Tampopo Arcade

There are two documentaries in the Tampopo Arcade DVD set. In TA1, I try to include as much general information as possible about the about the arcade/bemani community. To someone that is outside of this world, I can see that there are a few things that might not make sense. Basically, I was trying to define the arcade community as a whole and what it represented. I'm hoping that this documentary will interest you in conducting your own research about the arcade community/bemani gaming after viewing it. The audio commentary may explain some more information that you might be wondering about, but for the most part, it's us talking trash about the people in the community. My ultimate goal in TA1 is to make you laugh and to entertain you as much as possible.

TA2 is much different than TA1. They're completely different documentaries. There's less general information, and I've become much more aggressive on attacking everyone in the community. I was mad at the community, because it started out as an underground thing. All of a sudden all these losers started invading the arcade scene trying to shamelessly play bemani games. Being fed up with the whole issue, I decided to attack everyone in the community. I feel that Tampopo Arcade 2 was made for the community more than anything, but I think anyone who is not apart of this community can follow it till the end.

I recieved the DVD set on Saturday. Despite not knowing anything about the "scene" (I'm only a fan of the home ports) I was able to follow everything fine. I was even able to enjoy myself quite a bit. Would I have gotten more out of it had I been a member of the community? Probably, but I don't think you really have to be a part of it to enjoy it.

So, do I recommend it? Yes and no. If you think you would enjoy watching a group of gamers go around making fun of people and just getting into all sorts of strange situations, you'd get a kick out of this I'm sure. If you are after a 100% serious and professional look at the arcade scene, you'll probably be disappointed. That's not to say these documentaries are unprofessional, their quality actually surprised me. It's just that some of the "humor" and situations are a little immature and some of you may not enjoy it. I, for one, had a blast though.

Sorry to get off topic, this seems like an interesting doc but it's too steep for me. However, you mentioned some Street Fighter doc called Bang The Machine. Anyone know where I can get it? I did a search on the board and came up with nothing.

So I watched TA1 and TA2 in a row with Satsuki this weekend.

Oh man. The best part of the entire set is after the credits of TA2 where Godden is talking to Sabishii about frienship. Oh my god...He is a GENIUS. You don't know what hes talking about half of the time, but man is it funny.

We're probably going to watch them again this weekend, this time with the commentary tracks on. Everyone singing SOS, Chango taking the mic into the bathroom with him during the recording, making fun of nVision's raps, the commentaries are practically funnier than the movies.

What exactly do you mean by losers? Speaking as someone who's from the east coast, Bemani getting a little more mainstream recognition is the only way I could've gotten into the games. Everyone's a noob at one point and I hope the documeneries aren't newbies getting harrassed and rejected just because they are new to Bemani. I only worry because I've seen it happen from time to time in my own arcades and the last thing I want is innocent enough kids who are interested in Bemani getting harrassed and embarassed.

Personally, I play Beatmania and DDR (and the occasional Drum Mania and very very occasional ParaPara) for nothing but fun. I'm always practicing hard and trying to get better and I do enjoy watching tournaments (and I have participated in one or two) but unless these "losers" really are assholes or jerkoffs trying to invade the community then I welcome them with open arms to enjoy the games and have fun with the Jersey "community".

off topic, but where can I find the interview with Jenith after the 2001 AI tourney (march) where they were asking him about his sex life? that was funny as hell.

They really are. Unless you have been following the scene over there it's really hard to explain. It's not newbie bashing, it's better ;)

Fair enough. I don't doubt that there are such a thing 'cause we have a few here in Jersey. In SoCal where it's much more popular I'm sure there's even more of them. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't newbie bashing.
