Coolest Thing I Have EVER Seen!!

Well I have decided that next summer I am going to go to a shaolin temple kinda deal to learn martial arts for 2 months! It seems about the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life. You go out in a remote China location and do all sorts of training and such. I can hardly wait, it took forever to convince my mom to let me go because she is so worried about me, but a cousin is going this summer.

You can check it out at www.shaolins.com and tell me what you think. It seems like a tight schedual but I would be dedicated enough to do it. For me it wouldnt be so much about learning martial arts as it would be finding peace within myself and training.

Although its a bit pricey (2 months will cost a little over $2000) I think this is one of the greatest things I have ever seen! I have already been planning (assuming next summers trip goes well) to go for at least a year after I graduate from highschool. What do you guys think about this?

Two months is quite a commitment, however it seems like it could be a very fulfilling venture, if you are dedicated enough.

I would research this as much as possible, get references, and try and talk to someone who has been through the experience.

A Hummer, some vicodin and now some kung fu lessons at a Shaolin temple in the rugged lands of China?

Hey guys, my parents are making me go to Krefield Germany for the summer to work in a beer garden. I have to live with 3 sweedish girls in a small house across the street from it. Sucks because it doesn't have broadband and I won't beable to take my H2 there. I guess it's ok that they're buying me an Audi TT to get by while I'm there. What do you guys think?

Learning Shaolin Gong-Fu can be very rewarding. Northern Chinese fighting styles, especially Shaolin styles are internal-based systems, and also "soft". You will learn a great deal about balance and graceful movement. Shaolin forms tend to have more of a "flow" to them- they are performed rather fast, and with little-to-no "stops" like in Karate.

Be prepared for VERY achy knees- Shaolin boxing uses very deep stances and movement patterns. I suggest you practice doing very deep Horse Stances for a few weeks before going- if you want to be better prepared for the leg vigors.

One point: traditional Chinese boxing is not useful in a real-life street fight unless you have many, many years of dedicated experience with it. Many of the movements and tactics (in the hands of a beginner) are easily countered by BASIC brawling tactics.

Thanks a bunch zerodash, but I have just a few problems :)

What exactly is "deep" horse staces? is that like going low to the ground while on all 4s?

And, I have some troubles with my knees (at rondom times) from doing stupid stuff as a young child (jumping from top of the couch right onto my knees on the floor) is there anything I could do to help this, or am I doomed to just deal with the pain?
