Futurama
/me hides from Atlas :p
Like Bender, I enjoy robot porn, watching TV, drinking alcohol, and am afraid of can openers. I am also fluent in Penguinese.
Bah.
Family guy is a thousand times more clever and smart than Futurama will ever be.
I like Futurama and all, but let's be serious here people...
It's a pretty tough call, actually.
Family Guy has the edge, though. I really didn't like the later episodes of Futurama as much as the first couple of seasons. Too much story, not enough funny.
I love them both, but I think Futurama is the better made show. I love just about all of the characters on Futurama, the music and especially the animation. It's really funny at times with alot of clever jokes and some stand out episodes like "Luck of the Fry" and the time skip episode.
Family Guy can be downright hilarious at times, Quagmire is fucking hysterical. It's not for everyone though as it's references are aimed at a certain crowd and it get's alot of it's attention from it's shock value. There are more than a fair share of notorious Family Guy scenes. Plus, after watching the DVD, the animation can get pretty sloppy at times.
Best hour of programing on TV now though.
Futurama is brilliant, Family Guy is garbage.
Stewie is one of the greatest characters ever.
Anyone who doesn't like Stewie prefers the company of the same sex. Like, um, icepop. :p
Futurama- greatness.
Family Guy- blatent Simpsons rip-off with shock value as it's best assest. Seriously, when watching Family Guy, I like to play a game called, "spot what Simpsons did first". 1 minute into it- Simpsons did it. 2 minutes laters- Simpsons did it. 20 seconds later- Simpsons did it. You get the point. Hell, the best character, Stewie, is just Mr. Burns in Maggies body. I really like the show, though, it just seems Fox wanted more Simpsons to go around. Remember the ads for Malcom in the Middle?- "It's a real life Simpsons!"
WHile I like them both, I will go with Futurama. I love characters, setting, sense of humor, Bender is great character, and it had higher production values. While Family Guy is fun show as well, there are plenty of times when its comes out just like meh,
Um...I like King of the Hill
Futurama
Family Guy by far. I've always thought Futurama kinda sucks actually.
Not only is The Family Guy better than Futurama, it's better than The Simpsons.
The Family Guy was dark, edgy and subtle with thier humor. That's how I like my comedy.
The Simpsons are more about playing with conventions. Which are funny as well.
But it seems like every episode of The Family Guy there'd be one joke that would baffle me about how it got by the network censors.
That really didn't happen with The Simpsons and certainly not with the same frequency.
When Brian was talking about getting a job in the Porn industry and said something like 'I don't want to sound like a prude, I mean...I've licked my fair share of peanut butter in my day...'. Part of me died from laughing so hard.
And when Peter says his favorite story in the bible was when Jesus swallowed the puzzle piece and The Man In The Yellow Hat had to take him to the hospital? HA HA!
I don't wanna start a cartoon holy war. If you disagree with me, that's fine. It's just my personal preference and I don't judge anyone based upon thiers.
I don't think either is really a stand up, fantastic show, but if I had to choose, I'd go with futurama, because not only is it funny, and really well made (Great production values), but it's jokes and story lines are very clever and well thought out, plus the show just has a lot of heart.
Family Guy has some laughs, but it lacks substance. I also don't like how they do those stupid flash back jokes that always follow the same formula.
"Remember when I <Insert stupid remark here>?"
"This is worse then the time I <Insert stupid remark here>."
*Show stupid flashback sequence*
And they'll do this over and over again.
Family Guy gives me more consistent laughs, as nearly every episode is funny as hell. Whereas Futurama is a bit more hit or miss, but when it hits.... whew, awesome stuff. I'll narrowly give the nod to Family Guy.
Are we voting on which one is more overrated? That's a pretty close race.
*runs*
One of the most fun parts about watching Family Guy is spotting all the references.
They had a Trainspotting reference for God sakes! I just thought that was awesome. The writers really do their homework in EVERY episode.
True, they do that alot. But it works everytime.Quote:

Family Guy has that "sit around with friends and quote lines from the show until you die laughing" value that The Simpsons had, and that is something that I hold dearly. While I can watch a whole episode of Futurama and be pleased, there won't be any standout moments, and thus, the show just doesn't stick in my head very long.
wow. i thought family guy would kill, no contest. I never got into Futurama.
Anyone see the banned episode "Wish Upon a Weinstein?" That shit is really funny, and I think it's going to be on the Season 3 FG disc.
Futurama.
The videogame episode alone is enough to renew it for endless seasons.
Family Guy is funny, hell its hysterical, but sometimes it feels like I'm being blugendoned with things I can't let myself laugh at.
Futurama is an excellent show, but Family Guy was way better. Family Guy has that smart, satirical humor that the Simpsons wish it had. Only show that rivals it is South Park.
Are you talking about the one where they go "inside" the Internet. If so, I agree that that bit was hysterical.Quote:

There was also a video game episode in "Anthology of Interest" (Part 1) I think. The one where they end up playing a giant game of space invaders. Cameos include Pac-man, Ms. Pac Man, DK, Mario, Qbert, and that dude from Robotron (I think that's him). Really funny episode.
I would have to go with Futurama on this one. Although Family Guy is a great show, to me, many episodes start off real strong but towards the end turn to poo.
stewie is reason enough to put family guy above nearly everything else.
Oh oh! Play that sad walking away song from the incredible hulk!
HEY! HEY EVERYONE! WATCH ME! WATCH ME!
/me hitchhikes
Family Guy for reals.
Family Guy > Futurama, though they are both excellent shows.
fam guy by a nose. futurama is good, but i feel family guy's humor more.
Well, I know people vote for Futurama because of the production value. It looks good, the music is nice and there is an actual story... but to me, it really isn't all that funny. I mean, I'm not saying that it isn't funny at all... that 80's video game tribute had me rolling.
Sure, Family Guy isn't the most wholesome show, but it's fucking hilarious. I'm not watching the show to see character development, I'm watching because I want to die laughing. Sure, there are bombs once in a while, but the laugh factor for this show exceeds Futurama tenfold.
And screw that "same family sitcom/bite off Simpsons" excuse....
If thats the case, you can say that Simpsons bit off The Flintstones and Jetsons. Or any live action family sitcom for that matter. Whoever can get job done most effectively, they will earn my viewership.
Family Guy.
Futurama is soo much better.
Really close race, get some more people in here. I also agree that the "Simpsons did it first" is a weak argument. I would also like to infuriate it's fans by saying that they shouldn't make any more new Simpsons episodes. Need to end the pain ASAP.
South Park dedicated a whole episode to the fact that The Simpsons have practically done everything there is to be done. Everyone knows this.
And Family Guy bites off of The Simpsons no more than Futurama anyway.
When did the need for prime-time cartoons to be satire rise? Trey Park and Matt Stone: "Yeah, we're getting noticed because of our satire." Al Jean: "We're aiming for a good satire this episode." Entertainment Weekly: "Nothing reaches that level of Simpsonsian satire."Quote:

The writers need to learn to make sure their jokes are original and funny, rather than try to become bland social documents.
Everyone knows that life sucks and comedy is derived from sucky things. There is a fine line between a good joke, and a sucky one. Satire tends to be easier to do too.
Ooo, tough choice. I like both shows almost equally, but I'd have to say Family Guy edges out Futurama by a hair. I'm glad to see both shows are really close on the poll.
Ha!
You Futurama wanksters can eat it!
Clever? No, groundbreaking, yes. Futurama has jokes that are more developed and clever in its episodes then Family Guy does. Futurama has jokes in it that some people probably wouldn't even understand, just like the Simpsons.Quote:

Family Guy is a great show, don't get me wrong, but there's nothing clever about it. It's a racist, edgy, bigotry inflated show and there was nothing like it before. Everything in the episodes that is funny is more slapstick or spoof. Nothing wrong, but nothing too clever about it.
Just different.
I voted for Futurama, because I'm a Futurama fan. Has anybody seen the one where Zoidberg and the others were going back in time? (growing in reverse) so they were getting younger and he would revert to his different stages in life?
Hilarious.
"Yeah, like you don't need ALL of your blood!" Zoidberg
"HEY! I was hating on Zoidberg before hating on Zoidberg was cool!" Bender
"PEW! That's the saltiest thing I've ever tasted! And I once at a great big heaping bowl of salt!" Fry
--
"Lifting area all clear?" Amy
"All clear!" Fry
"Ready to hoist!" Amy
"Ready" *salutes* Fry
Crane comes down directly on Amys head.
True. Some episodes of Futurama can totally miss their mark, much like the Simpsons of recent years. I have both box sets and the more Family Guy I watch, the more plain and brainlessly apparent their jokes become.Quote:

Most are still funny. That speedracer skit is classic on its show.
Family Guy is anything but subtle, it's blunt. That's what makes it so funny:Quote:

The Simpsons have actually made fun of their borderline plagiarist ways in the Ichy and Scratchy bankrupt episode.Quote:

Family Guy.
It's impossible to make a show nowadays without biting the Simpsons in some form. Comedy has changed because of the Simpsons, but Futurama has a ton of unique episodes and jokes never done before in the episode.Quote:

"The boy, sir?" Kiff
"You. You lay out my formal shorts." Zap.
Or Branigans law:
"We all know the only way to deal with a female adversary is to seduce her. We are sure she's a girl this time, right?" Zap
I want to make a Futurama appreciation thread. But I'm not trying to devalue Family Guy at all, it has its funny moments as well.
"I have an escape plan! We can escape out if you bend the hatch off of this steam pipe!" Fry
*Bender bends hatch off and steam billows through.
"No good, it's full of steam!" Fry
In the next scene both fry and Bender are wearing towels and having a steam. Classic.
At the end of that episode it was awesome:
"So, in the end we saved a COUPLE of animals, and Leela got lucky. Mission accomplished."
"WE'RE HEROES!!!" Fry yells energetically.
Like what? The ones you quoted? I fail to see any jokes in Futurama that are hard to understand.Quote:

And Simpsons jokes were never hard to understand either. Unless you're like 10 years old.
As for Family Guy being clever - you obviously haven't heard Brian or Stewie speak, nor have you caught the countless references to countless number of things that just blend seemlessly into the show. If that's not clever, I don't know what is.
Honestly, the fact that Family Guy is clever is practically that - a fact.
See above. You can be edgy and clever. Like South Park.Quote:

I've never laughed at anything harder than Family Guy...
Well maybe the lost in time episode of Sealab, but that's it.
Futurama doesn't hold a candle to Family Guy, at least when it comes to laugh-value.
No, none of them were. Small things like the passifists of the Ghandi nebula, and cultural references in the Simpsons. None of them are standout, but they provide a chuckle.Quote:

Like what? All of the jokes mentioned above are clever and fresh. Family guys jokes aren't typically clever. He's the big dumb ofe to a T.
Something like the forced mating joke when Earth is invaded in Futurama is clever because the punchline happens twice. In Family it's joke, move on, something funny occurs, move on, flash back, move on, etc.
The most clever joke I've heard out of Family Guy was when Peter had plastic surgery and said:
"If I can't come in with my son because he's too fat then you leave me no choice but to just come in by myself." That's pretty clever, but, again, the joke lies more in his complete bigotry and insensitivity.
Whoa, let's get something straight. Fox fucked BOTH of these shows over.Quote:

Well I questioned the fact that they were hard to understand, not that they weren't clever (though I still don't think they're very clever). They're funny, just not "clever," per se.Quote:

There's so many times that I go through an episode of Family Guy and say "Wow, I can't believe they actually thought of that." Some of the stuff is just so obscure and off-beat. It's like the writers are writing for themselves, to make themselves laugh, and it just happens to work. Like they really don't give a shit what everyone else thinks. I like that.
Well then you and me obviously have very different concepts of "clever" (as if that wasn't apparant already) because I don't find that very clever. At least not as clever as some other stuff.Quote:

Oh my god.
Futurama is so much better than family guy. I've got to be quick, so I'll get into my arguement a bit later, but its jokes are more clever and the cast is much better.
Personally, I think Stewie is crap. Peter owns that show.
oh, and Futurama has so many obscure references through out that its not funny. just listen to the audio commentary on the dvd's.

That's not clever, that's openly blunt though. I agree, it's hilarious, it's just not clever. Clever would be going around a joke with words, without an openly hard punchline to find. What you're describing is some solid scenario comedy, but for every clever joke in Family Guy you get 10 slap stick or flashback jokes that are funny.Quote:

But in Futurama you get more jokes that are worded and clever, some that some people wouldn't understand unless they understood certain things. That's clever, and not something everyone would get, and something you have to watch 2 or 3 times to understand. (the Ghandi nebulas passifists is the example I gave, because it's mentioned as an underthought in the introduction of Zap Branigan)
??? I'm not denying the existance of these clever pieces in the show. Infact I'd like you to refresh my memory with a few. Clever only has one meaning; mentally quick and bright. I don't find anything in Family Guy mentally quick. I find most of their jokes obvious or insane.Quote:

That's what makes the show so good, but I enjoy a more wordy style of comedy, which is why Futurama is the king to me.
It's funny too because the whole commentary is so mellow and it seems like most find fart jokes funny as opposed to wordy.Quote:

Look at my avatar: family guy.
Because Trey Parker and Matt Stone did it and it was a success. Not many shows are really successful at it I'll admit, but Parker and Stone have two of the wryest senses of humor in entertainment. Although Family Guy isn't quite as wry, it still has a very acute, sardonic humor in between the dick and fart jokes.Quote:

"No...now we're getting ready to go to the part--"
*Peter pushes her down the stairs*
I almost died when I saw that. I can't believe they could show that.
I guess the show has a bit of both then. Yes, many of the jokes are blatant and coarse (Peter) but I think there's just as many that are smart and witty (Brian and Stewie). And like I said, I always get a kick outta the little references that always appear in the show. I guess I'm a sucker for that.Quote:

I don't think putting jokes to text really does them justice. "Road to Rhode Island" is a really good episode I think, as is "Peter, Peter, Caviar Eater," and pretty much anything from the third season. Especially the one where Brian gets addicted to coke. Check them out if you care to.
But uh, we're probably gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. ;)
I guess so. I'm not saying you can't like it, because it's obvious that Family Guy rocks. It's just a different kind of humor. Stewies attempt on his mothers life and references towards pop culture are very open and his attempt on his mom are slapstick.
I enjoy it, but I still believe Futurama is the king for me. I just saw the series finale tonight on fox. :(

Yes. It's one of the ending ones where you find out Nibbler is the smartest animal in the universe and lives for many eons.
Oh, very cool. This ep better make it out to DVD, like soon. Or Fox should re-show it.
They are showing Futurama at 7 anyway. What else would they show at 7. Nobody watches TV then anyway...
I only caught it tonight because of a barbeque I was having.
For all that care. Futurama Volume 2 has been moved up to August, not September anymore.
Family guy. Although best Adult Swim show is Aqua Teen.
Nothing is comparable to The Simpsons.
Well, my local Fox affiliate showed True Lies instead of Futurama, the Simpsons, and anything that anyone would actually WANT to watch. Good to see the Futurama Volume 2 set get moved up. Thanks for the info.
Family Guy
Is that the one where everyone is made stupid by alien brains but they have no effect on Fry because he's already really stupid.Quote:

Best episode out of both shows I've ever seen:
The cast of Futurama is thrown into an alternate dimension where they thing the original cast are all evil!
At the end when they're pulling the universes into their own box..classic!
I listened to this episode while I was in the car(tv channel on the radio), and it sounded quite funny.
While I do like Family Guy, I dont get many of its jokes, nor I find them all that funny. Great show, but not as raving great as many here say.
Futurama. I own both of the boxes, watched them both multiple times, but as much as I love the Family Guy characters, I like the stupidity of the jokes in Futurama better.
Futurama by a loooooooooooong shot.
Although I'm a bit biased against FG because it replaced Home Movies on the Adult Swim lineup.
No, although that's an awesome episode too. They get Hermies.Quote:

A little note for folks, both shows will now be shown on TBS starting this Monday. Futurama will air at 2 PM eastern time, while Family Guy will be on at 2:30 PM eastern time. Both shows will still air on Adult Swim as well. Either way, the Turner networks, or whoever owns them all now, and fans, win.
Has there ever been an episode of Futurama where the characters sing? All the songs in Family Guy kick ass.
In the episode "Hell is other robots" there is a little musical part at the end. And some mad hard drive scratchin' too!
Yeah... but even I will admit as an adamant Futurama fanboy that it wasn't all that great.
Meh, I thought it was entertaining. I don't watch much FG so I haven't seen/heard any of the songs 'cept for the opening.
The person who plays Leela has a nice singing voice. :)
That was one of my favorite songs. Futurama doesn't have many songs though.
Didn't the woman who does the voice for Leela play Peg on Married With Children?Quote:

Yes, Katey Segal is her name.
They did a comedic rib on her in one episode about married with children. Leela got 'married' to another guy who had 5 - 6 wives, all on the same planet, hiding from one another.
Pretty good episode. The place was booby trapped and the whole thing was Fry trying to get through a feild without being caught. Every five minutes one of them would have to free him.
Last week I watched episode of FG, where Peter met Death, and man, it was a great one. I wish more of FG was like that.
Haha, thats easily my favorite Family Guy episode.
oh, and about the musical numbers in futurama, they had a big song and dance routine in "How Hermies requisitioned his groove back", and I'm sure there are others I can't remember off the top of my head.
Don't be. This sunday they had bumpers them seemed to hint new Home Movies epps were coming. There have been rumors flying around as such as well.Quote:
