Cool Spot

Released on the Genesis and SNES, Cool Spot is a platformer featuring the now-defunct 7-Up Spot guy. Suprisingly, CS was actually a very solid little game that featured very nice graphics, slick animation, and an excellent score (by Tommy Talirco?).

The mission in each stage is to collect point chips and rescue the other Spots trapped in each stage. Your only weapon is the soda fizz that Spots are somehow able to generate out of thin air and shoot at foes like mice and crabs.

I still enjoy some quality time with CS from time to time, and the Genny version seems to be the better of the two.


Anyone fans of this little 16-bit platformer?

I think the game is alright, although flawed in many ways, such as level design, the way the camera swings around, lame enemies, etc. It's a cool little game from David Perry's Past.

And to quote DacaZ, since he isn't here to say it himself.

Cool Spot was the best of the Dave Perry platformers.

Cool Spot > Global Gladiators > Aladdin > Earthworm Jim

I'va always wanted to play it, that and Avoid the Noid for the NES. Though I think I remember hearing that Noid sucked and Cool Spot was great.

It was okay but not as cool as Coca Cola Kid or Pepsiman. ;)

The Saturn version had an awesome soundtrack.

NOTHING is a cool as Pepsiman...:D

I love this game, it's probably my favorite licensed platformer ever, and the game is actually a blast to play, and still looks damn good today. Pepsiman does rule just a TAD more though, which with Rent-a-Hero being given his moveset and all in Fighter's Megamix.

Dave Perry`s platformers were ok back in the day (mainly because back then the genre was so full of drek) but now they all play very poorly. Cool Spot is no different, nice character though.

I think Aladin was a bit better then Cool Spot as well. But EWJ is well above both.

Tommy T's Soundtrack's are so underrated on these boards.

Skeleton Warriors is a soundtrack so good, it deserve's a better game.

Cool Spot was awesome though, Sega CD version for life.

As usual (when it's not a political discussion), I agree with Sidez. Perry always got way more credit than I thought he deserved. He's never made a game that I would give anything more than a 7/10. If I want a licensed platformer, I'll take Capcom's Disney games over Cool Spot any day.

I agree that Perry gets too much credit although saying that the platform genre was full of drek back then is a little odd considering how mascot games are far worse today with all the scavenger hunt crap.

But I must say the PC version of MDK kicks ass. It's more fun than any of Perry's 16-bit games and I think it's better than Bioware's sequel.

i busted this out a couple weeks ago for the first time ever and it failed to grab me. of course, i didn't give it the benefit of the doubt, really, because it's a soda licensed platformer. but playing it for a few minutes it just seemed to be a jump 'n' collect the coins affair with middling level design and gameplay mechanics.

I think this is one platformer that has held up well. The animation is great and the levels have awesome detail. I prefer the Snes version due to the better music and brighter color palette but the Genesis version is definitely no slouch either.
