Straigth off this months PCGamer cover cd comes Monolith's demo for their upcoming action based on the Tron movie from 20 years ago. The Tron 2.0 demo features a Light Circle tutorial where you several AI controlled opponents in a 4 way duel in the Conscripts Duel Arena. After the tutorial you can get on the internet and battle it out online. The full Corrupted Sector map is included, playable over LAN or the net with up to 16 teams.

Screw this, I'm using Fileplanet. I have my ways.

I've downloaded it, but I think I'll need to get an accelorator like Geforce 4 to play it. I don't have any problems with memory or processor speed.

This runs suprisingly well, I wasn't expecting such a nice steady framerate (as opposed to Star Wars Galaxies). Unfortunately, the lag ruins any precision and skill the disc tossing would have, but it's still pretty damn fun. As for the lightcycles, they're cool and all but having so many excellent homebrew games that do the exact same thing kinda take away from it. It is well done and the speed control and powerups do give it a different kind of edge then most fanmades.

Now, who wants to play me in some disc-tossing?

If it isn't a complete and total slideshow on my machine, I'm there.

After a bit more play, the side-by-side driving speed of the lightcycles makes this play completely different then any of the homebrews. I'm guessing what they went for here was to recreate the effect in the movies of the cycles speeding past and then falling behind as they drove next to each other. They way it works is that if a cycle is driving next to anothers wall, it creates a speed boost. So if you're in the lead and aren't actively moving in to block off the opponent they can shoot right past and cut you off. Dangerous indeed.

I do wish there was a quick look for the sides, although I'd imagine that'll be implemented in the full version. The first-person locked view is my favorite, but leaves me unable to see to either side if anyone is closing in, whereas the manual camera is slippery and fairly unwieldy.

And I'm on a friggin' P3 600 mhz with a GeForce 256. This means that everyone who has viewed this thread must download the demo. Granted, I need to run low-detail, and the FPS is a bit low in Disc Arena, but it's playable.

Anyway, so far, it's pretty cool. The disc portion, at least. Haven't been able to use the block, yet, and now that I read the freakin' manual, I learn about what ctrl does. Handy enough.

Haven't been able to play a light cycle game, due to the ping restrictions, but I'm sure I'll find one soon.

We need some TNL Tron action.

Just played some 1v1 lightcycle with a local.

One word: speed.

Armagetron is fast, but not this fast. Using the Turbo Curse in those green sectors while dodging the moving tower things? Whoa.

I can now see why pings of under 80 or LAN play are suggested.

Is it good? I might give this a spin.

I like it, so far.

Deflecting discs = awesome, and the light cycle portion is great (As MechDeus said, though, quick-looking would help. I wonder if the Lithtech engine has a scripting system that even remotely resembles Quake's...).

On another note, I figured ctrl-fire would deflect, but I guess it's a melee attack. Anyone know?

Yeah, it's a melee strike. Utterly pointless in that version of multiplayer, except when you can activate the disc in the waiting room and smack each other around.

I personally haven't been able to deflect any discs yet, mainly because of bad ping. Some dedicated servers would be nice...

wow, that's essentially the same computer i have. maybe i'll download it after all.

I just discovered that holding the fire button down allows you to curve your disc. Awesome. This makes it much easier to smack your opponent when the disc is returning to you.

Also, it seems that when your disc is deflected, you will take damage. At least, that's what my past two victims have shown me countless times.

This is really growing on me.

Damn, I want this game. I didn't think there would be a demo so soon.

Can you fight bots outside of the tutorial part or just people online? I'm asking because the only computer I have access to that might be able to run this game doesn't have internet access.

There are bots in the Lightcycle portion, but not in the Disc Arena.

I wish there was at least one stable server for me to ping under 100 for...

But alas, there is not.

It's in the options. Check mouse sensitivity.

How the hell do you throw your disc? I played a game of disc-tossing and was just basically a sitting duck. I checked the controls to make sure I was hitting the fire button, tried holstering/unholstering my disc and still nothing happened.

Otherwise the game seems pretty cool...I'd just like to be able to play it right.

Every third match I've been in begins with me saying "press 1 and click to equip your disc". :)

I'm in the same boat. I have an HP with a Celeron 2 GHZ processor on a 82845 board, that come equiped with intel extreme graphics with 64MB of memory. I'm using Direct X 9.0a and I still get a message that I need direct X 9.0a compatability and a graphics card that supports hardware TnL.

Have you tried new drivers for the video card from Intel?

Yes I have. I guess the chip does'nt support hardware TnL, which I'm guessing is texture and lighting.


My sorry ass HP pavillion does'nt support an AGP slot but has 2 PCI slots. The Geforce 4 with PCI support requires a minimum 300 Watt power supply and the HP comes with a 200 Watt power supply. The guy at Fry's Electronics told me that it's very hard to get an alternative power supply that will fit in a HP, Gateway or Dell computer.

Try a Radeon 8500 LE with 128MB RAM. I've got an 8500 LE with 64MB RAM and the multiplayer demo runs great -- and on a 2nd gen (Thunderbird) Athlon 1400MHz chip with 256MB PC133 RAM. You can get a 64MB card for around $65 and the 128MB card for around $90.

Never buy a PCI video card anymore. They are just the AGP cards with a PCI connector. A good PCI card has texture loading optimized for a PCI bus. A Voodoo 5 PCI, for example, will put all the textures into video RAM, but a PCI nVidia card won't because it acts like it can fall back on AGP's bandwidth (which obviously isn't there).

That depends on the amount of power used by the other components. If it doesn't work in your system, try getting a new case with a better power supply. You may also try fitting a regular power supply in your case -- it doesn't have to be specific to your computer, as long as it fits.

Bobvilla is technically correct, but the amount of money you want to spend to upgrade is the ultimate deciding factor. I recommend getting a new case with a 400W power supply and a new motherboard that can take your chip -- chances are you can't use the old motherboard because it's too integrated into the case. You can recycle your current components (chip, RAM, other stuff) or you may just want to build a brand new computer.

A new Tron 2.0 demo has been released, now with single-player levels and (according to Penny Arcade) far improved multiplayer. DOWNLOAD!

[edit] Apparently the above download site mismarked that file and it is not the new demo. I have changed the link as Gamespot is currently the only site I know of with a download available. Kinda sucks, as I was hoping to download it at a decent speed.

So, for those who haven't tried this yet: It does kick ass, multiplayer is better, and the disc rocks my shorts. There are gun-type weapons, but they aren't as fun as the disc and have no defense.
