, I haven't taken any pics in at least 3 months.

Also, this isn't complete, there are quite a few paintings that I have sold that I never got pictures of, but this is the best I can do right now.

All exceptional, but Hound, Peasant and Girl 2 are definite favourites.

Soul & Fire, Hound, and Magnet really spoke to me. I also really like Soldier and Darren (I've seen it in person, and I remember the beard!)
Are you trained or self-schooled, this is some really exceptional stuff, if I could afford to buy art, your work would definitely appeal to me.

Soldier is great and Matt Sweet rocks! Do you sell your work or is it something you do for yourself?

Um, a little of both. I sell stuff from time to time, but I don't have anything hanging in public right now. I just paint every night. If someone wants to buy something, the extra cash is always nice.

Great stuff as always JM. Your use of color throughout is brilliant.

My favorite for drawing- "Andrew Wyeth." Wonderful detail and an extremely solid portrait.

Favorite for color and design- "Soul and Fire." Excellent stuff.

All excellent, I like the drawing Andrew Wyeth for all the detail and percision in it. I don't think I could pick a favorite painting though, so many of them are great.. I suppose I would say Peasant because it seems most unusual to me.

Awesome the color looks like an art nuevo[sic] piece. Like an Alphonse Mucha print or something. Good work as usual. Is there supposed to be a fire behind the main figure or a cloud with lightning? If its fire i like the contrast to the small flame in the figure's candle.

I should have mentioned that the title of the piece is Stained Glass II. I am a big fan of stained glass. The outlines divide the elements of the image, much like the leading in a L.C. Tiffany window. The actual subject matter of the girl & her pose ARE influenced by Art Nouveau (Mucha is a personal favorite). Good call Jester! :D

I've not seen your stuff before, and I have to say I'm quite impressed! I love your sense of layout and colors. Excellent stuff. Your Stained Glass pics are my faves, especially II, which is absolutely lovely.

It has been quite a while since I have posted any new paintings. Here is a new one, it is from a series of paintings I'm doing from my grandfather's old photo album. The picture is from 1933 or so, & dates from before he married my grandmother. Both of them have passed away, so no one in the family knows who the people in the album are. They could be relatives, friends or old girlfriends of his. The totaly mystery about who these people are really interests me, it also explains the name of the piece

Two more here. These are the last two things I have done. They are from this red cross swimming instruction book from 1938. All the photos are grainy underwater shots & most of them are damn cool looking. I am going to do a lot of these, since it is always nice to have a large collection of similar pieces.

I really love your work JM, especially your drawings. I really like "bad germans" a lot, the very fist painting you posted rocks the docks. I also like the painting of the hand reaching out for the bird. All great stuff.

I have said Fantastic so many times going through this gallery, I hope it has not lost it's meaning.

I like your use of old photographs, especially old war and newspaper photos. They are great for exploring light and shade, but not posed, so you get the more accurate practice.

Wonderful stuff as usual JM. The two swimming ones both have GREAT compostion and use of value.

Here is a new one. If you can recognize the picture the girl is from, good for you.
The pic I took was truly bad, with LOTS of glare on the wet black oil paint. I reduced the glare in Photoshop, so it has been digitally altered, but it looks a lot more like the real thing this way.

Wow, that's really good. I am really impressed by your work, not even seeing the original pieces. But as I (obviously) have seen this before, wow. :)

I'm sad I didn't find this thread earlier... Your work is wonderful. And self-schooled! I feel cheap about my few months of instruction :sweat:

Hound, Girl 2, Girl 3, the red-cross swimmers and the most recent one (heh) kinda stuck out as the best, to me.

You have some excellent pieces, I'd love to see more and the rest of the different series works. I wish I could paint even a fraction of how well you can.

Nomi, how old are you? 17 or 18? If so, I have nearly 10 years of practice on you. Just keep practicing, your stippling work is very good, keep it up & I'm sure we will be seeing great things from you in the future. As for the others in the series, I was going to take pics of two more swimmer pieces after Girl 4, but the batteries in the camera died. I will have them up on monday or tuesday.

Girl 4 is fantastic JM, I love the setting and her colors.

I know I'm not really your favorite poster around here so I don't know that this means much... but swimmer 2 really stirs something deep and i'm not quite sure what. I think it has something to do with the fact that the face is in shadow, the lighting (or whatever the appropriate term for painting is) is really well done. I don't suppse you could talk about that one a bit? I'm curious about your inspiration and thoughts while creating it.

^ Well, JM has touched yet another, emotionally, with his paintings. That may be one of the greatest compliments an artist can recieve.

Um, If I ever bitched you out about something, don't worry about it, I tend to snap sometimes. I usually end up being a bigger ass than the person who annoyed me. :sweat:

Anyhoo, I hate to say it, but there wasn't a lot of predetermined thought that went on before or during the swimmers. I just had this old book full of great b&w photos of people swimming in 1930's style bathing suits. I really liked the pics & thought they would make a nice series of pieces. I picked photos that had at least some of the head out of the water to get those reflections smearing out of the top of the piece. Once I started on one, I just went at it pretty intensly, finishing each piece in one sitting. I don't think about what I'm doing while I'm doing it. I just thought they would make visually interesting, slightly mysterious paintings. I like subject matter that people can interperet in their own way, rather than having a strict theme or symbolism to my stuff. Sorry there isn't much more than that to tell, but I do appreciate the compliment.

I guess it was really that mysterious quality that caught me, I guess it's the way his face is in shadow and almost seems to flow from the top of the painting, as though the swimmers a sort of water drop, and he's curled in the fetal position (which I'm sure originally was no more than a cannonball) as though in defense of the strange new lanscape that he's floating above. Even though I'm sure these weren't quite what the original pic portrayed, it holds a real meloncholy beauty to me.

You should stare at the stained glass in person. I'm the lucky bastard that jm sold it to. It's a really, really, really awesome piece of work. I'm slowly but surely collecting quite a few of jm's work and appreciate how they make my homestead look. Thanks JM.

Well, I actually got off my ass & started painting again, so I have some new stuff to show.

These are much smaller pieces than I usually do. They are all around 11" X 5" or so. All are Acrylic on paper, & are part of a single piece. They will be mounted on a canvas or piece of wood, I'm not totally sure how I'm going to go about it at the moment.

Are these people really in your family? I like the one of the woman that you did on Doodlebug too.

The first one is my grandfather. All the photos are from an OLD (between 1933-36) photo album of my late Grandfather's. It's from before he met my grandmother. He was originaly from Chicago, so he didn't have any family down here.

We have no Idea who the people in the album are. They could be family, friends or old girl friends as far as I know. I have always wondered who they were, so I thought it would make for an interesting series of paintings.
