Canada Day...yeah.
What exactly does this glorious day commemerate? The day that America vomitted all over the ocean and spawned you Cretins?
The day we became a country.
Kinda like your independence day, but without the fighting and bloodshed.
And aliens, and having the place saved by will smith, jeff goldblum and a shitty powerbook.
Oh, Happy Canada Day too!
Well maybe you guys should piss off some big-name countries and get some recognition.
C'mon! Be a badass for once!

Take that!
We would, but that would interupt international trade, relations and hockey tournaments.

Have at you!
If Sir John A were here, he'd be slashing at MechDeus with a broken whiskey bottle.
YEAH!
More like TALKING to me about a broken whiskey bottle.
Sir John A. was an incredible man. He once took out 3 drunken axe-weilding lumberjacks, a black bear and 2 bank robbers all at once using only voice nunchuks. Ph33r the TALKING!Quote:

Our current PM has been known to personally knock out burglers with household furnishings and strangle protesters, all without a trace of liquour in his body. Who knows what he'd do after downing a bit of scotch!
Besides, what's up with this whole business of July 4 being called "independence day"? Your country wasn't independent until 1781, on some other date to boot. You need to rename it "Jefferson Reading a Piece of Paper Day".
You'd think a country built on TALKING IT OUT would understand the importance of how something rolls off the tongue gracefully.Quote:

Of course I have. He has a HUGE MOUTH built for TALKING.
...Alright, no, I actually haven't.
He's basically the worst-spoken world leader in the history of world leaders, and will remain so until somebody elects Pee Wee Herman or Dikembe Mutombo. In udder word, 'e is no master of de voice nunchuk.
This website can translate anything into his unique language, if you can get it to work:

Update: my parents are now in Canada. Good, eh?
I have now visited a new part of Canada - the Laurentians. :)
I went up there on holiday for 4 days or so with Icepop, my parents, and sister. We rented a nice little chalet on a lake in the mountains. We went canoeing and swimming, saw frogs and trout, relaxed, etc. It was really really nice. I highly recommend it. Next time I'd like to see it in the winter.
Sounds nice. I might visit there sometime.

Heh, the last I went skiing was in grade 5. I was psyched. How hard could it be, I thought Long story short, when pushed off the only I saw for twenty minutes straight was white, blue, white, blue, white, blue, white, brown!
I want to go to Blue Mountain sometime.
 I've been skiing since I was little but I can definitely identify. Sommersaults with skis is very ... interesting. :p
Where is Blue Mountain?
I would like to go do some skiing in the Québec City area. There are some great hills around there. I love Mont St. Anne. I also really like Jay Peak and Whiteface in the States.
I think Blue Mountain was near Quebec up north. A nice Chalet from what I heard. I was supposed to go there for New Years with a buddy and stuff but that didn't pan out.
It sounded nice.
Seems like it's in Ontario actually?
http://www.bluemountain.ca/
Ooops.
It's not even close to Quebec... fuckers lied.
Hey, fellow Canadians... Somebody suggested that I ask my question in this thread <shrugs> It's about custom fees from ordering online.

Anybody has a clue? Thanks. :)
Check this out Morrigan:

Marking something as a gift does not preclude it being charged duty. I found out the hard way as well. I got charged duty on an expensive package my parents sent me from the US and I was incredibly pissed off.
I have found that it does not always work out to those exact regulations listed on the website. It seems to be that the limit is closer to $100 than the $60 they mentioned, but maybe I just got lucky a few times?
It's easier to get around the rules when you are receiving something from someone you know personally. If you are ordering from a big company you might get stuck - unless you speak to someone personally who is taking care of your order. They could always devalue the goods or remove any shrinkwrapping so they are not "new".
Anyway, good luck.
Well my order would be less than $60 anyway, so hopefully they will accept to mark it as a gift...
Thanks for your tips!
I've never had a package under $60u get charged duty, even if they technically could have... so I'd take my chances with that.
Even if they did charge duty, it would be minimal.
:)
You may want to see if they can mark the price as something artificially low (like $5). I've been charged duty on packages that were declared at far less than $60, so it's good to be safe. And the "gift" thing is a must!Quote:

The actual duty isn't a lot, but you'll also get $5 or so in service charges from the government, which can really add up. Sometimes they're more than the duty itself.
And, whatever you do, DO NOT have anything sent to you via UPS, Fedex, or any other courier service. Even if the package isn' dutiable, they will charge you at least $25 in "brokerage fees" and other rubbish.
Good luck! Customs dodging can be a pretty involved business sometimes ;)
Yeah, I know about UPS, they're total rip-off! I had emailed AN yesterday and I just got the reply:
Well, sounds like it shouldn't be too bad. I'll wait for a reply from Gamemusic just in case (if they are certain there won't be any custom charges I might go with them), but I'll probably go with AN. :)Quote:
The customs charges seem to be at random. While in most cases we do place items as gifts we are required to place the correct price on the forms. Import taxes seem to be chosen at random intervals so there is no way to say if your
package will be charged or not.
Thanks again everyone.
Some places actually pay the duty for you.
For example, EBworld.com does. Unfortunately with them it's not worth it unless you are buying something like a full console because they charge $15u to ship a single game. :(
EBworld also ships with Fedex, so even though you don't pay duty, you still end up paying the brokerage fee, which usually costs more than the shipping charge.
I used to order electronic parts from Digikey, which was perfect - duty was included, and they sent everything EMS which meant no extra service charges at all.
Will Canada have a new 11th province somewhere in the sun? Maybe... maybe...
* MP backs lobby for a sunny 11th province
* Canadians for a tropical province
* A place in the sun
Time to send a letter the right honourable Gilles Duceppe. Yes, that's my MP. :o
Hmm - that'd be like Hawaii but Canadian :D. You know, they should have picked Turks & Caicos instead of Newfoundland like the did last time, eh?
This news still seems like an April Fools joke to me.
And Newfoundland rocks! :p
Maybe I'll move to Canada after all!

Does anyone know any good Cider or Ale brands?
And for the record, I don't really care what anyone says about the french. Women get 20 bonus points with me if they are closely related or are, French. Don't know why, but thats the way it is.
Canada would find a way to turn the Bahamas into a ski resort. :p
Yep. They're both Algonquin names, derived from their word for river.Quote:

IronPlant, ales I like include: Smithwicks, Harp, McEwans, Sleemans.
I'm not familiar with many Cider brands. I do know that Guinness + Cider = Black Velvet and that's yummy though. :)

Alright, you win this round!
When I say Cider I mean a more classical meaning of the word, and not Cider in the form its typically seen today. I'm talking about a hard/alcoholic Cider and not a slightly old apple juice sold often times around christmas. I'm not saying that's what you thought but I felt like clarifing for the sake of the baord.Quote:

I've never seen bottled bear. Sounds good though.Quote:

Yeah, typically you only see bottled Koala bear. But don't let the animal rights people catch you drinking that.
And Maui is the 12th. When I went there last winter, I thought I'd wandered into a suburb of Vancouver by mistake.Quote:

Yes, I know. That was an attempt at a subtle joke (probably too subtle!).Quote:

Alexander Graham Bell was Canadian by the time he figured the telephone out - his family immigrated to Brantford, ON.
Baseball is also Canadian, BTW. Football might be, but it's debatable.
I wasn't sure if you were kidding or not, since I'm alomst positive baseball is American. Abner Doubleday is usually credited with the game, although recent evidence suggests baseball was around at least 50-60 years before him.Quote:

As for football, Walter Camp codified it at Rutgers university, but the first game was between Rutgers and McGill, so I guess you could say there was some invlovement. But really, for that first game they were just playing soccer while carrying the ball and knocking each other over.
The first recorded baseball game was played in Canada - somewhere in Southern ON or New Brunswick (can't really remember). It was probably around long before then, since there's nothing that suggests that this game was a novelty for the players.Quote:

did the US invent acting like we own everything or being assholes politically? DO WE HAVE ANYTHING?
There is a lot of controversy about where baseball was "invented". I think that the official line is that it was invented in Hoboken New Jersey, as opposed to Cooperstown. People in New Jersey certainly seem to believe it was invented there and supposedly that's what the evidence points to. I don't know if they made it "official" like they recently did with hockey though (the IIHF decided last winter that the first organised hockey game was played in Montréal).Quote:

Anyway, there are people who say that baseball originated in Canada (Québec?) and that forms of the game where being played here long before it was "invented" in NJ or NY, but I have no idea if there is any credability or proof there.
and we care why?
I'm going to be headed to Montreal with five other guys next weekend for a Soul Calibur 2 tournament. We're arriving Saturday morning and the tourney will be that day, so we're goin to have the entire night to do whatever in the city. Any Montrealers want to suggest some spots to hit up while we're there?
We're leaving Sunday afternoon, so anything that can get me plastered would be good. :)
Depends what places you usually like to go to ... bars? clubs? lounges? Most tourists go to Crescent street so don't go there. Go to St. Laurent and I'm sure you'll find something great to do. :)Quote:
