some questions for those who work at EB/GameStop

I'm currently looking for a new job, and I'm thinking about going into retail. What better than a videogame store, right? I've read all those retail horror stories, so I know what I'm getting my self into. It's worth a try. Now, if I may ask some questions.

- What was the starting wage?

- How hard is it to actually get a job there?

- I think I once read that someone got fired from EB because he sold some of his games on eBay because he "competed" with EB, is this true? If so, I might have a problem working at EB/GameStop if I sell games at the flea market?

- What's a better place to work? EB or GameStop? Or does it even matter?

I've worked for both. Both suck ass.

Don't work for a place that sells video games if you still plan on being a gamer.

You will hate video games after a while. It happens.

this is true you can and will be fired if they find out your selling stuff on ebay or some where else, ofcourse now they say youll have had to have owned the item for a year before you can sell it
but theyll still be assholes about it

...how does that change any the basis for those that never worked in retail? I mean, people here have played games all their life and never worked at either place and eventuall have began to hate video games after awhile.

heh. what shinobi need to do is work the editorial side as well. THEN he'll truly see the "market/industry" in a new light. ;)

What a bunch of bullshit with them not allowing you to sell games on your own time, that you didn't happen to buy in their store.

I know the Gamestop here starts at 5.50 an hour. Ouch.

And here, it's DAMN hard getting a job in a video game store. EB keeps the same employees, and only has like 5 of them, same with the Gamestop. And when someone leaves / gets fired, I've been told the new position has a way better chance of going to someone's friend, then someone who is actually qualified.

I mean, I've got over three years of retail experience, tons and tons of video game systems and games, and I drop in an application just for the hell of it every 5-6 months, when they tell me "yea, we are definately looking for someone new".

I've never even got called back, but it dosen't surprise me.
